2 . Favored by many internet influencers, the city of Zibo, once a sleepy industrial city, has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms. The topic Zibo “barbecue” on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, was played 4.96 billion times since the city stormed the Internet for over a month. On 29 April, Zibo Railway Station saw a record 87,000 train trips to and from the station, according to Chinese news website Caixin.
Local authorities in Zibo have been quick to respond to the sudden flow of visitors. A barbecue zone that can accommodate 10,000 people, featuring live band performances, was built overnight. Volunteers have been dispatched to the railway station to offer advice and recommendations to tourists. Designated (指定的) buses and trains bring tourists to and from the hottest barbecue spots. The government has even threatened to punish profiteering hotels who raise prices by more than 50% .
What makes Zibo barbecue so special is that it does offer a distinctive (独特的) dining experience. The skewers (烤串) are 70-80 percent cooked before they are brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking them on their own stoves, offering an immersive dining experience.
Zibo’s low prices are also appealing. Many college students in Shandong have made concrete plans to enjoy Zibo barbecue at the least cost, and traveling back and forth by train for only 200 yuan ($29.1). So what better way to attract adventurous, hungry college students with a tight budget other than “tasty barbecue that makes you full for only 50 yuan!”
The locals seem happy enough about the arrival of visitors and shy away from hot spots to make space for outsiders, saying they are proud that their hometown has gained nationwide fame.

4 . When you stand in the starlight under the Milky Way, the night sky is one of the most incredible wonders many of us have not seen, which is under threat due to the constant march of human progress and consequent light pollution. Below are some of my favorite dark sky destinations around the world.
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is one of the best places in the country to view the night sky. Comprised of Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park and the Mackenzie Basin of Aotearoa New Zealand’s South Island, the Dark Sky Reserve was certified in 2012 to continue protecting the dark skies in the area.
Stargazing (天体观察) enthusiasts should plan a visit to Mt John Observatory, tours of which must be booked in advance.
The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland
Most visitors go to Ireland’s western Wild Atlantic Way to explore beyond hot spots like Dublin and Cork, but the route is also fast becoming a great region for stargazing, thanks to the efforts of local communities along the Way.
If planning a trip, keep in mind that Ireland does have wet months where overcast skies are more likely to affect your stargazing prospects.
Wadi Rum, Jordan
Wadi Rum is also sometimes called “The Valley of the Moon”, though you’re more likely to compare it to Mars if you visit it. Famous for its otherworldly landscapes in movies like Prometheus, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Martian, Wadi Rum’s towering red rock formations are extremely interesting to explore by day, and offer protection from any distant light pollution once the sun sets.
Stargazing in Wadi Rum is a breathtaking experience and reminds us how our ancestors have experienced the night sky for thousands of years.

5 . Beach vacations
Virginia Beach
Home to 14 miles of sandy beaches and some of the best attractions in the entire state, Virginia Beach is dreamy—and a total dream for budget-minded travelers looking for cheap beach vacations. Apart from hitting the surf and sand, you’ll want to check out the Virginia Aquarium (水族馆) and the Ocean Breeze WaterPark, especially if you’re traveling with kids.
Erie
The best way we can describe Erie, Pennsylvania? It’s like the choose-your-own-adventure version of cheap beach vacation destinations. It’s a great destination for singles, couples or families—there’s really that much diversity here. The area is home to family-friendly attractions such as Waldameer Park & Water World and the Erie Zoo, but there are also wineries (葡萄酒厂) and museums in the region to appeal to adults.
Wildwood
Visitors to Wildwood enjoy all the same facilities you’ll find at expensive beach towns—without the high prices. Enjoy five miles of a very wide sandy beach and a two-mile boardwalk with shops and arcades (拱廊). Here, you can get cheap, delicious candy, slices of pizza, fries and a new airbrush T-shirt to remember your cheap beach vacation on the Jersey Shore.
Biloxi
Biloxi is not only one of the best beach destinations in Mississippi—it’s also one of the most affordable. The highlight here is Biloxi Beach, where the sand is soft and white, and the Gulf of Mexico’s barrier islands ensure the warm waters are quiet enough for swimming. Other draws in town include historical sites such as the Biloxi Lighthouse.

They also went to At Life Hub@ Anting Square.

8 . William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe by the back paths, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋)—these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family.
Most of their trips seem far from relaxing—cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and eschew pricey hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow as an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. “We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they are people just like us, everywhere. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.”
However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children’s schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures, and political structures, is the real test. “You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,” he says.
