文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了Ilya Kneppelhout创办线下俱乐部,来鼓励人们进行真正的互动。

1 . While most coffee shops offer free Wi-Fi connections to get more customers, Offline Club, a pop-up cafe in Amsterdam, offers a different connection where a Wi-Fi signal is unnecessary. Upon entering, its members leave their devices behind, grab a coffee, and enjoy a 90s’ atmosphere.

Ilya Kneppelhout, who started the Offline Club, said that the club is for people overwhelmed by their busy lives and constant notifications, according to Inside Edition. He added that their members want to cut down on their social media and screen time and focus on in-person connections — a simple idea, but participants enjoy it.

One of their members said, “being with the club makes you feel present in a way you didn’t expect”. “It felt a bit like travelling in time and made me feel nostalgic (怀旧) about the way bars and cafes used to be because nowadays, those are places we’re only going to with friends and people we already know and spend time doing digital things like work,” another member added.

The founders believe this concept could work in other cities, too. Kneppelhout stated that they want to spread the idea worldwide. “Right now, we’re getting together with a franchising concept, and we hope to have offline detox events in the entire world for people to reconnect,” he said.

Meanwhile, the internet and computers are deeply integrated into our lives. Being addicted to the internet can hurt you in different ways, both in body and emotions. Given this, the digital detox provided by the Offline Club could be helpful for individuals who feel they spend too much time online. It’s a chance to reduce stress and focus more on talking to people. It also helps stop us from becoming too reliant on technology. Ultimately, a digital detox is about stepping back to connect with what really matters.

1. Why did Ilya Kneppelhout start the Offline Club?
A.To ease life pressure.B.To refuse social media.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述人们越来越依靠网络上的信息判断自己的病情,导致过度焦虑。作者建议我们要遵循专业的建议,而不是自行诊断。

5 . Suddenly, you wake up in the middle of the night with stomachache. It starts off as a dull pain, but then quickly heightens and seems to move down your body. So, you immediately jump on your computer or phone to search for various conditions you could be suffering from. Could it be a stomach virus, or worse still, stomach cancer?

If this sounds familiar, you may be suffering from cyberchondria. It’s a hybrid term for cyberspace (网络空间) and hypochondria(now called “illness anxiety”), which refers to a state in which people are fearful of having a serious illness. A cyberchondriac is someone who searches the Internet excessively (过度地) for health information and rather than finding relief, diagnoses (诊断) himself or herself with a serious disease, and feels more anxious as a result.

Persons with low levels of illness anxiety can search for health information on the Internet and are more likely to discuss the information with their doctors and make a plan to address the problem. For cyberchondriacs, that’s not the case. Their excessive searches tend to fuel unnecessary fear and anxiety and they often accept what they find online as fact without ever consulting a doctor.

Excessive online searching not only makes a person with high levels of illness anxiety more anxious, there are also other risks. A person might choose to self-treat an illness he/she doesn’t have, taking medicines that may have side effects. What’s more, much of the health information online is not complete. Even one search engine warns its users that medical-related data on the web is intended for informational purposes only and you should always consult a health care professional if you have a medical concern.

The bottom line is that the Internet is an invaluable resource for information, finding providers, making connections and more, but it should never replace the sound advice from a medically trained doctor.

1. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?
A.A social phenomenon in the Internet age.
B.The great need for more professional doctors.

3. What does the underlined word “fuel” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Stimulate.B.Control.C.Remove.D.Change.

A.More detailed medical-related data.
B.An increased risk of misdiagnosis.

6 . The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential negative effects of social media on young kids and teens. But the same risks may be true for adults. A review study suggests addiction symptoms (症状), such as failure to pay attention to personal life and escapism, appear to be present in some people who use Facebook excessively (过度).

A study also shows when people stop using the Internet, they also go through small but measurable physical effects. Rather than improving health, as frequent interactions (互动) with offline social networks do, the findings show that interacting with Facebook may predict the opposite result for young adults—it may undermine it.

In fact, another study found that social media use is linked to greater feelings of social isolation (隔离), mentally and physically. We fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others as we check our Facebook pages. The study looked at how we make comparisons with others’ posts, in “upward” or “downward” directions—that is, feeling that we are either worse or better off than our friends. It turned out that both types of comparisons made people feel worse, which is surprising, since in real life, only upward comparisons make people feel bad. But in the social network world, it seems that any kind of comparison is linked to depressive symptoms.

All of this is not to say that there is no benefit of social media—obviously it keeps us connected across great distances, and helps us find people we had lost touch with years ago. But visiting social networks when you have some time to kill is very likely a bad idea. If you are feeling brave, try taking a little break, and see how it goes. And if you are going to keep “using” it, then at least try to use it reasonably.

1. What might researchers think about “using Facebook excessively”?
A.It’s problem behavior.
B.It’s costly and time-consuming.
C.It’s sometimes a solution to social isolation.
D.It’s leading people to become imaginative.
2. What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Present.B.Destroy.
C.Check.D.Ensure.
3. What’s the finding of the study mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.Social media are being given too much importance.
B.Young Facebook users feel more isolated than their elders.
C.All kinds of comparisons on social media upset people.
D.Downward comparisons link closer to depression than upward ones.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Social media affect people’s mental health.
B.Comparing ourselves with others may lead to depression.
C.Social networks have more advantages than disadvantages.
D.Nowadays people tend to turn to the Internet for satisfaction.

7 . Online games are very popular among people. They make a large amount of money and have a large user base, including lots of teenagers. But now, new rules on online games have been introduced, which are aimed at fighting against addiction (成瘾) among underage players.

Adult players need to spend most of their time paying attention to work and family, and cannot play games as often as they want. However, underage players have more spare time, but less responsibility and self-control. Children without a clear purpose in life, where there is less family education and school management, might easily become addicted to all kinds of online games and online novels.

The most direct impact of an addiction to online games among underage players is on their psychological (心理) health. According to psychologists, people seriously addicted to games can become anxious, bad tempered, and avoid responsibility.

However, Chinese parents are more worried that their children will lack interest in studying if they become addicted to online games, as academic success is important for students. Additionally, when their children become addicted to such games, most parents do not know how to deal with the situation.

To carry out the new rules to the best effect, more specific issues need to be solved, such as managing foreign online games, ensuring that facial recognition technologies used by games companies have the wanted effect or making sure online game providers can only offer one-hour services to underage players on Saturdays and Sundays. While there are always loopholes (漏洞) in new rules, authorities should act quickly to close them.

There is no doubt that online games have harmful effects on young people. It is not acceptable for a large number of teenagers or those even younger, to become addicted to these games.

1. What’s the purpose of the new rules on online games?
A.To raise awareness of Internet safety.
B.To bring in new computer programs.
C.To reduce the grown-up user base.
D.To prevent the teenagers’ addiction.
2. Why are underage players addicted to online games more easily?
A.They can learn more knowledge on the Internet.
B.They have more free time and less self-control.
C.They have purposes in life but lack higher education.
D.They maintain a sense of curiosity about the Internet.
3. What problem has to be solved to ensure the effect of the new rules?
A.How to reduce parents’ anxiety about kids’ study.
B.How to find loopholes in the popular online games.
C.How to control the service time of online game providers.
D.How to invent a facial recognition game for young players.
4. What is the author’s attitude to the new rules ?
A.Confused.B.Negative.
C.Supportive.D.Uninterested.

8 . Researchers have been trying to uncover the cause of a steady decline of drug and alcohol use in teens. Some suspect it’s due to anti-drug campaigns or the decline of cigarettes as a gateway drug. But another theory has begun to surface. Is a new drug replacing the old ones? Are smart phones taking their place?

I noticed that using my smart phone took away so many life experiences. I hadn’t minded before when my own phone could distract me, but now I felt annoyed when my friends or family used their phones when we were together. Sure it was uncomfortable at first, not having a clutch (紧握) to fall back on when I didn’t feel like talking. But we shouldn’t use our devices as the universal conversation avoider, or as our distraction from the discomfort of human interaction. How can we learn to interact when our phones are on hand at all times to prevent ourselves from doing so?

Still, smart phones can sometimes be wonderful tools. They allow us to take beautiful photos and help us connect with old friends and maintain long-distance relationships. They allow us to have an endless amount of information at our fingertips, and give us directions to whatever destinations. But we must consider how every tool smart phones provide us with can also influence our lives. Not only does smart phone and screen use have an effect on relationships, it can also shape an individual and the brain. Studies have shown that excessive Internet usage can cause increased depression, loneliness, and anxiety in adolescents.

So my advice to teens who feel the same way as I do? My decision to go without a phone was definitely extreme, considering our generation. So try ditching your phone for a week. Observe how it affects your relationships, your mood, and your presence. You just might end up feeling less stressed, happier, and more connected.

1. How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By presenting study findings.
B.By creating a new theory.
C.By asking questions.
D.By doing research.
2. What is mainly discussed about smart phones in Paragraph 2?
A.They are perfectly designed.
B.Their features are striking.
C.Their operations are too complex.
D.They have an impact on social life.
3. What may affect teenagers’ mental health according to Paragraph 3?
A.Bad family relationship.
B.Too much Internet time.
C.Easy access to smart phones.
D.Harmful online information.
4. What does the underlined word “ditching” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Giving up.B.Giving away.C.Turning down.D.Turning back.
