1 . We live in a town with three beaches. There are two parks less than 10 minutes’ walk from home where neighborhood children gather to play. However, what my children want to do after school is to pick up a screen and stare at it for hours. They are not alone. Today’s children spend an average of four and a half hours a day looking at screens, addicted to watching television and using the Internet.
In the past few years, an increasing number of people and organizations have begun coming up with plans to resist this trend (趋势). A couple of years ago film-maker David Bond realized that his children, then aged five and three, were addicted to screens to the point where he was able to say “chocolate” into his 3-year-old son’s ear without getting a response. He realized that something needed to change. He documented his journey as he set about treating nature as a brand to be marketed to young people. The result was Project Wild Thing, a film which records the birth of the World Network, a group of organizations with the common goal of getting children out into nature.
“Just five more minutes outdoors can make a difference,” David Bond says. “There is a lot of really interesting evidence which seems to be suggesting that if children are inspired up to the age of seven, then being outdoors will be on habit for life.” His own children have got into the habit of playing outside now: “We just send them out into the garden and tell them not to come back in for a while.”
Summer is upon us. There is an amazing world out there, and it needs our children as much as they need it. Let us get them out and let them play.

3 . It’s time to own up. When you’re sitting at your computer, do you work continuously all day? Or do you allow yourself to become distracted now and again to open a few extra websites, check social media, read a spot of news, browse the latest fashion trends, maybe catch up on some celebrity gossip, and look at some...
Stop! You’re “cyberloafing”. The unwieldy word is a combination of “cyber”, which means “related to computers”, and “loafing”, which means “relaxing in a lazy way”. We do it, and we do it a lot. A study from the University of Texas suggests we are guilty of this form of procrastination (拖延) for 14% of our working day. On a Friday afternoon, it’s expected to be more than that.
But it’s a slippery slope. It can damage your productivity and even your career. Because according to the University of Texas research, each time a worker gets sidetracked by the internet, it takes an average of 23 minutes to get back to work.
More than that, cyberloafing has a dark side, according to a report published in The Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace. It argues that cyberloafing is connected to several negative personality traits. People who cyberloaf are more likely to be selfish and narcissististic (自恋的). Furthermore, people with these traits are less likely to feel ashamed about avoiding work, and less concerned about getting caught.
Why do we do it? For some, it’s undoubtedly an escape from the hard boring work that they’re supposed to be doing. Some might get a feeling of satisfaction, get excitement from finding a great deal online. But overall, it’s something that takes you away from what you’re actually being paid to do, or paying to do: if you’re a student. When you have the whole world of the internet at your fingertips, it’s hard to resist.
How do we avoid cyberloafing? If you can truly ask yourself why you are cyberloafing, then that can help identify the base problem. And if that sounds like too much hard work, you could just switch off the internet for a couple of hours!

7 . Well, to pick up where we left off last time. I’m certain that you know all too well the dangers hiding on the World Wide Web. And whether it’s for schoolwork, entertainment, or just socializing with friends, the Internet will surely be a major part of your child’s life. So, it’s important to secure their online stays.
It’s not the easiest thing, but keeping open lines of communication is primary. Let them know they can share their online activities with you. Talk to them about their online presence as early as possible, ideally before they begin to use email, social media, or a smartphone. Discuss what they find interesting online and learning from them about popular websites and apps; this will create understanding and allow you to identify potential risks.
Next, monitor without spying. Most kids learn to understand boundaries, like respecting others’ personal space, or not opening the cookie jar without asking. Internet use is no different. It’s helpful for kids to have ground rules as to which websites they can visit, which apps they can use, and what they can share online. Remind them that if they feel uneasy with anything that occurs online, they need to alert an adult immediately.

10 . Social media has completely taken over everyday life, affecting how society runs and changing individuals in ways that even they can feel. While social media can act as a platform for people to express themselves, it can also be overwhelming, especially for high school teens.
To teenager Bryson Lan, quitting social media helped eliminate (消除) a significant distraction in his routine and keep up with teachers. “I was scrolling through social networking sites so much,” Lan said. “I was also starting to struggle since I entered my high school year. When school started, I was super overwhelmed (不知所措的), and I was just not ready for it.”
Most teenagers fear that by eliminating these apps, they will miss out on connections with their peers and feel a significant loss to their social life. However, Lan found he didn’t miss anything during his time without social media.
Another problem with social media is the amount of “junk content” posted. People are regularly posting and updating on social media, and much of the content has no meaning to other viewers and is ultimately a time suck.
However, social media isn’t all negative. Social media can be a place to develop passions and boost creativity. For example, Lan found his interest in photography blossom after seeing works from other photographers on social media. “Social media is a good place where you can have a portfolio (作品集) or upload your works,” Lan said. “A lot of people have photography accounts or art accounts. In some ways, I think it actually furthers your hobby.” “Thanks to this revolutionary development of social media, we can enjoy a world where everyone is closer than before,” Lan said. “But we also need to have the skills to make good use of social media, and that depends on each person’s efforts.”
