2 . I just had one of the most interesting experiences of my life, and wanted to share it with my dearest friends.
One cold evening, I drove home and was stuck in a traffic jam, when my car started to die. I managed to coast into a gas station in order not to get in others’ way. Before I made the call to ask for help, I found a crying woman. I walked towards her and asked if she needed help. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now.
I helped her fill up her car completely, walked to the next McDonald’s and bought 2 big bags of food, some gifts and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car. They ate them quickly. And we stood eating fries and talking a little.
She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City. Her husband left 2 months ago and she had not been able to support her family. So she went to California to find her parents. She packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California for Christmas, but not that they were going to live there.
I gave her my gloves, a hug and said a quick prayer(祈祷) with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, “So, are you like an angel or something?”
It was so incredible(不可思议的) to be a part of someone else’s miracle(奇迹). And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem.

5 . After college I wanted to make a difference in the world, so I joined a non-profit organization and became a volunteer teacher. I hoped to make a positive impact in Namibia. Honestly, my first choice wasn’ t Africa, but I am extremely grateful that I was sent there.
Various tribes (部落) and racial groups live in Namibia, and a number of languages are spoken. When Namibia gained independence in 1990, English became the official language. Teachers were supposed to teach in English, but many lacked the language skills to do so. My job was to train the teachers. Schools were quite bare. Some classrooms consisted merely of sticks stuck in the sand and a metal roof. Because both boys and girls shaved their heads, I learned to distinguish them by their uniforms: girls wore skirts.
The students had tiring days. They walked miles to get to school, often barefoot. They also did many daily chores. They fetched water, gathered firewood and cooked meals. Even with their mountains of work, few possessions and little opportunity, these children were joyful. I admired that.
This was the first time that I had lived abroad in a different culture and with a host family. Simply getting accustomed to the living conditions was a big adjustment. I had no electricity, running water, phone or Internet. However, I could end each day with a splendid African sunset. And at night, I had an unbelievable, light-pollution-free view of the entire Milky Way. I never thought I would live in such an environment. My experience awakened me to not only the limitations we place on ourselves, but also our amazing ability to adapt.
Travel, step outside of your comfort zone and immerse (使沉浸在) yourself in another culture. You won’t regret it.

8 . My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness that we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and with the pandemic, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.
The next day, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked
around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street comer with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.
After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. Seeing how moved she was by his music, at the end of our meal, I gave her a ten-dollar bill and asked her to walk across the street and put it in his bowl.
She was a little surprised. “Really?” she asked with bright eyes. I nodded. So she headed over and as she approached, the man was just finishing a song and started talking to her, and they ended up having a sweet conversation. She told him how touched she was by his music, and he ended up telling her that she made his day. As she was excitedly repeating the conversation back to me, she mentioned, “He didn’t even know how much it was. He was just thankful that someone was enjoying his music.”

9 . A teacher in New York decided to carry out a project with her class to see how it would influence their community if they honored people for making a difference or recognized them for doing a good thing.
She gave each of her students three blue ribbons (丝带) with gold letters which read,“Who I Am Makes a Difference.” Then she instructed each student to go out and give a ribbon to a person as a way to thank them for doing something good. Afterwards, they were to follow up on the results, see who honored whom, and report back to the class in about a week.
One of the boys in the class went to a manager in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. Then, he gave him two extra ribbons and asked him to do the same with someone that he wanted to honor or thank.
Later that day, the manager went to see his boss, who had been seen as a bad-tempered man. He told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The manager asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon. The boss said, “Well, sure.” Then he gave him the last extra ribbon and said he hoped he could pass it on to somebody else.
That night, the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. One of the managers gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon, and I thought about you. Sometimes, I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school, but you are the most important person in my life. And I love you!”
Hearing this, the boy couldn’t stop crying. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, “Dad, I was going to run away from home after you were asleep. But now I don’t need to.”
The boss went back to work and changed a lot. He was no longer getting angry, but made sure to let all his employees know that they made a difference.

It was a Saturday. Usually, Aman would be out playing with his friends. But today, he was busy in the kitchen. Since his mother was unwell, Aman had taken her place, preparing simple meals for his family. His little sister, Neelam, was the happiest.
“Aman, the dish you prepared for my lunch yesterday was so tasty that all my friends ate it up within minutes. I had to make do with eating their lunches,” said Neelam.
“Ha ha! Next time, remind me to prepare some extra for your friends as well,” said Aman. “I am happy that you have taken over the kitchen duties now. Imagine having to eat Dad’s boring food for a whole week, like the bread he used to make for us last year when Mom had gone out of town! said Neelam.
Dad, who had just walked into the kitchen, overheard Neelam’s words and asked in mock (假装的) anger, “Who is complaining (抱怨) about my cooking skills?”
“Not complaining, Dad, just kidding,” said Neelam.
The three laughed. Aman then prepared tea for his parents and served it to them.
“Thank you, Aman, for helping Dad with the housework while I have been unwell,” said Mom. “I hope it has not been too much trouble for you. Hope you are not missing out on your schoolwork because of this.”
“Don’t worry, Mom. You just relax. I have more than enough time to study in the evenings,” said Aman.
In a couple of days, Aman’s mother felt better and took over the kitchen duties.
Aman continued to help around the kitchen by cutting the vegetables and preparing the soup. Mom taught him a few new recipes (菜谱). Even Neelam helped with whatever little she could like washing the vegetables and peeling (削皮) potatoes.
“Aman, now that I am well, you should start focusing on your studies again,” said Mom.
“I love cooking, Mom. It is fun and also helps me relax before I sit down to study,” replied Aman.
