During my six years at the Boyd E. Smith Primary School, I was lucky to have so many great teachers who served as thoughtful role models. They were admirable characters who had far-reaching effects on me in more ways than I could have known. Among them who influenced me the most was my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Green.
The truth is that Mrs. Green was unlike anyone I had ever known. She had so much energy and passion for the world and for her students that she spent thirty years of her life at Boyd E. Smith. Mrs. Green taught maths. She devoted herself to her work. I would never have imagined that I would have left her class with so much.
Mrs. Green is everything that I want to be. The first time I met her, I knew she was someone special. Being young fourth-graders, we were taught to show respect to teachers as we learned to say “Thank you, madam” and “Yes, madam” on a daily basis. We did not complain about it. We knew she did it to make us better young adults that would carry on through life with respect for our elders.
Mrs. Green was an amazing teacher for many reasons, as she was intelligent and passionate about what she taught. She did not scold (责骂) us, but she taught us to recognize the difference between right and wrong and to be responsible no matter what we did. Looking back upon those days when I was in her class, I realized that she was teaching us qualities that were important to our characters. The most valuable lesson I learned from her was to live with honesty. I had no idea what this word meant until the incident (事情) in a math exam.

I found the kitten sitting on the front step of our house. He was black and white and looked quite weak. Where did he come from? I noticed he had no collar around his neck. Who would be so irresponsible?
I went inside and opened a can of fish. After I placed the can in the doorway, the kitten hungrily lapped it up and then walked right inside the house. Later, after jumping onto a bunch of pillows on the couch, he began to groom his hair.
I bet his last owners didn’t love him at all! I thought. If someone can’t take care of their kitten, they deserve to lose him! Our family never owned pets, but I had always wanted one. It’s a good thing I found that kitten and took him in. Thank goodness he found me!
The kitten kept meowing quite a lot. And then, it started trying to bite my hand.
“Hey, kitten! I’m not food!” I said. But the kitten tried again to bite my finger. I knew I had to get him some proper cat food. “You stay put, kitten!” I told him. “I’m going to get you food!” Then I grabbed my keys and headed out to the pet store nearest to our house.
On my way to the store, I spotted a sign on the telephone pole:
LOST KITTEN-Black and White, very friendly. If you find him, please call us.
“If you were so worried about your kitten,” I thought, “maybe you should have taken better care of him!”
When I walked into the pet store, I found that the place was packed with kids handing out flyers about the same cat to customers inside. In the back of the store, I saw a boy under 10 years old, crying in his wheelchair. “I can’t believe I lost my kitten!” he said to his parents.

6 . In high school, I was on the basketball team. We actually won the state championship. But, I didn’t really play much. But I loved being a part of the team. I was a super fan and I had front row tickets to every game.
Every day after practice, I was the only one who showered in the locker rooms. The reason why I liked showering in the locker rooms was that it saved time. I just needed to throw my dirty clothes back into my gym locker and then change back into my clean clothes I wore from school and then I could go straight home or go out with my friends.
The water was freezing cold. And that’s why I was the only one who showered in these locker rooms. And at the time, I didn’t know why I was doing it. The cold water was hard to bear. I would jump up and down and make strange noises. And all my teammates could see me. I was just a young 17-year old who didn’t mind being watched. I remember people asking me why I did it and I’d tell them that these cold showers helped build my character.
What I have learned is how to deal with discomfort, hardship and so on. It taught me to get used to discomforts, because when your life becomes too comfortable, you reach a point of no return. It also helped me fight through any pain or hardship. And above all, cold showers have helped me learn to face discomfort bravely, so I can get through anything and get it done.
The habits you build now are going to determine your future. How successful do you want to be? How much can you handle? What are you doing every day that is going to help you achieve your goals no matter what discomfort or troubles it brings?

Brian Williams left the house with a lunchbox full of food every day. His mom enjoyed preparing home-made meals for him, believing home-cooked food was much healthier than the food in the school cafeteria.
Every time Brian went home from school, his lunchbox would be empty. Mrs. Williams was pleased, thinking Brian enjoyed the meals prepared for him. However, she wondered why he would head straight to the kitchen to pounce (猛扑) on more food every afternoon.
“You’re such a growing boy, huh? Go ahead and cat,” Mrs. Williams once said, patting his head as he ate the snack she had prepared. Brian nodded silently as he continued to devour (吞食) his food.
Little did Mrs. Williams know that Brian had been going to school without food. His classmates would play jokes on him, thinking he didn’t have enough money for paid meals at the cafeteria. Brian paid no attention to them. Instead, he hid in the playground while everyone ate their meals in the classroom or cafeteria. He would sit on the swings alone, waiting for the bell to ring for their next class.
Soon, his teachers got concerned about all the teasing Brian received from his classmates and they wondered why he had never eaten anything during the lunch break. They knew he came from a well-off family and that he would have been given money to buy food at the cafeteria if he had not brought home-made lunch.
Whenever they asked him where his food was, he’d make excuses—he left his lunch at home, he wasn’t hungry, or he ate before lunchtime. But his teachers weren’t convinced, so they decided to give Brian’s mom a call. “Brian hasn’t been eating. Mrs. Williams,” a teacher revealed. “He gives us excuses every day about why he doesn’t have lunch with him.”
“But that’s impossible!” Mrs. Williams shouted. “He leaves with his lunchbox every day and I make sure that his lunchbox is filled. Where does the food go?” she said, surprised.

9 . From the heartland to urban parks, there was a time when baseball was the only game in the summer holidays. But with competition from other sports like soccer, baseball is not as prevalent as it used to be. However, the baseball field is still a place for young boys to prove themselves.
Tim was one of those boys. His build was slight and unfinished. Some bays had the makings of athletic ability through every growth phase. Tim seemed to be growing in odd ways: long arms and legs, thin shoulders, and no meat on his bones. But he loved baseball. Although strikeouts (三振出局) piled up in the recording sheets, Tim continued. He knew his body didn’t respond to dreams and wishes, but his desire was always there.
Tim practiced his swing every day, and every strikeout brought two things to the little boy: determination and some tears that Tim quickly wiped away before returning to the baseball field. His teammates encouraged him. His coach worked with him. Even the opposing teams held their breath, wishing for his hitting, just one hit for the boy who seemed to deserve it more than any other 10-year-old kid in the world.
What teammates and parents and even the coach never saw was a gray van (小型货车) that pulled up each game in the parking lot. Inside was Tim’s father, too weak from advancing cancer to get out of the van. It was a tough assignment for a father to watch his kid strike out, but for Tim’s father, he believed success was made out of sweat, tears, and effort instead of results. That was also what he expected Tim to understand and do accordingly (因此).
At the end of the season, Tim stood on the field and was as determined as ever. He did his best, but ended up missing the chance to advance. When the game was over, Tim ran straight into the gray van and into the arms of his father, who witnessed his son’s every effort and was proud of him. Sometimes success really means more than the result.
