When Mills Godwin High School’s 11th grader Laasya Konidala isn’t studying, you’ll usually find her baking in the kitchen or doing a puzzle with her mother. For her, family is everything. But recently, her family received terrible news.

This past year her grandmother was diagnosed (诊断) with breast cancer. But she didn’t sit back and worry, she     1     (祈祷) for her grandmother and went to work.

“As someone who has a lot of natural curiosity and as a researcher, one of the first things I did was to d    2     into reading articles and papers as much as I can,” Konidala said.

Teaching herself to code (编码), she entered the MEDARVA Science Fair, presenting research that bridges the gap between predicting breast cancer sub-types with good classification models. And she won! It’s research that could help to     3     (发现) and treat breast cancer. As you can imagine, her grandmother is very proud.

“She knew I was into     4     (science) research, but she never expected me to do something directly related to her. She was at a loss for words,” she said.

Her mother, Rekha Rasineni is not. She tells you what a hard worker Laasya can be.

“Some days we tell her ‘You don’t need to be     5     (produce) and working all day. Take it easy.’ But she doesn’t like that. She likes to study and do puzzles and bake and maybe even save lives with her research.”

I used to be a lazy student who often fell asleep in class. Worse still, I associated with bad friends. As a result, I was     1    (落后的) in my studies. It was not until the beginning of the new term that I     2    (开始) to behave well because my English teacher, Miss Yang, a beautiful and attractive lady, kept encouraging me not to give up studying. Under her influence, I was aware of my mistakes and decided to change my     3    (态度) entirely. Every day I     4    (上学) school on time and pay attention to my teachers in class. To     5    (避免) making the same mistakes, I usually attach a note to my desk as a reminder. Knowing that my studies are     6    (糟糕的), I want to improve it badly by making an effort. First, I     7    (醒来) early in the morning to do some reading aloud and attempt to learn the basic knowledge by heart. Also, my teachers are ready to assist me with my studies. With their help, it is not long before I make progress and catch up with my classmates. Not long ago, I participated in an Spoken English Contest on     8    (代表) of my class and I held the firm belief that I would     9    (打败) the other competitors. What astonished everybody was that I attained the championship and was     10    (授予) a gold medal. Now, not only do I go all out to study but I often exercise because only in this way can I keep the balance between study and relaxation.

Alice felt     1    (松了一口气) to see a car approaching. When the driver with a smile offered a ride to her,     2    (她松了一口气). Alice thankfully got in the car,     3    (一种温暖和解脱交织的感觉涌上心头。). Reaching her destination, Alice     4    (松了一口气). Tears of appreciation welled up in her eyes as she thanked the driver for his help, but he just smiled warmly.     5    (她在寒冷的天气里感到了温暖，相信处处都有好心人。).

Having quarreled with her husband Tom, Jane boiled with anger and she intended to find a better camp spot alone.An hour later, what alarmed her was that she got lost in the forest. Jane sank to her knees,     1     (悔恨的泪水模糊了她的双眼).     2    (她抓着头发，发出一声后悔的喊叫). All the fantastic memory crowded in and she couldn’t help crying, “    3    (如果我不是和汤姆吵了一架，然后走开，爬到高地上去，我就不会被困在这个可怕的地方了！)”    4    (她焦躁不安，懊恼万分), and after a while became asleep with tears in her eyes.Tom and the police were searching the forest for Jane by helicopter. Finally, they found Jane. Tom stormed out of the helicopter, rushed forward excitedly and hugged Jane tightly, saying that how much he was concerned about her.

Learning the children’s idea, Mrs. Meredith was so     1     (高兴的)that she smiled brightly. Then, the children got down to preparing popcorn     2     (高兴地). With a basket of popcorn, they left for the Bernard’s       3     (高兴地) to share with Bernard the good plan. Hearing what they said, Bernard     4     (高兴地雀跃), with tears filling his eyes. At the sight of the basket of popcorn, his parents were also     5     (非常高兴). Later,       6     (另他非常高兴的是), the popcorn was so tasty that it soon sold out. He soon returned, his whole face     7    (高兴得满脸通红).     8    (笑声在房间里萦绕)

The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.     1    (恐惧喷薄而出，将我紧紧包围，我已经寸步难行了).     2    (惊恐不已，我觉得两腿发抖，手心冒汗). Beside me was my wife, who was rooted to the ground,     3    (吓呆了). At the sight of the polar bear’ bloody mouth,     4    (吓得要死).The furry creature launched an attack on the fence, instantly leaving a narrow opening on it.     5    (我们感觉浑身血液凝固了)because of the terrible sight. Our throats tightened and our knees felt weak. Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. At the sight of the mess and the kids’ gloomy faces, he immediately realized what they were up to. “Need any help?”     1     (爸爸微笑地看着双胞胎，温柔地问), who felt discouraged at being found screwing things up. Jeff     2    (结巴地说出) their failed plan,     3    (他羞红了脸). “That’s a great idea. May I join you?” At this the twins cheered up and rolled up their sleeves to clean the stove before they learned to fry the bread following their father’s instructions. Soon came the delicious smell of French toast and chicken porridge, at which the twins felt a great sense of achievement. With everything settled, father left the kitchen,     4    (承诺道) to keep their secret.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Sitting up in confusion, mother was greeted with the kids’ smiling eyes and happy giggles. Before she could realize what was going on, the twins presented the breakfast tray,     5    (大声喊道), “Happy Mother’s Day!”     6    (惊讶地盯着精心准备的食物，妈妈饱含深情地说), “Thank you, darling. That’s the biggest surprise I’ve ever had!” It was then that father entered,     7    (回应) mother “That must be the best breakfast ever!” Mother bit into a piece of toast, nodding her head approvingly with great satisfaction. Exchanging glances, father and the twins beamed brightly with pleasure.

During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a quiz with a question: “What is the first name of the woman, who cleans the school?” Surely this was some kind of joke. I     1     (see) the cleaning woman before, but how could I know her name? I handed in my paper,     2     (leave) the last question blank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “Absolutely.” said the professor. “You're likely     3     (meet) many people. They all deserve your attention and care.”

I've never forgotten that lesson.
