I came out just like I went in, feet first and belly down. My legs were spread out like a bean-shooter stalk. Arms flailing the air, I     1     (快速钻出来)and up. I seemed to hang suspended in air at the peak of my climb. I could see the hard-packed ground far below. As I started down, I shut my eyes tight and     2     (咬紧牙关). This didn’t seem to help. One pup started my way. I held my breath. On he came until I felt a     5     (刺痒的小脚) on mine. The other pup followed. A warm puppy tongue    6    (抚摩)my sore foot. I     7    （跪下)and gathered them in my arms. I buried my face between their    8    (扭动着的身体)and cried. Rising with the two pups held close to my chest, I asked if I owed anything.

Between sobs, I heard the     9     (愉快的尖叫声)from my sisters as they fondled my pups.

I heard the     10     (绳子扯断的吧嗒声) and the rattle of paper. The oh’s and ah’s from my sisters were     11     (太好听了).

Mama     12     (飞奔出来) with my sisters right behind her. Papa was out by the bam harnessing his team. Mama yelled something to him about a snake. He dropped the harness,     13     (一跃跨过) the rail fence, and in a long lope started for me. Mama reached me first. She grabbed me and shouted, “where did it bite you?”

Mama just     14    (呻吟) way down deep and covered her face with her hands. Some big     15     (泪水涌出来) between her fingers. Almost in a whisper, I heard her say, “Thank God; I thought you were snake-bitten.”

One night a hotel caught a fire, and people in it ran out in their night clothes.

Two men stood o    2     and looked at the fire.

“Before I came out,” said one,“I ran into some of the rooms and found a lot of money. People don’t think of money when they’re     3    (害怕的). When anyone leaves paper money in a fire, the fire burns it. So I took all the bills that I could find. No one will be poor because I took them.”

“You don’t know my work,” said the other.

“What is your work?”

“I’m a policeman.”

“Oh!” cried the first man. He     4    (思考) quickly and said,“And do you know my work?“ “No,” said the policeman.

“I’m a writer. I’m always telling s    5     about things that never happened.”

There is a colorless tiger. He seems like something out of an old black and w    1     movie. His lack (缺乏) of color makes him so famous that the world’s great painters want to come to his zoo to t    2     to put some color on him. But the colors always just drips (滴) down off his skin (皮肤).

Then along comes a p    3     called Van Cough. When he travels around, he likes to paint     4     (happy) with his brush. He never puts any paint on his brush, and he doesn’t u    5     canvas (画布) or paper. He paints the air.

When going into the tiger’s cage, he begins saying some words to the big animal, and     6    (move) his dry brush up and d    7     the tiger’s body. Later, people can see c    8     on the tiger’s skin. Everyone wants to k    9     what the painter’s secret is. He says to them that his brush is only good for painting real life and he needs no colors. He can do it because of the words he kept s    10     to the tiger: “In just a few days you will be free again, you will see.”

It was the final sprint (冲刺) of the Santa BarbaraXV Grand Prix cyclo-cross race in Spain. Fans lined the road to the finishing line, cheering on the     1    (运动员).

Ismael Esteban, in third place, was just ahead of another cyclist, Agustin Navarro, with only 300 metres to the finishing line. Esteban had been cycling as hard as he could for hours and with the finishing line in     2    (视野). And all the cyclists began to speed up with all their s    3     to cross it. Just a few seconds later,fourth-placed Navarro caught up with him. Surely, he could simply overtake Esteban and come third. But Navarro slowed down and let Esteban run ahead of him. The two cyclists reached the finishing line with Esteban ahead by foot, Navarro just behind him. Navarro had let Esteban finish in third place, while he came fourth. The audience really     7    (钦佩) Navarro for his show of sportsmanship and cheered the cyclists. Navarro said,“I didn’t want to win that way.” Later, Esteban,who won the bronze m    8    tried to give it to Navarro.
