文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文探讨塑料袋需要多长时间才能降解。

1 . Even minor changes in behavior can have a positive environmental impact. Therefore, it is suggested to remove or reduce single-use plastic bags from your shopping trips, because the bags break down slowly, causing them to linger in landfills. But how long does a plastic bag really stick around?

The Center for Biological Diversity estimates that it takes a bag roughly 1000 years to break down. The term “break down” is a little misleading, though. Plastic ends up photodegrading (光降解) from ultraviolet (紫外线) radiation because the majority of microorganisms cannot eat it. And even after the bags degrade, the micro-plastics they leave behind may still harm the environment.

While 1000 years seems long, it is only an estimate. Since the invention of plastic bags in the 1950s or so, humankind has never actually seen the substance break down in real time. Instead, scientists have adopted respirometry tests (呼吸运动测量法), which helps estimate the breakdown rate of an organic substance by measuring the CO2 that the microorganisms produce when breaking down the material. When an organic substance, such as food waste, is present, CO2 levels rise, which allows scientists to estimate the rate of breakdown. However, because plastic bags don’t produce any CO2,—microorganisms aren’t eating them, the bags are just sitting there. If buried in a landfill and sheltered from ultraviolet light, plastic bags will last a very long time.

Bags have an impact on the environment beyond just their removal. It takes fossil fuels to make bags; one estimate puts this amount at 12 million barrels (桶) of oil annually. And after a bag has served its purpose in a consumer’s hands, it may then enter the food chain for wildlife. Plastic that builds up along the food chain is consumed by creatures like birds and fish.

While reducing the use of plastic bags is a good idea, choosing a cloth bag might not be the habit that will help the environment the most. The carbon footprint left by the cloth bags must be countered by thousands of uses.

1. What does the underlined word “linger” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

C.Respirometry tests effectively estimate its rate.
D.The level of CO2 released during it usually rises.
3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The multiple environmental costs of plastic bags.
B.The consumption of fuels for plastic bag production.
C.The harm of plastic bags to the food chain for wildlife.
D.The challenge of removing plastic bags from the ecosystem.
4. Which of the following is proposed according to the last paragraph?

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要报道了救援人员如何救助被困在窗户井里的五只花栗鼠宝宝,以及花栗鼠妈妈如何与宝宝们团聚的过程。

2 . Recently, a homeowner in Illinois came face to face with five furry chipmunk (花栗鼠) babies that crowded together in a window well. Shocked and concerned, the homeowner contacted Wildlife Allies (WA), a team committed to the caring removal and rescue of sick and injured wildlife.

Wildlife technician Cat Downs soon arrived at the scene along with an assistant. Together, Downs and the assistant netted the chipmunks, removing them from the window well, and placed them inside a new plastic carrier. The rescuers then moved the five chipmunk babies to a grassy area nearby and put them under a wooden basket where the mother could see them. To make sure the reunion was a success, the rescuers set up cameras and hoped the chipmunk mom would soon return.

“The chipmunk babies were enveloped in fear and tiredness,” a representative from Wildlife Allies recalled. Rescuers didn’t wait long and soon found an empty wooden basket. Then, checking the camera recording, they joyfully realized that the whole family had been reunited. “When we loaded the photos on to our computer and saw the mom, a burden was lifted from our hearts and pure joy came over us,” one Wildlife Allies representative said.

The Wildlife Allies team watched in satisfaction as the chipmunk mom tended to each of her babies. “The chipmunk mom emerged and heroically freed her precious babies from the wooden basket,” Anderson Humane wrote in a post about the rescue. “With determination, she made multiple trips, releasing all five babies and carrying the last one away to safety!”

According to Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, chipmunk babies rely heavily on their mother throughout the first few months of their lives, as she teaches them what to eat and how to survive. Usually, families like these stick together until the fall, when the babies are old enough to stand on their own feet.

Together at last, this little family is filled with happiness, thanks to those rescuers.

1. Where did the chipmunk mom find her babies?
A.Beside a grassy area.B.Inside a window well.
C.In a new plastic carrier.D.Under a wooden basket.
2. How did WA team feel when checking the photos?
A.Relieved.B.Regretful.C.Discouraged.D.Motivated.
3. What can we learn about chipmunk babies from the paragraph 5?
A.They stick together for food.B.They can standup afterbirth.
C.They are dependent on moms.D.They get survival skills in the fall.
4. Which might be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wildlife Allies: Our Last HopeB.Guide for Wildlife Rescuers
C.Chipmunk Mom’s Rescue TripD.Reunite a Chipmunk Family

5 . In Takoma Park, Maryland, in suburban Washington, people, adults or students, lined up at a pay phone outside a restaurant several times a week.

“Once I put the phone out there, it just took off,” said David Schulman, a Takoma Park violinist who created the Bird Calls Phone. Listeners push 1 to hear a yellow-crowned night heron (夜鹭), 7 to hear a pileated (红冠) woodpecker’s call and 9 for the distinct scream of a red-tailed hawk. Instructions about how to use the phone are in three languages: English, Spanish and Amharic — a reflection of Takoma Park’s Ethiopian community. In all, 10 birds native to the Takoma Park area are featured.

In addition to being fun, listening to Bird songs can reduce stress and anxiety, studies show. Even hearing recordings of birds can relieve negative emotions.

After noticing an abandoned, nonworking pay phone in town, Schulman wondered if he could turn it into something appealing. He said, “I really like the old technology of just picking up a receiver, pressing one button and having something happen.” Schulman thought bringing birds sounds to the abandoned phone was a way to add a bit of nature to the neighborhood.

Takoma Park city officials agreed, and they budgeted $5, 000 to complete the project. Schulman reached out to The McCaulay Library in Ithaca, New York, which agreed to send him a few dozen recordings of native birds. He then managed to gain the help of software engineer and artist Branden Hall to rewire the phone to play different bird calls. Schulman said he persuaded several of his friends to record short descriptions of each bird to go with the calls.

“One thing I like about the Bird Calls Phone is that it’s the opposite of a loud broadcast,” Schulman said. “Only one person can listen at a time, and each person will take away their own unique experience.”

1. What will listeners hear if they press buttons on the pay phone?
A.The calls of native birds.B.Songs in different languages.
C.Descriptions of local creatures.D.Instructions on reducing stress.
2. Which of the following best describes David Schulman?
A.Observant and nature-loving.B.Diligent and easy-going.
C.Serious and public-spirited.D.Ambitious and kind-hearted.
3. What can be inferred about the project?
A.It encourages art appreciation.B.It presents the harmony among birds.
C.It turns loud broadcasts into private phones.D.It receives broad support from the community.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Violinist Specializes in EcologyB.Pick up the Phone, Hear Bird songs
C.Close to Nature, Far From DepressionD.Turn Trash into Treasure in Washington

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了狗可以帮助主人降低心脏病的风险。

6 . Dogs are man’s best friends, and they may be the heart’s best friends as well.

A group of heart disease experts from the American Heart Association (AHA) reviewed research connecting heart health with owning a dog and found that owning a dog has a likely nexus with a lower risk of heart disease for those without a history of heart problems, and with greater survival rates among heart disease patients.

The group, chaired by Dr. Glenn Levine, a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, released a scientific statement in favor of having a dog to lower the risk of heart disease by helping people to be more physically active as well as reduce blood pressure and minimize the effects of stress. Previous studies showed that the companionship and close relationship that owners build with their dogs can boost levels of anti-stress hormones (抗应激激素) that can increase resilience (适应力) and help people to cope with stressful situations. One of the studies found, for example, that those who adopted dogs enjoyed a drop in blood pressure, while another revealed that among 5,200 adults, those who owned dogs were 54% more likely to get recommended levels of exercise and be active than non-dog owners. That trend is supported by other studies that found people who owned dogs were less likely to be overweight.

According to a report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), dogs aren’t a panacea (灵丹妙药) against heart disease, and it’s likely that taking care of them requires their owners to get more exercise, which can reduce stress, weight and blood pressure and thus benefit the heart. “If someone adopts a pet, but still sits on the couch and smokes and eats whatever he wants and doesn’t control his blood pressure,” Levine told the Nero York Times, “that’s not a wise strategy to decrease the risk”.

1. What does the underlined word “nexus” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Comparison.B.Similarity.C.Combination.D.Link.
2. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Stress is the cause of heart attack.
B.People raising pets can be slimmer.
C.Dogs’ companion holds back hormone functions.
D.Anti-stress hormone levels are low in dog owners.
3. Which statement might CDC support?
A.Dog owners work out more by walking the dog.
B.Dogs can be trained to detect high blood pressure.
C.Dogs can prevent owners from smoking on the couch.
D.Dog owners attach importance to monitoring heart health.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.How dogs promote owners’ mental health.
B.Raising dogs can help reduce heart attack.
C.What are the advantages of raising dogs.
D.Having a dog may lower heart disease risk.

8 . Using CRISPR genome (基因组) editing on a few common crops, a team of plant and soil scientists seeks to greatly increase and speed up carbon storage to help fight climate change.

To prevent dangerous levels of global warming, scientists say it won’t be enough to just stop burning fossil fuels that release carbon into the air. Because it’s nearly impossible for humanity to do that as fast as is now required, we will also need to pull carbon out of the air and secure it.

Plants are among the best tools we have to do this, since these living solar collectors already capture billions of tons of carbon dioxide each year from the atmosphere through photosynthesis (光合作用). About half of that carbon winds up in roots and eventually the soil, where it can stay for hundreds to thousands of years.

But what if we could create plants and soils that are better at capturing carbon? With CRISPR genome editing—a new molecular (分子的) biology tool that allows scientists to make edits to the DNA code that underpins all life—that might be possible.

Last month, the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), a research team founded by CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, began to explore the idea. With an $11-million donation from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a team of researchers made a three-year effort using CRISPR to create new crop varieties that photosynthesi ze more efficiently and transport more carbon into the soil. Eventually, the researchers hope to create gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds that could—if planted around the globe--pull more than a billion extra tons of carbon out of the air annually.

It’s an ambitious goal, and the team is likely to face numerous challenges in the lab before its CO2-cleaning plants can be put in the ground. Additional social, policy, and ethical considerations will determine whether those crops are widely accepted by farmers. But the researchers believe their ambitious project is beneficial to cope with climate crisis.

1. What is the purpose of using CRISPR genome editing on crops?
A.To improve soil structure.B.To increase carbon storage.
C.To create new crop varieties.D.To help fight climate change.
2. What does the underlined word “capture” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Mix.B.Release.C.Absorb.D.Grab.
3. What can be inferred from this text?
A.CO2-cleaning plants can be put in the ground now.
B.It is still unknown whether gene-edited crops will be accepted.
C.Researchers have successfully created gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds.
D.CRISPR genome editing will face so many challenges that it has no future.
4. What is the researchers’ attitude to the gene-edited crops?
A.Hopeful.B.Doubtful.C.Indifferent.D.Negative.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究人员发现动物会使用一种特殊的树树脂作为药物来疗伤。文章解释了研究开展的经过以及发现。

9 . Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.

Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.

Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).

While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.

This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.

1. Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?
A.They are trying to cure diseases.B.They would like to digest what they eat.
C.They feel like occupying the land.D.They are attracting companions’ attention.
2. What do researchers find through camera-traps?
A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.D.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals
3. What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Populations.B.Characteristics.C.Similarities.D.Flexibilities.
4. What is the possible significance of the discovery?
A.Promoting evolution of creatures.B.Increasing the production of resin.
C.Contributing to forest conservation.D.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了一项新研究发现,世界上10000种爬行动物中有近五分之一面临灭绝的威胁。并介绍了原因和保护措施。

10 . A new study by the Zoological Society of London has found that nearly one in five of the world’s 10,000 species of reptiles (爬行动物) are threatened with extinction. The study, which has been printed in the journal Biological Conservation, was carried out by more than 200 experts who assessed the risk of extinction of 1,500 reptiles selected at random from around the globe.

The primary author of the paper, Monika Bohm, explained to the Zoological Society:” Reptiles are often associated with extreme habitats and tough environmental conditions, so it is easy to assume that they will be fine in our changing world. “However, that’s far from the truth:” Many species are very high specialized in terms of habitat use and the climatic conditions they require for day to day functioning, “Bohm said.” This makes them particularly sensitive to environmental changes. “The paper highlights three critically endangered species in its research, including the jungle runner lizard Ameiva vittata, which has only ever been spotted in the Cochabamba region of the Bolivian jungle—an area under threat from the growth of agriculture and logging. The two most recent searches for the species have been unsuccessful. Meanwhile in Haiti, six of the nine species of Anolis lizard in the country risk extinction due to increasing deforestation (毁林).

Also at risk are freshwater turtles, with 50% of all species at risk of extinction from hunting; turtle parts are in high demand as ingredients in traditional medicine. According to the study 30% of freshwater reptile species are also in danger of completely disappearing.

Reptiles have a long evolutionary history: snakes, lizards, crocodiles and tuataras first appeared on earth around 300 million years ago. They are an important part of many ecosystems. ”This is a very important step towards assessing the conservation status of reptiles globally, “Philip Bowles from the IUCN Species Survival Commission said in response to the study.” Tackling the identified habitat loss is key conservation priorities in order to transfer declines in these reptiles.”

1. How many species of reptiles are endangered?
A.1,000.B.1,500.C.2,000.D.5,000.
2. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Environmental changes cause species variation.
B.More trees are being cut down in the Bolivian jungle.
C.Reptiles can easily adapt to extreme habitats and climate.
D.Species extinction results from tough environment conditions.
3. Why are freshwater turtles at risk?
A.Because local people hunt them for fun.B.Because their parts have medical value.
C.Because they struggle to survive in the wild.D.Because they can be cooking ingredients.
4. How can we conserve these reptiles according to the last paragraph?
A.To reduce habitat destruction.B.To increase the harvest of forest trees.
C.To assess the current conditions of reptiles.D.To further the study on the evolutionary history.
