文章大意:本文是应用文。文章主要介绍一些与孩子们一起进行绿色旅行的小贴士。

1 . Tips for Green Travel with Kids

Travelling doesn’t mean letting go of all the eco-friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life. Here are a few tips for green travel with kids.

Booking nonstop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions (碳排放). If the closest local airport doesn’t have nonstop flights to a certain place, check with other local airports to see if nonstop flights are available.     1

It’s easy when travelling to pull in to fast food restaurants for snacks.     2     My kids love to help plan snacks. I let them create their own snacks for the trip at home.

3     At the airport, keep your reusable bottles empty until you have passed through the security (机场安检区). Fill them up on the other side of the security checkpoint. Single-use plastic water bottles create unnecessary waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health.

4     In addition, opening a few windows and turning off the air conditioner (空调) are also good ways to save energy. You should also help your children keep their good, green habits while travelling. Sometimes vacation can mean more than one shower each day-once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention to the number of showers (淋浴) and the length of showers.     5

A.Walking is good for your health.
B.Try to cut back to save water and energy.
C.But you can pack healthy food from home.
D.Travelling is a great chance to introduce your kids to the world.
E.Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along wherever you travel.
F.Save energy by turning off the hotel room lights when you head out for the day.
G.You might have to drive a bit farther, but saving on carbon emissions makes it worthwhile.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要描述了植物的生长环境的问题,介绍了植物生长需要四种东西:温暖,水,土壤,食物。

4 . Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?

To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.

Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of the stones to grow in.

Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.

What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍狗的嗅觉。

5 . Experts say that the ability of dogs to smell is one million times stronger than that of humans. With so much sniff (闻) power, it’s hardly surprising that they stick their heads out of car windows. They don’t care about the scenery. What they’re after are the smells.

When dogs put their faces into the wind, their upper lips and noses are sniffing, their eyes partly closed, and their ears folded back. It looks as if they’re enjoying themselves very much, but mainly they’re concentrating. It’s as though they’re closing down all the rest of their senses to concentrate on this one. Every dog loves to hang his head out of the window, and all dogs have an excellent sense of smell. This ability is increased when they are moving quickly, which is one reason that they take advantage of open car windows. It also probably makes them excellent hunters.

Smell is so important to dogs that they have two systems for it. One is in the nose, which consists of a huge amount of tissue (组织) with scent receptors (嗅觉感受器). This area takes up about 1/2 square inch in humans, but up to 20 square inches in some dogs. As air moves over the tissue, odor molecules (气味分子) reach the millions of scent receptors. The more air flowing there is, the better dogs smell. So they love to put their faces into the wind.

Dogs have a second system in their mouths, where a tiny pipe leads to Jacobson’s organ (犁鼻器). Its task is to catch different types of smells. Dogs depend on it to find the sources of smells.

Nearly one billion animals died in the Australian bushfires. That number would have been even     1    (large) if it had not been for wombats(袋熊). When the fires started, their underground homes     2    (become) places of shelter for many other lives.

Wombats are small, furry mammals native to Australia. There are three wombat species. Northern and southern wombats have furry noses,     3     common wombats have bare skin on noses. You shouldn’t let the     4    (appear) of wombats fool you, though. Despite their size, they are     5    (unbelievable) fast. They often pile up their poop     7     a way to mark their areas. Scientists believe the square shape     8    (form) to stop the poop from rolling away.

Now there are only about 500 northern wombats     9    (survive) in the wild. The species is considered to be critically endangered. Luckily, conservationists are attempting     10    (help). In the 1980s, just 35 northern wombats were left alive — so things are improving!

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了位于美国阿拉斯加州的冰河湾国家公园。

8 . Today, we visit one of the most famous parks — Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. This huge park in the southeastern part of the state covers more than 10 thousand square kilometers of the Alaskan wilderness. It includes mountains, glaciers, fjords (峡湾), and even rain forests. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions.

As its name suggests much of Glacier Bay is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover a large area of the park.

The glaciers found in the park today are what remain from an ice development known as the Little Ice Age. That period began about 4,000 years ago. During the Little Ice Age, the cold weather caused the ice to grow and develop. That growth continued until the 1700s, when the climate began to warm. The hotter temperatures caused the ice to start melting (融化). That melting led the huge glacier to divide into more than 1,000 different glaciers.

The extremely tall mountains seen in Glacier Bay were formed by the ice developing and then melting over time. The melting of the ice also created water that filled in and created the many fjords within the park. Fjords are narrow parts of the ocean that sit between cliffs or mountains.

Glacier Bay is a popular place for people searching for adventure. Some visitors choose to explore the park by kayak. The small, narrow boats offer visitors a chance to experience the park’s many fjords and its hundreds of kilometers of coastline.

3. What do you know about fjords mentioned in the passage?
A.They are formed on the top of mountains.B.The melting of the ice is also called fjords.
C.Water is the source of creating many fjords.D.Fjords move as the oceans flow around.
4. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种奇异的鸟——几维鸟。

10 . Kiwis are unique in a lot of interesting ways. They have many characteristics that are not found in any other bird.

It is assumed that the kiwi’s ancestor was able to fly and reached New Zealand. Once on the island, it lost its ability to fly and eventually became the kiwi known today. Kiwis have feathers that look like hair and very strong and muscular legs. They rule the ground instead of the air. They can smell very well. Kiwis are quite shy and usually only come out at night. Kiwis can live a long time, between 25 and 50 years.

A female kiwi carries a huge egg about its body size. The kiwi is about the same size as a chicken but its egg is actually six times as large as a chicken’s egg. The reason for this is that the kiwi doesn’t have to fly, so there aren’t any limits on its weight. The female has to eat three times as much as usual to help the egg develop. Right before the egg is laid she can’t eat anything because the egg presses against her stomach, leaving no room for food.

All kiwi species are endangered. On average, twenty-seven die each week. They have been affected most by deforestation and invasive mammals. Before humans came to New Zealand, the only mammals on the island were bats and seals. The kiwi never had to worry about predators before, but now since it cannot fly, and lays its eggs on the ground, it is pretty defenceless against invasive mammals such as rats and stoats. Stoats kill a lot of the chicks, while dogs kill a lot of adult birds, usually by accident, because they are quite delicate (脆弱的) .

1. Which is kiwis’ unique characteristic?
A.They can’t fly with no wings.
B.They can live more than 50 years.
C.They rule the air instead of the ground.
D.They seldom or never come out in the daytime.
2. Why does a female kiwi carry a huge egg?
A.It eats three limes as much as usual.
B.It focuses too much on developing its egg.
C.Its body weight will increase without limit.
D.The egg presses against her stomach.
3. Which kind of mammal does no harm to kiwis?
A.The bat.B.The rat.
C.The stoat.D.The dog.
4. Which is a suitable title for the passage?
A.Endangered Kiwi SpeciesB.Kiwis- Unique Birds
C.Get Close to the Bird WorldD.Why Can’t Kiwis Fly?
