As we all know, plastic products like bags, bottles, toys and various other products end up in our oceans daily. They then pollute and kill marine animals, which ultimately affects humans because it causes widespread starvation among sea life which we depend on for food sources. With global levels of plastic waste in the ocean at an all-time high, there has never been a better time to consider making your swimwear from alternative sources.
It’s time to end the plastic waste polluting our oceans, but we’re not going to wait for someone else to do it. Creating swimsuits and other clothing items out of plastic collected from our oceans might seem pretty far-fetched, but Seamore (after Seamus Malone, our founder) is doing just that. We aim to make people more aware of how much plastic they use every day by providing stylish swimsuits made entirely from recycled ocean plastics.
The process is simple. Gather plastic waste from oceans and waterways, clean it, and turn it functional. Manufacturers (生产商) receive recycled plastic pellet (团粒) material and they press those pellets into fiber sheets; and then they die-cut, sew, or print those fibers into whatever products they want. It’s manufacturers who can decide whether their final product will be recyclable or not. Swimwear collections made from recycled materials found in our oceans illustrate how much impact we can have on our world when we set out to do so with pure intentions.
Today, as more and more people are taking part in water-centric activities, there is greater demand for water-friendly clothing options, especially among individuals looking for alternatives that meet their needs for comfort and functionality in and out of water. But the sad truth is that most of us have no idea where our clothing comes from — and if a recent report is accurate, one-third of all clothing purchased isn’t even worn before it ends up in a landfill.

4 . As one of the city’s most popular free outdoor events, the Cape Town Carnival is a multicultural celebration which focuses on social inclusion and bridging the divide between the diverse communities of the Western Cape and specifically Cape Town. It’s a celebration of the many diverse cultures which makes Cape Town stand out from the most world-famous cities. The carnival is considered a community participation event by the Western Cape Government and draws bigger crowds each year.
The event serves a platform for local performance groups, designers, musicians and artists to showcase their talents to the world. Every year, it may create over 1, 000 part-time jobs. The long-term vision, however, is to create more programmes focusing on skills development, thus permanently employing people. Since 2010 when the carnival was held on Long Street, it has become the festival of the year, and has grown from 17, 000 spectators to as many as 55, 000. This year, the carnival will be held on the Fan Walk in Green Point.
And its theme is Mother City, Mother Nature, exploring two of Cape Town’s greatest assets, its natural beauty and its people. The festival will showcase what makes the Mother City one of the most unique cities in the world. Over 2, 000 shining costumed performers and musicians will take to Cape Town’s Fan Walk, entertaining viewers with floats (花车) and dynamic dance routines. The parade (游行) will be followed by a grand street party, showcasing some of South Africa’s hottest musical talent.
Fans and tourists are encouraged to join in the street festivities anytime from 16: 00, when it will turn into a pedestrian walkway with 2km of food stands and festive hospitality (好客) areas. Later in the evening Cape Town will up the pace with the most appealing and festive open air party, the Cape Town Carnival Street Party! 6 . Moments ago, a seal was resting on a piece of floating ice deep in an Antarctic channel. Then three hungry killer whales appeared. When the seal noticed them, it was already surrounded.
On this sheet of sea ice, the nearly thousand-pound sea l would be unreachable for most of his enemies in nature. But these killer whales had mastered a hunting technique called wave washing: working together to turn water into a weapon.
Having identified their target, the killer whales formed a battle line and started rushing toward the ice. Just before reaching it, they rolled to their sides in a single, synchronized (同步的) motion. The wave they created was so powerful that it flooded the ice sheet and washed the frightened seal close to the edge of the ice sheet. Slowly and methodically, they repeated the attack. At the third time, the wave sent the helpless seal flying into the sea. It struggled to climb onto a piece of ice, but then disappeared from view...
“The level of intelligence that went into making each wave was staggering. They solved the problem with very complex teamwork. They used water as a tool,” said wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory, who had spent a decade tracking those killer whales, known as Bls. “I rarely saw failed hunts. This behavior was not what they were born with. It was learned and mastered over decades. Every time they made waves, it almost felt like more of a teaching experience than hunting. It was terrifying to watch.”
But as Antarctica warms and sea ice disappears, seals are increasingly staying on land, out of killer whales’ reach.
“I’ve found Bls are losing about 5 percent of their population every year. Whether this subgroup will go extinct or just adapt their behavior, I don’t know,” said Gregory. “But with fewer opportunities for the killer whales to wave wash, I’m seeing an extinction of a culture.”

7 . Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots. The spots are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. The skin beneath the spots may also help giraffes stay at the right temperature. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots.
On July 31, a baby giraffe was born at Bright’s Zoo with no spots at all. Instead, its fur is light brown. The giraffe is a reticulated(网状的) giraffe, which is one of the four different kinds of giraffes. It was born perfectly healthy. It just doesn’t have any spots. David Bright, who runs the zoo, told Newsweek, “This is beyond rare. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan.” Currently, the young giraffe is believed to be the only spotless giraffe in the world.
The young giraffe is a girl. Giraffes are born quite large. This one isn’t quite a month old, and she’s already about 1.8 meters tall. Mr. Bright says she’s very sweet, and has a “laid-back” personality.
A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots. Mr. Bright says that the new giraffe might not have survived if she’d been born in the wild.
Reticulated giraffes are already struggling. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain.
Bright’s Zoo is hoping to use the young spotless giraffe to bring attention to efforts to protect giraffes. Mr. Bright says the zoo hopes to raise money for groups like Save Giraffes Now. So far,the young giraffe hasn’t been given a name. Mr. Bright’s family has come up with four possible choices. Now the z oo is asking people to vote for their favorite name.

9 . Biophilic design (亲生物设计) is a concept used within the building industry to increase people’s connection with the natural environment by using direct nature, indirect nature, space, and place conditions. It is argued that this idea has health, environmental, and economic benefits for building occupants (居住者) and urban environments, with few drawbacks. Although its name was coined in recent history, indicators of biophilic design have been seen in architecture from as far back as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Studies show that incorporating the natural environment into buildings can have a positive influence on physical and psychological well-being.
Studies by Roger S. Ulrich have consistently found physical health promoting outcomes associated with viewing nature scenes through windows. In his studies, he assessed patients' recovery from surgery. Half the patients had rooms with a view of green trees while the others saw a brick wall. Patients in the rooms with the nature view stayed in the hospital for fewer days and had a more positive recovery process in general than the patients who had a view of the wall. Similar results were found in a field study of office workers by Rachel Kaplan.
Additionally, children in low-income urban housing who had problems with learning because of being unable to pay attention to things for very long showed improved scores on a standardised measure of attention deficit disorder (注意力缺陷障碍) when they moved to houses with more outdoor natural vegetation.
From an economic aspect, people are likely to spend more on houses that have views of nature; buyers are willing to spend 7% more on homes with excellent scenery, 58% more on houses that look toward water, and 127% more on those that are next to water.
Appreciating natural beauty isn’t something that some people can enjoy and others can’t; it happen without effort or even conscious awareness. So the more our buildings can make use of our ancient sense beauty, the more likely they will support us psychologically and emotionally, as well as functionally.

10 . It happens in every disaster (灾难): For those in need, people often donate (捐赠) things that turn out to be more of a trouble.
Juanita Rilling remembers it happened in 1988 when she was a disaster expert trying to help people suffering from a hurricane (飓风) in Honduras. “One morning I received a call from one of our logistic operators (物流运营商), and he explained to me that there was a plane carrying medical supplies that needed to land,” says Rilling. “But the ground was full, with lots of donations that no one had required. The plane—full of needed supplies—had to find someplace else to go. And it ended up stopping everyone’s plans by about 48 hours, which is important time in a disaster.”
Rilling now runs the Center for International Disaster Information, which is trying to make sure things like that don’t happen again. So when Superstorm Sandy hit, Rilling’s group started a project to encourage money donation. “Even a small donation can make a big difference and can quickly become exactly what people affected by a disaster need most,” Rilling says. But despite this, donators do that over and over. About 60% of the things donated after a disaster couldn’t be used. Often it’s old clothing or food.
Meghan Hara, who deals with kind donations for the American Red Cross, says she knows that some people are careful with giving money. And she doesn’t think that the need to give something concrete (实物) should be completely stopped.
“Part of what people are doing is that they’re helping, and they’re trying to help. What we need to work out is how to effectively deal with that,” Hara says.
