文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了猫咪喜欢盒子这一现象。
1 .

File it under strange things cats do! Last month, a post made thousands of people do some rather strange behavior themselves: taping a square on the floor and seeing if their cat would sit in it. Evidently, a lot of feline (猫科的) friends ended up sitting in these pretend boxes their people made, according to the Washington Post. But why? Why do cats love boxes — even outlines (轮期) of boxes?

Well, why do cats do anything they do? People have been trying to figure that out for the past 4,000 years. Feline behavioral scientists say that cats love boxes because seeking out confined (封闭的) spaces is the nature of the larger species from which the domesticated (被驯养的) cats evolved. Out in the wild, confined spaces allow felines to protect themselves and track their prey (捕食物) according to Live Science. A study out of Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed that hiding in boxes significantly reduces cats’ stress levels and can even make them more willing to interact with humans overall. Another study suggests that they are drawn to boxes because they are more comfortable at a higher temperature than most of us keep our homes. Thus, the box provides them with a way to stay warm.

One Reddit user guessed that the ancient Egyptians kept what we now know as the domesticated cat having a natural preference for sitting in boxes because it helped to keep their pets from wandering. “By the hundredth generation or so, even the outline of a box was enough.…. and that habit is still present in them to this day.” This needs more scientific evidence. But it could help to explain why a cat would be drawn to a tape-on-the-floor box.

1. What does the author mainly want to introduce by mentioning that post?
A.Cats can easily get fooled.
B.Cats are a very strange animal.
C.Cats have a preference for boxes.
D.Cats love playing with their owners.
2. According to feline behavioral scientists, why do cats love confined spaces?
A.They put their prey in confined spaces.
B.They want to interact with humans this way.
C.They get used to reducing stress in confined spaces.
D.They’ve evolved this interest from the early bigger cat family.
3. Which of the following explanations remains to be proved?
A.Cats need to keep their body warm.
B.Cats feel more comfortable in the box.
C.Cats were made to keep still in the box.
D.Confined spaces bring cats a sense of security.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.When do cats develop a taste for boxes?
B.Why do cats do anything felines do?
C.Why do cats have strange behavior?
D.Why do cats love boxes?

2 . The words “protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens since some animals are in danger of dying out. But sometimes the reality can be a little different from what people read or watch.

About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. It’s been the first bear hunt since 1994.

Animal protection groups were against this decision. But local officials explained that the black bear population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.

This brings an old question back into the spotlight — which is more important, protecting animals or protecting people’s interests(利益)?

This question is asked in other countries too. In Switzerland, a wolf was sentenced to death by the Swiss government months ago. This is because the wolf killed 38 sheep and local people lost a lot of money. Days ago in China, three old men were arrested for killing a serow (鬣羚), a protected species. But they insisted they didn’t know about this and killed the animal because it ruined their crops.

However, these stories don’t always mean that animal protection stops due to human interests, especially involving economic development. A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and 300 bears. But his base also offered jobs to local people.

“There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development,” said Robert May, a British biologist at Oxford University. “But we shouldn’t push either one to the side, as the future is hanging in the balance.”

1. In October 2015, Florida held its first bear hunt after about________.
A.five yearsB.ten years
C.fourteen yearsD.twenty-one years
2. What does the underlined word “menace” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Danger.B.Chance.
C.Relief.D.Treasure.
3. What does the author aim to tell us by mentioning Zhou Weisen’s story?
A.Protecting animals needs hard work.
B.Zhou was good at feeding wild animals.
C.Zhou had a good relationship with local people.
D.Protecting animals can bring economic development.
4. Which of the following statements might Robert May agree with?
A.Human development should be considered first.
B.We should pay more attention to animal protection.
C.We should consider both the environment and human interests.
D.It’s difficult to find proper ways to solve environmental problems.
5. Why was the wolf in Switzerland sentenced to death?
A.Because the wolf killed 38 sheep
B.Because local people lost a lot of money
C.Because the wolf are dangerous
D.Both A&B

4 . 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

The development of human society brings us opportunities as well as challenges. One of these challenges is how to live harmoniously with nature.

Millions of years ago, our ancestors realized that they were entirely dependent on nature. They made for themselves totems symbolizing plants or animals. By doing this they showed great respect for nature and also showed us that mankind and nature should not be divided as, they were originally one. Yet this delicate balance between humans and nature has long been ignored and now the damage is done.

Today, around the globe, as many as three species die every 60 minutes. “Species that become extinct are lost forever. We can't bring them back,” says biologist Stuart Pimm. At this rate, in the following 50 years, all known species could disappear. The collective actions of man are changing the course of rivers and streams and altering the atmosphere's protective ozone layer. These may bring an end to the lives of creatures on Earth. With the gradual extinction of a number of species, we are getting lonelier and taking 'a step closer to our own extinction.

We cannot exist without biodiversity. But how? What strategy can satisfy both immediate human needs and long-term environmental protection? The answer is the sustainable development that maintains economic growth and at the same time protects our environment. For example, conservationists have never stopped searching for ways to protect biodiversity. Thanks to their ceaseless effort, an increasing number of biological breakthroughs will benefit the survival of the species. More and more people realize what biodiversity means to us. And we do need a revival of the respect that our ancestors used to give to nature.

We shall always remember don't ask what nature can do for us; ask what wean do for nature.

1. How did our ancestors show respect for nature? (no more than 10 words)
2. How many species are dying out every day globally today?(no more than 2 words)
3. According to the passage, what is sustainable development?(no more than 15 words)
4. What causes the increasing number of biological breakthroughs?(no more than 5 words)

5 . As we all know, trees are not moving: they stay more or less where you plant them, and no one worries about finding a tree wandering around a park or backyard.

However, there is one special exception, some say: the so - called walking palm tree (Socratea exorrhiza) found in the rainforests of Central and South America. Many people believe it can really walk around. This is because of its unusual root system; while most trees have one trunk (树干), the palm breaks into many smaller roots a few feet of the ground, giving it the appearance of many little legs.

The amazing walking ability of the palm tree has always been told by rainforest guides to tourists for years, and appears in many sources of documents as an amazing plant adaptation. As journalist Sherry Seethaler writes in her book Curious Folks Ask 2, “Screen writers searching for the perfect B - movie plant hero could take inspiration from the walking palm. The tree walks slowly from shade to sunlight by growing new roots toward the light.”

A tree that walks in search of the sun is a fascinating, strange story. And it's not true, either; the tree is real enough, but it doesn't walk. It sits where it began to grow, not moving except under the force of wind.

Biologist Gerardo Avalos is one of the world's top experts on the Socratea exorrhiza. His analysis of the plant and its roots shows that the walking tree can't walk because its roots don't move. A few roots on one side or another may die of, but the trunk itself remains, well rooted to the spot.

“My paper proves that the belief of the walking palm is just a myth (谎言) ,” Avalos said. “Thinking that a palm tree could actually track the sunlight changes by moving slowly over the forest floor. . . is a myth that tourist guides find its amusing to tell the visitors to the rainforest.”

1. Why do people think Socratea exorthiza can walk around?
A.It has no roots undergroundB.It appears to have several trunks
C.It appears to have many little legsD.It grows a few feet off the ground
2. We can learn from the text that the palm tree ________ .

3. According to the text, Sherry Seethaler's description of the palm tree is ________ .
A.scientificB.factualC.correctD.wrong
4. Biologist Gerardo Avalos thinks that ________ .
A.the palm tree can not walk at allB.the palm tree can not move its leaves
C.the palm tree can not track the sunlightD.The palm tree can not keep its trunk growing
5. What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To report a new discoveryB.To introduce a strange plant
C.To uncover a mystery in natureD.To criticize people's bad behaviors

6 . Climate change can happen naturally or in response to human activities, including the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests. Burning fossil fuels creates gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. In fact, about 90 percent of the heat is absorbed by the ocean. So it’s really important to track the oceans’ warming, says Jörn Callies. He’s an oceanographer at the California Institute of Technology. Tracking how that heat affects the ocean is difficult because of its depth and size, though. This makes it hard for scientists to understand long-term changes in temperature.

In September 2020, Callies and other scientists reported a new way to check the temperature of the ocean. As temperature affects how fast sound travels (sound travels faster in warmer water than colder water). Scientists originally proposed using sounds produced by machines to measure ocean warming, but it would affect marine animals. Whales, for example, use sound to communicate. Finally, Callies and his team showed they could use the natural sounds produced by earthquake instead.

For their study, the scientists looked at data for 2,000 pairs of earthquakes. Each earthquakes pair happened in the same place but at different times. What did the scientists find? The sound waves traveled a few tenths of a second faster in more recent quakes than in older ones. This difference suggests a warming trend of 0.04 degrees Celsius (about 0.08 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade. A tiny amount of a degree may not sound like a lot. But it represents a huge of heat that the ocean absorbed. It takes a lot of heat to change the temperature of a body of water almost 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) wide and several kilometers deep.

However, Callies says it’s not the time to worry about that yet. They don’t know if the warming is only specific to the one region (East Indian Ocean) or if it’s happening elsewhere. “We just don’t have the data yet.” he says.

1. The heat caused by burning fossil fuels is mainly ________.
A.cleared by the forestB.disappearing naturally
C.taken in by oceanD.trapped by human activities
2. It is difficult to track the heat in the ocean because ________.
A.scientists can’t understand the changes in temperature
B.measuring the temperatures cost too much
C.the changes in temperature is too small
D.oceans are so deep and big to measure
3. Scientists choose sounds produced by earthquakes to track the ocean’s warming because ________.
A.natural sounds is less harmful to marine animals
B.sounds produced by machines are not correct
C.marine animals absorb sounds produced by machines
D.sounds produced by earthquakes travels faster than those by machines
4. Which conclusion can be drawn from the third paragraph?
A.The change of sound sped affects temperature.
B.The change in the ocean’s heat can be ignored.
C.The experiment was not a success.
D.The change in the ocean’s heats is actually very big.
5. What does Callies mean in the last paragraph?
A.Study should be continued and more data need to be collected.
B.There is no need to worry about the climate change.
C.He lost confidence in the study.
D.The scientists can’t analyze the data correctly.

8 . When you think of a national park, you generally picture fresh air and wild animals, right? Well, now you're going to have to add tea shops and something called “the Underground” to your definition, because London, England has signed up to be the first “National Park City.”

London was founded by the Romans around 2,000 years ago and people have continually lived there since then. In all that time, however, nobody had the idea to replace all the parks with big box stores or high buildings, which means London already has a much lower urban density(密度)than most of the world's cities. Nowadays about a third of the city is green space.

In July 2019 London announced its willingness to become the world's first National Park City. Now the city is moving toward the goal of achieving 50% green space by the year 2050 by connecting and increasing public parks, greening unused parking lots and the private yards of existing and new houses, and fixing some green roofs an existing building.

“Encouraged by the aims and values of our rural national parks, the London National. Park City is basically about making life better in the capital through both small everyday things and long-term thinking,” Daniel Raven-Ellison, who began the movement to make London at National Park City six years ago, said. “We've been doing that in London for centuries, which is why London is so green.” It's about going further to make the city greener, healthier and. wilder; making the city richer in wildlife.

London will have a much easier job achieving this type of green transformation than more. densely-urbanized cities like Paris and New York, which have. 10% and 27% green space. respectively. But that doesn't mean it's not possible — the National Park City Foundation hopes to include 25 more cities in addition to London. by the year 2025. Glasgow, Scotland and Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England are both considering becoming National Park Cities.

1. What makes London more likely to become a National Park City than other cities?
A.Its smaller population.
B.Its locals' requirements.
C.Its government's strict law.
D.Its wider area of green space.
2. Where can you find out about London's measures to achieve its goal?
A.In Paragraph 1.B.In Paragraph 2.
C.In Paragraph 3 .D.In Paragraph 4.
3. What does Daniel try to talk about in the fourth paragraph?
A.The importance of his movement.
B.The values of newly-founded parks.
C.The influence of green space on cities.
D.The preparation for setting up a movement.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.London is leading the world in park construction.
B.London becomes the world's first National Park City.
C.London is listed as the world's most-visited city.
D.London has built the world's first underground park.

9 . Inspired by the movement to protect the Carmanah Valley and Clayoquot Sound, I decided to devote myself to producing images for conservation full-time in 1992. Since that time my work has taken me all over the world and my photos have appeared in many major magazines. However, many of my most rewarding moments have come from working on projects in British Columbia, Canada, and sharing those images in slide show tours I have given throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

The more I travel and photograph in other parts of the world, the more I have come to realize the wilderness we have in Canada is truly special and rare.

I have always felt that as a photographer my goal is to approach the natural environment with the sense of wonder and curiosity that comes so naturally to children. This, I believe, is one of the basic keys not just to producing meaningful images, but more importantly, to gaining a full appreciation and enjoyment of the natural world.

I find that not only my best images, but also my most enjoyable experiences in nature, occur when I have an open mind and follow my intuition (直觉). When I feel drawn to a certain scene, I try to make the scene simple and not include anything that is not relevant. I also try all ways to look for beautiful light. Early morning and the end of the day almost always produce light that results in more pleasing images than those taken under the strong light in the middle of a sunny day. Soft cloudy skies are wonderful for photographing all day, especially in our beautiful forests or for small subjects like wildflowers. Rain, storms, and snow also provide wonderful opportunities for new and different kinds of images.

1. In the first paragraph, the author mainly tells us about________.
A.his working experiencesB.his goal as a photographer
C.his skills in photographingD.his understanding about conservation
2. It can be inferred that the author________.

B.To take his children to approach the nature.
C.To gain people’s appreciation and admiration.
D.To get close to nature with strong desire to know about it
4. Which of the following is true of the author’s images?
A.They are not easy to be produced in soft cloudy skies.
B.Sometimes the scenes in them are simple and don’t include irrelevant things.
C.If they are wildflowers, the best time to produce them is in the rain.
D.If produced at the end of the day, they are more beautiful than in the early morning.
5. What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To study the key to becoming a famous artist.
B.To show thoughts about nature photography.
C.To praise wonderful scenes they have in Canada.
D.To tell the most enjoyable experiences in nature.
