2 . A sad mother whale continued to carry her dead baby for a fifth day on Saturday, which is a rare occurrence in nature and is believed to be grieving (痛心的).
The whale, known as J35, is a member of the endangered (濒临灭绝的)family of killer whales, gave birth to her baby on Tuesday only to watch that it die within half an hour. "The baby was so newborn that it didn't have blubber(鲸脂). It kept sinking, and the mother would raise it to the surface," said Ken Balcomb, a scientist with the Center for Whale Research on San Juan Island, Washington State. Since then, she's been carrying the baby's body around on her nose, diving to pick it up again when it falls off. She was last sighted in the early evening on Saturday in Canadian waters.
Scientists have documented grieving behavior in other animals with close social bonds in small groups observed carrying newborns that did not survive. The baby whale was the first baby born in three years to the endangered species (物种), the Center for Whale Research said.
"More than 24 hours of grieving is a rare occurrence," says Ken Balcomb. "It is horrible. This is an animal that is a sentient being. It understands the social bonds that it has with the rest of its family members. She carried the baby in her womb (子宫)from 17 to 18 months, she is bonded to it and she doesn't want to let it go. It is that simple. She is grieving."
Researchers have been growing more concerned about the fortune of killer whales, who face three major challenges to their survival as a species: toxins(毒素), traffic and lack of adequate food. The most recent survey has found that they number just 75 in the area. For the last three years there have been no new babies born to the killer whales in the Pacific Northwest.

3 . The term “bird brain” is frequently used to describe a person’s lack of intelligence and good decision-making ability. However, some scientists believe it should be considered a compliment (恭维), given that many birds can perform tasks that were once considered uniquely within humans. These include manufacturing and using tools, solving problems. and planning for future needs. Now, Griffin, an African Grey parrot, has proved that birds may even have better visual memories than human adults and children.
The study, led by Hrag Pailian, a postdoctoral (博士后)fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, had the parrot compete in the shell game against twenty-one undergraduate students and twenty-one 6-to-8-year-old children. For those not familiar, the popular challenge involves hiding a small object under one of three, or more, upturned cups or nutshells, which are moved around. Participants are required to accurately identify the cup or nutshell under which the object lies.
The Harvard team began by placing different-colored pom-poms (绒球)under four cups and moving them randomly around. To make the task more challenging, the researchers required participants to track two, three, and four pom-poms at the same time. The cup positions were moved between zero to four times far each of the combinations. Griffin and the undergraduate students conducted 120 tests, while the children did 36.
An analysis of the results showed that Griffin outperformed the 6-to-8-year-olds across all levels on average. Even more impressive, the “bird brain” performed as well as, or slightly better than, the 21 Harvard students on 12 of the 14 trials! It was only in the final two tests, which had the most pom-poms and most movement, that the parrot lagged behind the adults. However, Griffin’s performance never dipped below that of the children. “Think about it: Grey parrot outperforms Harvard undergraduates. That’s pretty awesome.” said a delighted Pailian.
1. What is a person with “bird brain” usually like?A.Clever. | B.Stupid. |
C.Unique. | D.Active. |

I always wanted to raise a pet, but my mother didn’t agree with because I even couldn’t look after herself well. But recently, my mother changes her attitude. She bought me a lovely cat for my birthday gift. I promised keep it well. Since raised this lovely creature, I became patient. The most important thing was to feed food on time and cleaned the place that the cat lived. Sometimes I felt so dirty to do it, although I had made my promise and couldn’t break my words. I learned a lot from raising a pet. I started to consider my mother’s feelings when I became naughtily. I needed to make some changes and be a better girl.
5 . Waste sorting is a complex phenomenon that can be an important step toward a global circular economy. Maybe it even will be something we will look back on as one of the first steps toward an ecological society.
But sorting of waste could also mean participating in an activity that gradually weakens sustainable development by allowing unsustainable companies to use recycling as a way to pretend they are sustainable.
When Royal Dutch Shell, British-Dutch oil and gas company, wanted to dump an oil rig in the ocean in 1995 many people in Europe had just started to separate glass bottles and newspapers. The company’s plan was viewed as a sign of arrogance. The incident led to an important meeting, after which many companies started including environmental factors in their risk assessment.
The situation is different today. It is no longer clear if the kind of waste sorting done in Western nations is part of the problem or the solution. There are areas where the sorting of waste is working reasonably well, for example the glass and metal industries. But at a time when we are looking at a transformative system change and global sustainability, there is a need to fundamentally rethink waste sorting.
In the coming decades, the world needs to eliminate (消除) the use of fossil fuels, become more resource efficient lift billions out of poverty and ensure greater equity. In order to ensure this, we need a resource-efficient circular economy, and waste sorting can play a key role. But that should be a very different kind of waste sorting.
China could initiate the next generation of waste sorting systems. Such a waste sorting system would be a driver for innovation and extreme resource efficiency and a true step toward ecological civilization.

6 . Atoms and molecules in the air move constantly.
Air flows around a high-or low-pressure system in much the same way as water swirls (旋涡) around a hole. In the Northern Hemisphere, air that moves into a high-pressure system flows outward in a clockwise pattern. Air flowing upward in a region of low pressure moves counterclockwise.
Air is more dense (密集的) in a region of high pressure, so the air pushes out toward less dense regions. The air mass begins to warm as it goes down, which prevents the formation of clouds. The presence of clouds indicates that rain may be present in the air.
Rain associated with low-pressure systems holds true in much of the Northern Hemisphere.
A.This movement creates air pressure. |
B.So we can predict rain from the clouds. |
C.But the air pressure changes little in tropical climates. |
D.The higher the air pressure is, the faster the winds blow in and outwards. |
E.Humidity in the rising air of a low-pressure system becomes water droplets. |
F.This swirling air results in winds around or near the high-and low-pressure boundaries. |
G.High-pressure systems have light or no clouds, indicating fair weather without rain. |
The Theobroma Cacao tree, to use its scientific name, provides us with one of the world's most delicious foods—chocolate! Theobroma is a Greek word meaning 4food of the gods. The tree originally comes from the Amazon region of South America. Hand-sized pods that grow on the tree contain cacao seeds—often called ‘cocoa beans’. These seeds,or beans, are used to make chocolate.
The earliest use and consumption of cacao beans dates back to around 1000 B.C. Later, the Mayan and Aztec civilizations consumed cacao as a drink. They often flavored it with ingredients such as chili peppers, and other spices. It is believed that drinking cups of chocolate was important in Mayan rituals such as wedding ceremonies. Consuming cacao was also believed to have positive effects on health. In Peru, eating or drinking a mixture of chocolate and chili was said to be good for the stomach. The Aztecs thought it could even cure sicknesses!
Christopher Columbus, along with Spanish explorers, made his fourth voyage across the Atlantic in the early 1500s, and arrived on the coast of Honduras. It was at this time that he first discovered the value of cocoa beans, which were used as currency in many parts of Central America.
In the sixteenth century, chocolate was taken back to Spain by Hernando Cortez, another explorer. The Spanish people added ingredients such as sugar and vanilla to make it sweet. It later spread to France in the seventeenth century. The popularity of chocolate continued to spread further across Europe and the Americas. The only Asian country to adopt it at that time, though, was the Philippines, which the Spanish invaded in the sixteenth century.
As chocolate became more popular, the demand for people to work on the cocoa plantations increased. Slaves were brought to the Americas from Africa to farm the cocoa. Eventually, the cacao tree was taken to
Africa and cultivation(m) began there. Today, the African plantations provide almost seventy percent of the world's cacao, compared with one and a half percent from Mexico.
