2 . Michael Yellowlees set off to complete a 5, 000-mile walk across Canada in the spring of 2021,wearing a kilt(短褶裙)and carrying a few items in a handcart, including a guitar. The 32-year-oldmusician from Dunkeld, Scotland, walked from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the east coast of Newfoundland on the edge of the North Atlantic with his pet dog, Luna, an Alaskan husky,by his side.
Speaking about the Scottish Highlands, Mr Yellowlees said, "It is a beautiful landscape, but with a strong sense of sadness because of the absence of woodland, wildlife and people. So I decided to walk across the great wildernesses of Canada to raise funds for Trees for Life,a Scottish rewilding charity, and its work to restore(恢复)Scotland's Caledonian Forest. ”
The enthusiastic walker shared some of his experiences, including meeting black bears and hearing wolves cry loudly at night. He also mentioned a moment when he lost Luna after she jumped out of a little boat during a trip in the waterway section of the Trans Canada Trail in Northern Ontario.
Yet Mr Yellowlees was deeply touched by the warmth of the people along the way. In every town and village, people offered him food, shelter and donations. And he was accompanied into towns and cities by marching pipe bands and interviewed by newspapers, the radio and TV.
Steve Micklewright , chief executive officer of Trees for Life, said, “We followed Michael's journey across Canada with respect and admiration. Restoring native habitats and wildlife to the Highlands is a big task that no one can do alone. But Michael's extraordinary journey is proof that an individual can really make a difference. "
Bob Davidson, one of Michael Yellowlees' friends, said, “This is not a slow walk in the park, but a long march with heavy equipment on the rough road at an incredible pace. He's an amazing guy.”

3 . When I was eight years old, I entered an art contest hosted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and I won. I was so excited, but I didn’t even know what “endangered” meant at that time. That night, I asked my mom and we found out there were over 6,000 endangered species (物种)! I felt sad and angry. I told my mom I would like to help save them. She asked me, “How?” And I told her my plan.
She said once I painted ten, she’d create a Facebook page for me. To my mom’s surprise, I had 10 paintings done in 5 days. My Facebook page becomes a platform where I publish new works, share my opinions and raise people’s environmental awareness.
Facebook reporters came to interview me and wrote my story in the Community Voices and then many other websites shared it, making me shoot to fame overnight. My Facebook followers increased rapidly and some offered me money for an art exhibition. One of my paintings was sold at the Wolf Conservation Center by auction (拍卖) for $25,000 this summer.
At the age of 13, I have created more than three hundred paintings of endangered species. I use my website to sell them, and I also donate (捐赠) them and auction them to raise money to support the organizations I work with like IFAW, The Wolf Conservation Center in New York, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots and REST. I did a lot of research before choosing those organizations because I wanted to make sure the money I donated would be used for protecting wildlife and their natural homes. Those organizations have helped my dreams come true. Up to now I have donated $69,000, and my goal is $100,000.
We all have an important role to play and if we work together, we will change the world. We need to be brave and original; we should stand out and speak up. It isn’t always easy or popular but being true to ourselves is the bravest thing we can do.

5 . Some people have come up with a creative solution with monster-inspired (以怪物为灵感的) art works to deal with the flood of cicada (蝉) shells that have cropped up across the country.
The species, Brood X, have come to states across the eastern and southern U.S. A lot of cicadas deposited their shells in states including Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Normally, people have no choice but to deal with the shells wherever they go. However, a recently rediscovered art piece from 2018 has encouraged others to copy it.
Alex from Michigan created a big monster-inspired art work out of dozens or even hundreds of cicada shells. The monster took inspiration from old Japanese monster movies and shows, like Godzilla, Ultraman or Super Sentai— the show that Power Rangers is based on.
The interesting art work led to similar works from other artists. Albert, a student of University of Maryland, created a copy of a monster in Xenomorph. He said, “We are taking action! Getting ready for the coming risk of cicada shells with some art inspiration from Alex’s creations and other cicada shell artists will be there.”
The art is so unbelievable that FOX ran a fact-check on the art. The result is “yes”. People are harvesting hundreds of cicada shells to make monster-inspired art works.
Some curious people, such as Alice and Mary, are learning to make a cicada statue (雕像) of the monster Baltan in Ultraman step by step. Some people have taken a normal approach and simply create art inspired by cicadas. In New Jersey, people create life-size painted cicadas on sidewalks.

The place is a cultural mixing bowl of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous customs and heritage, and while for most people, the name Malaysia only brings pictures of Kuala Lumpur, there is a lot more to it. Let us take a look at some best places to visit in Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur
The capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, is a common favourite. Unlike most of the cities in the world, it is more than where the visitor lands and then goes off to other places, because Kuala Lumpur itself offers a lot. The beautiful skyline, adorned by Menara KL Tower and Petronas Tower, is a must-see. The Perdana Lake Gardens is another great sight. Excellent transport system is ready to help explore the city sights. The cuisine is a must-try, what with the mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian influence.
Penang

For one, its historic capital city, George Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, what with its landmark homes, fort, temples and museums. Penang offers an excellent spread, including some incredible street food. Some of the best treats and tastes are available at the food joints lining the waterfront esplanade named Gurney Drive.
Selangor
Selangor defines the most developed and populated states of Malaysia, closely following the urban sprawl of Kuala Lumpur. It has the National Zoo of Malaysia and a Formula One racetrack. There are theme parks including indoor snow parks frequented by hordes of travelers. It is a hot shopping zone, and the country's gambling capital, Gentling Highlands. Contrarily, there are the Batu Caves with Hindu shrines. Along the river in Kuala Selangor, one can see the exotic abundance of fireflies.
Malaysian Borneo
In contrast to the bright lights and concrete of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Borneo offers an abundance of green rain-forests and wildlife. It is the third largest island in the world and definitely one of the best places to visit in Malaysia. It often goes forgotten by those who stay fascinated by the mainland. But one must not miss Borneo's repertoire of natural wonders. Only a short, cheap flight away lies the options of scuba diving in Sabah, caving in Sarawak, and the many other adventures.

8 . Human beings use animals for a lot of purposes, including research. By studying animals, it is possible to learn information that cannot be learned in any other way. Animals are used in research when there is a need to find out what happens in the whole living body. There are four main reasons why animals are used in research.
Adding to scientific knowledge through basic biological research helps us understand how living things work, and use that understanding for the benefit(利益)of both humans and animals. The study of animals is an important part of the whole research process. The bodies of animals are like humans’ in the way that they perform many important functions(功能) such as breathing, movement, sight, and hearing. To treat disease, doctors and scientists must understand how the healthy body works.
Humans and animals share hundreds of illnesses, so animals can act as models for the study of human illness. For example, rabbits suffer form emphysema, a lung problem that makes it hard to catch their breath. Dogs suffer from cancer, bleeding disorders and so on. Cats suffer from some of the same vision loss as humans. From such models we learn how diseases affect the body and more.]
Once researchers learn more about a particular disease, animals are used to develop and test the treatments. For example, medicines for Parkinson’s disease have been developed by using animal models with Parkinson’s-like symptoms(症状). Models such as these are an important part of using biological research to solve real medical problems.
New medicines need testing because researchers must test both the beneficial and the harmful effects of a medicine on a living body. A medicine must be tested in a suitable animal model before clinical trials(临床试验) in humans can take place.
1. According to Paragraph 2, why are animals used in research?A.They may be healthier than humans. |

C.They may have the same diseases as humans. |
D.Their bodies are like humans’ in many functions. |
A.By listing figures. |
B.By giving examples. |
C.By comparing humans with animals. |
D.By showing some research finding. |
A.introduce a new discovery of medicine |
B.prove that animals have the same disease |
C.explain how to use animals for testing new medicines |
D.gather more information about Parkinson’s symptoms |
A.Tests in animals should be carried out legally. |
B.Not all new medicines can be tested in animals. |
C.New medicines must be first tested in animal models. |
D.Not all medicines have both beneficial and harmful effects. |

He was a tiny, playful little dog when we first got him. Sophia has been my hero because he has helped save my life four times.
The first time was during the early morning. Sophia slept on the warm carpet while I slept in my bed. Before I went to bed, I took a candy into my room with me. It was the one I couldn't have. Soon, I ate it. Very quickly, my throat started to become big, like a balloon filling with air.
Sophia jumped up from his carpet and ran up and down the hallway as fast as his feet could run. Sophia ran into my parents' room and barked loudly, trying to wake up my parents who were sleeping. My parents got up and Sophia quickly led them into my room and called 911. Sophia helped save my life. He has saved my life 3 more times since then and is always at my side. Sophia is seven years old and is very healthy! Sophia is a friend to me in many ways.

At the start of the book, we learn about Pi's childhood in India. His father is a zookeeper and the family live in a house in the zoo. Pi and his brother help their father in the zoo and learn to look after the animals. When Pi is sixteen, his family decide to close the zoo and move to Canada. They sell some of the animals to zoos in North America and the family take the animals with them on a ship to Canada. On the way, there is a terrible storm and the ship sinks. Sadly, Pi's family and the ship's sailors die in the storm. Pi finds himself in a lifeboat with a hyena, zebra, orangutan and a tiger. When he sees the animals, Pi is scared and he jumps into the ocean. Then he remembers there are sharks in the ocean and he climbs back into the lifeboat. One by one, the animals in the lifeboat kill and eat each other, till only Pi and the tiger are left alive. Luckily for Pi, there is some food and water on the lifeboat, but he soon needs to start catching fish. He feeds the fish to the tiger to stop it killing and eating him. He also uses a whistle and his knowledge of animals from the zoo to control the tiger.
Pi and the tiger spend 227 days in the lifeboat. They live through terrible storms and are burnt by the Pacific sun. They are often hungry and ill. Sometimes, Pi is happy and hopeful, but sometimes he feels sad and lonely. Finally, they arrive at the coast of Mexico, but you will have to read the book to find out what happens in the end!
