文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,文章讲述的是作者期待圣诞节礼物,结果在圣诞节这一天收到的礼物恰恰是前一天晚上许愿希望得到的礼物,作者认为这真的是一个奇迹。

3 . A long time ago, I was returning from my friend’s house. My father parked the car in front of our house. We were opening the gate when suddenly we noticed two puppies run onto our lawn.

They were differently coloured — one was brown as a cup of coffee with its tail and ear hair dipped in black while the other puppy was a biscuit colour with the tip of its tail dipped in white and its forehead had a white spot. And that’s why we named them Coffee and Biscuit. Coffee is female and Biscuit is male. In other words they both are twins by a minute. Well, since then they have been with us.

Now here comes the shocking part. Coffee has been with us only for one year and 11 months. Guess why? Coffee will soon be sent away. At this time it is known that dogs have a sense of temper and start biting people that come near them. And so with a lot of arguing I let my parents take Coffee to a farmer’s far away. They tried to assure me that Coffee would have a great time. But Biscuit and I couldn’t stand the pain of losing a friend and a sister.

After a month, the night before Christmas I made my Christmas wish: I wished that Coffee would come back to me on Santa’s sleigh (雪橇). The next morning, I woke up to hear the singing of birds. I jumped out of bed and ran towards the Christmas tree. There were almost 100 presents. We started to open our gifts. In the end there was just one remaining. It was wrapped in a green gift paper and tied with a red ribbon. I opened it up and guessed who jumped out. It was my lost Coffee. She looked absolutely beautiful. My parents explained that she had been scratching the front door last night!

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一头名叫Hope的小象在志愿者的帮助下,重新获得自由的故事。

5 . One night our team was called out to a farm to treat a female elephant who had just miscarried (流产). Arriving after midnight, our team saw a skinny baby elephant which kept hitting his head against the side of a narrow cage (笼子).

The next morning, we moved him to a new home and gave him the name “Hope”. One of the volunteers, Lek, tried hard to make Hope accept milk from her, but he attempted to hurt her many times. Hope kept trumpeting (吼叫) over and over the first three nights. The fourth night he finally fell into a sleep and Lek used this opportunity to get close, patting and comforting him. When he would wake up, she ran from his pen (围栏). She did this every night until Hope accepted her. Then Hope was let out of the pen to take a walk with the volunteers.

Eight months later, Hope’s owner came to take him back. He was to be trained for work. But the owner’s request was refused. The more Hope stayed with us, the more we loved him and we couldn’t let him go back to cruel training and hard work. With the help and kind support from Jody Thomas (USA) and Leonor Gonzo (Australia), Hope won his freedom to stay with us. These kind volunteers became Hope’s foster parents after helping to buy his freedom.

Hope today is happy in his new home at this elephant haven. As his name suggests, he is our Hope and we will see him grow up as a free elephant and let him back to nature one day to be a real king of the jungle.

6 . Creators (创造者) say robot dolphins can swim happily in shopping mall display tanks and be watched closely, which would usually be harmful to real animals. And they could soon be coming to zoos in China.

A robot dolphin that can nod an answer to a child — thanks to the human operating from a distance — might not sound interesting. But as marine (海洋的) parks worldwide face increasing pressure to give up exhibitions with real whales and dolphins, the robot dolphins provide an interesting choice.

“The marine park industry has had a drop in income for over a decade due to the cost of live animals, but the public’s hunger to experience these animals is still as strong as ever,” said Roger Holzberg, former creative director at the Walt Disney Company. “We believe it’s time to reimagine this industry and that this can be kinder and earn more money.”

But with a price of about £20.8 million per dolphin, the biggest trouble to the creators is making sure that the robotic sea animals will be cheaper in the long run than the real thing. Li Wang, a business developer for Edge Innovation, the New Zealand-based company making out a case for the robots, said they did cost four times more than normal dolphins but would last longer.

Mike Wang, vice president at Red Star Macalline Group, said it had started the first step of the dolphins’ development, and was considering founding a “lab” for their business in China.

The prototype (原型) for the dolphin is over 270 kg and can’t be discerned from the real thing — the condition Red Star Macalline required for starting the project. The test audience had been unable to guess the dolphin wasn’t real.

Animal rights advocates (倡导者) also welcomed the change. Elisa Allen, the UK director for People for the Good Treatment of Animals, said she hoped robot dolphins would replace real ones so that people could experience nature without harming them.

1. What do we know about the robot dolphins according to the text?
A.They can find danger.B.They look better than real ones.
C.They work under human control.D.They make automatic replies.
2. What is Roger Holzberg trying to talk about in Paragraph 3?
A.The challenges marine parks are facing.B.The possibility of creating robot dolphins.
C.A way to the problems with sea animals.D.The importance of developing robot dolphins.
3. What does the underlined word “discerned” in the last but one paragraph mean?
A.Recognized.B.Protected.C.Separated.D.Controlled.
4. Why did Elisa Allen support the robot dolphins?
A.It made more money for some organizations.B.It served an environmentally valuable cause.
C.It helped make advances in robot technology.D.It would replace real dolphins in the long run.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了一项关于影响鲸鱼搁浅因素的科学研究。

7 . Researchers don’t know exactly how whales direct their way in the ocean dark depths during their migrations (迁徙), and it’s difficult to study them in action. But recently, scientists discovered that whale strandings (搁浅) in Europe’s North Sea seemed to be related to the solar storms.

“We think the solar activity is wrecking their ability to tell directions,” Jesse Granger said. Imagine whales directing their way using GPS, and the sun closes the GPS in the middle of the trip.

Scientists have recorded whale strandings for decades, and in many cases the whales appeared to be otherwise healthy. If the whales were in good health when they accidentally beached, it’s possible that the issue of telling directions was to blame. Building on past research linking strandings with the solar activity, they studied 31 years of gray whale stranding data and compared it to sunspot data.

The team decided on the gray whales for their research due to their long migration. Gray whales experience one of the longest mammalian (哺乳动物的) migrations. Scientists have recorded one gray whale that covered 22,000 kilometers in six months, for example. The researchers found that whales were 2.3 times more likely to beach on days with lots of sunspots, darker areas on the sun associated with solar storms. This suggests that the whales do probably rely on some sort of sense to guide the way, and that when they receive a certain influence, they get lost, said Granger.

Granger added that it is just a beginning and that they have more work to do to explain the connection between the sun and whale strandings. The sun is just one of the several factors that might confuse whales, and the researchers didn’t include other things such as diseases or water up welling in the ocean itself.

But it’s important work, and if it holds, it might help environmentalists predict when they should deploy (部署) more observers in anticipation of live whale strandings.

1. What is the new discovery about?
A.Why whales move to other parts of the ocean.
B.The solar storms appear in Europe’s North Sea.
C.How whales tell directions in the ocean’s dark depths.
D.Whale strandings have something to do with the solar activity.
2. What does the underlined word “wrecking” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Damaging.B.Adjusting.C.Improving.D.Showing.
3. What is special about gray whales according to Paragraph 4?
A.They respond more actively to the solar activity.
B.They are hard to lose their way in the deep oceans.
C.Their health conditions are better than those of other whales.
D.Their migrations are long enough for researchers to collect data.
4. What can be inferred about whales from Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A.They have a poor sense of direction.B.Their living environment is in great danger.
C.They rely on the sunlight to direct them-selves.D.Their strandings are linked to different factors.

8 . Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.

Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly? On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.

To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.

However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.

Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wildlife treasures in the world.

1. MEP was started to ________.
A.raise more elephants in MaliB.stop the main lake from drying up
C.discover water source for elephantsD.protect the elephants’ living environment
2. What does the word “illegal” in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?

9 . “The noise made by boats of whale watching tourists may be causing communication problems for the animals,” British researchers said last week.

Whale watching is a popular tourist activity in places where groups of killer whales live. Every day, dozens of boats filled with tourists go to watch the beautiful animals. Unfortunately, the engines of the boats make a lot of noise, and that may be causing problems for the whales, according to a report in the US science magazine Nature.

The whales travel in groups, and communicate with each other through sonic calls that some scientists refer to as singing. The sounds of the boat engines may be creating too much background noise for the whales to be able to hear each other.

The researchers listened to recordings of whale calls made between 15 and 25 years ago, before whale watching became popular. These were compared to more recent recordings.

They found that the animals have started to sing for longer than they used to, like a person shouting to a friend across a noisy room.

It is believed that the whales are trying to communicate hunting or breeding information. Scientists said that, if this is prevented, the future of the world’s whale population could be in danger.

“Animals become slow in mind and repeat themselves in noisy areas,” said Volker Deecke, a Canadian biologist. “They have to say things twice or three times in order to be understood.”

The killer whales studied were living off the coast of northwestern America. The number of killer whales in this area has been falling for several years, but scientists are not sure why.

1. The passage mainly tells us ________.
A.the problems of whale watching
B.how killer whales communicate with each other
C.the reduced population of killer whales caused by whale watching
D.hearing problems of the killer whales caused by whale watching
2. Now in a noisy background, the killer whales have to ________.
A.sing in a louder voiceB.sing longerC.travel in smaller groupsD.get nearer to each other
3. Scientists believe that killer whales sing to ________.
A.warn each other of dangersB.keep in the same group
C.send useful informationD.enjoy themselves
4. From the passage, we can feel that the author is ________.
A.angryB.hopefulC.worriedD.disappointed

10 . How to Survive in the Woods

Getting lost in the woods can be a scary situation. Whether you’ve got lost on a hike, your car broke down on a wilderness road, or any other reason, surviving in the woods is difficult.     1     Here are some tips on how to get out of the woods.

Don’t panic. Panicking can cause you to make poor decisions and affect your judgment. If you’re going to get out of the woods, you need to have a clear head.     2

Avoid using too much energy.     3     Try not to sweat or use too much energy by doing things like running around and screaming for help if you’re by yourself. Save as much energy as you can for doing things like building shelter, fire, and searching for water.

4     If you become lost in the woods for whatever reason, people will look for you at your last known location. Trying to find your way out can make you more lost and make it harder for anybody to find you. Stay in one location for a better chance at being rescued.

Signal your location with smoke signals. Build a fire and add a bunch of green leaves or pine needles to create a lot of smoke. Take a large branch with green leaves on it and cover the fire for 3-4 seconds to stop the smoke from escaping.     5     Repeat the process to form a line of clouds of smoke in the sky.

A.Build a shelter.
B.Stay where you are.
C.However, it can be done.
D.Search for a source of fresh water.
E.Take deep breaths and focus on the tasks at hand.
F.It may be difficult for you to find adequate food and water.
G.Then, remove the branch to allow the smoke cloud to escape.
