2 . Ant Forest, a green initiative by the world’s leading payment and lifestyle platform Alipay, received the “U.N. Champions of the Earth” award, the UN’s highest environmental honor. It was given to Ant Forest for motivating half a billion people to adopt an eco-friendly and greener lifestyle, greatly contributing to ecological protection with the help of digital technology.

Alipay achieved this by inspiring its users to do environmentally-friendly things, such as walking, using public transportation, going paperless in the office and more to earn “green energy points”. These points can then be used to water and grow their own virtual young trees. After the virtual young trees have grown up on line, Ant Forest will plant real trees somewhere in China.

The number of Ant Forest users has reached 350 million, reducing 3 million tons of carbon dioxide. “Such programs are quite attractive to me. I feel satisfied to see a real tree planted just by doing some simple things such as riding bicycles and buying tickets online,” said an interviewee.

This initiative of Ant Forest is in line with the Chinese government’s strategy of a “Green Economy”. The country is taking aggressive actions in expanding its green coverage. Now, its efforts are paying off, with improved biodiversity and a healthier economic growth. Rare animal species have been spotted and forest parks are now popular attractions of tourism.

The planet is at a critical point which could result in natural disasters. It seems clear that unless governments, businesses and people form a focused team, it’s difficult to stop global warming. Fortunately, Ant Forest shows that it is possible to make joint efforts while relying on digital technology. And more initiatives are using technology to contribute to a sustainable future of the planet.

1. What was Ant Forest given the award for?
A.It brings convenience to people’s lives.
B.It is run by the world’s leading payment platform.
C.It technically assists many people to protect ecology.
D.It has made the greatest contribution to global development.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How Alipay makes profits.
B.How Ant Forest is carried out.
C.What a low-carbon life is like.
D.Why Alipay takes up the initiative.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A.350 million people have planted real trees.
B.Promoting tourism can help save animals.
C.China keeps a balance between economy and ecology.
D.The expansion of green coverage mainly results from Ant Forest.
4. How does Ant Forest contribute to the sustainable future?
A.By criticizing natural disasters.
B.By stopping the global warming.
C.By providing a platform to make joint efforts.
D.By encouraging people to donate money to plant trees.

4 . Cat behavior can often be puzzling and confusing to humans.     1     Veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren shares her expertise on some common and strange cat behaviors to help you understand why your cat behaves the way it does.

Scratching is a natural behavior for cats. It’s how they make their paws sharper. If cats do not have a suitable surface to scratch, they will choose your furniture or carpet. To protect your furniture, provide at least two scratching posts. These posts need to be stable so they don’t rock or tip over.     2     Cats tend to scratch when they wake in the morning, so place one post close to where they sleep.

Cats love high places, which give them a sense of safety and allow them to watch everything going below.     3     And make sure you have several cat items in front of windows so your cat can look outside. If your cat can watch from high up and see the world outside of his home, he is less likely to climb onto the kitchen cupboard and knock down the bowls.

4     They have the surprising ability to tie themselves in knots without any difficulty. They curl up in unconventional beds, like vases, because they have special bones on the back that allow them to do this. And they take great pride in showing this to you continuously.

If cats eat grass, there are several reasons. They may be seeking the nutrients in the grass have an upset stomach, inducing vomiting (催吐). It is not a problem if your cat enjoys eating ensure it hasn’t been treated with pesticides. Alternatively, offer your cat a pot of clean cat grass to chew, especially indoor cats.     5     If you have any concerns about your cat’s behavior or frequency vomiting, please talk with your vet.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly drinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump (一团) in a puddle (水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.

The night before, a German dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain? I asked myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn’t a dog, or it was, he was too weak to get up.

The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn’t want to go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn’t my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter (流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I tossed (扔) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.

He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn’t move. I thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).

“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He couldn’t swallow but poorly look at me. He was dying!

6 . Animals can move from place to place, but plants cannot. When an animal is under attack,it can run away or fight back.Plants certainly cannot run away, and they lack teeth and claws.    1

Some plants have their own ways to keep animals away. For example, the leaves of the holly plant have sharp spines(刺) that discourage grass-eating animals.Holly leaves on lower branches have more spines than leaves on upper branches.     2

Some plants, such as the oak tree, have thick and hard leaves that make it difficult for the animals to eat. Some grasses may contain a sandy material.     3

Many plants also have chemical defenses.    4     Some plants may fight against an attack by increasing the production of these chemicals. When a worm bites a tobacco leaf, the leaf produces a chemical messenger. This messenger sends to the roots the information to produce more nicotine. The higher levels of nicotine discourage the worm.

5     A certain plant in China, for example, has physically spiny leaves, and each spine contains chemically poisonous venom(毒液).A single experience with this kind of plants will teach an animal to stay away in the future.

A.Animals are good at protecting themselves.
B.Eating such grasses wears down animals’ teeth.
C.Many plants depend on both physical and chemical defenses.
D.Plants have more ways to defend against the enemies than animals.
E.This is because the lower leaves are easier for most animals to reach.
F.Some plants produce chemicals that taste bitter or cause an unpleasant reaction.
G.But plants can defend themselves by using both the physical and chemical means.

7 . An international team has identified two areas in China where the scale of carbon dioxide absorption by new forests has been underestimated. Taken together, these areas account for a little over 35% of China's entire land carbon “sink”, the group says.

The two previously under-appreciated carbon sink areas are centred on China's southwest, in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi; and its northeast, particularly Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces.

These provinces have established a pattern of rapid afforestation of progressively larger regions, with provincial forest areas increasing by between 0.04 million and 0.44 million hectares per year over the past 10 to 15 years.

“Bold scientific statements must be supported by massive amounts of evidence and this is what we have done in this study.” Professor Paul Palmer, a co-author from Edinburgh University told the BBC.

“We have collected together a range of ground-based and satellite data-driven evidence to form a consistent and robust narrative about the Chinese carbon cycle.”

China's increasing leafiness has been evident for some time. Billions of trees have been planted in recent decades, to deal with desertification and soil loss, and to establish vibrant timber and paper industries.

Data from NASA Earth satellites shows that human activity in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting and agriculture. Satellite data (2000—2017) reveal a greening pattern that is strikingly remarkable in China and India and overlaps with croplands world-wide.

China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area.

1. According to the passage, which of the following is true about the two newly-identified areas?
A.They are based on Southeast and Northwest China.
B.Their forests have absorbed over 35% of China’s carbon dioxide.
C.They take up over one third of China’s entire land carbon sink areas.
D.Their forest areas have increased from 0.04 to 0.44 million hectares per year.
2. China has planted more trees in recent decades in order to _________.
A.keep the soil fertileB.set up more factories
C.turn the deserts into green landD.prevent useful land from changing into desert
3. The passage is most probably taken from _________.
A.a science fictionB.a news websiteC.an academic reportD.a travelling brochure
4. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.Carbon Sink Areas in ChinaB.China Aims High in Afforestation
C.China and India Lead the Way in GreeningD.China's Forest Carbon Absorption Underestimated

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I couldn't even sort through the first box of our dog Bama's toys without bursting into tears. My husband, Alan, found me sitting on the floor, holding our dog's favorite toy. He gently pulled me to my feet. "It's okay, Lisa," he said. "I'll put these away. Why don't you go outside and get some air?"

I nodded.

It had been a few months since our beloved Bama had passed away. Alan and I didn't have children. Our boxer (拳师犬) was our baby. After Bama's death, we couldn't bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep. I told myself I'd do it when I was ready. Apparently, I still wasn't.

Now I sat on my front porch (门廊) and sobbed. Friends and family had suggested we get another dog, but Alan and I dismissed the idea. We couldn't go through that kind of heartbreak again.

I gazed out over the yard. Across the street was a dog. A boxer. Was he real or just my wishful imagination? I blinked. The boxer was still there. We locked eyes. He came across the street, straight toward me. Hesitantly, I offered my hand. He sniffed it eagerly then he licked (舔) me. I let out a surprised laugh. He pushed his head into my lap to be petted.

This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. He was well-fed and well-dressed. He wore a collar but had no ID. I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I'd never seen another boxer around. I would have remembered if I had.

"Where did you come from?" I asked the dog, scratching him behind the ears.

He just sat there at ease. He didn't seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit.

"Alan!" I called. "You have to come to see this!"

Alan joined me, and we sat together in surprise for a moment. Then the boxer got up and slowly ran off.

10 . There are as many different types of sleeper as there are animal varieties on the planet. There are dozers, dreamers, nappers and hardcore dead-to-the-worlders.

Dolphins

Dolphins face a bit of a problem as they spend their whole lives in the water, but as mammals they need to breathe oxygen to survive. How do they juggle this when unconscious? Dolphins shut down half of their brain, which rests, while the other half is alert and looking out for any potential dangers. As they do this, the dolphin will lie on the surface of the water in a behaviour known as “logging”.

Elephants

Elephants tend to nod off for a few minutes at a time throughout the day. Elephants only manage about two hours of sleep per day, and that’s not even a concentrated block of shuteye. They tend to nod off for a few minutes at a time throughout the day. Possibly because of this, most of their sleeping is done standing up, with just the occasional recumbent sleep.

Spiders

Of course spiders have to be awkward. Even though animals sleep in a vast array of different ways, all of them, even bacteria, follow a 24 hour cycle, known as a circadian rhythm that is dictated by the rotation of the Earth. But scientists have discovered that certain types of orb-weaving spiders simply don’t bother with this. Their body clocks follow a 17, 18 or 19 hour cycle. Scientists aren’t exactly sure how the spider can even exist with this completely different body clock.

Koalas

One problem with trying to work out a creature’s sleeping habits is the difficulty of identifying what is actual sleep. It’s easier to study captive animals, but they can behave in a completely different manner to their cousins in the wild. Koalas studied in zoos were thought to sleep for up to 22 hours a day, but a more detailed study, looking at animals in the wild too, revealed that they in fact sleep for around 14 hours a day plus a healthy amount of resting on top of that. Their diet of eucalyptus leaves takes a lot of time and energy to digest.

Frogs

Frogs are incredible. They have managed to master practically every environment on the planet, no matter how hot or how cold. They not only use hibernation in winter as a sleep strategy, they also engage in something called estivation, where they reach a dormant state during the summer months to avoid overly hot or dry conditions. Despite all this knowledge, scientists aren’t sure exactly how frogs sleep during the months when they are active.

1. Which animal sleeps the longest hours a day according to the passage?
A.The dolphin.B.The koala.C.The spider.D.The elephant.
2. What is still confusing to scientists?
A.How they can identify what is actual sleep.
B.How dolphins breathe oxygen when sleeping.
C.How spiders can survive a different body clock.
D.How frogs sleep when they are not hibernating or estivating.
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Why animals sleep differently.B.What animals do while sleeping.
C.The extraordinary ways that animals sleep.D.The mystery about different types of sleeper.
