3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I bought Jude as a tiny puppy after my previous dog died in a horrible incident. My heart was just broken and it was only having Jude that brought me back round from that pain. He was a lovely and happy pet.

For the first time in years, our whole family had gone on holiday together. It was only for four days but it meant my dog Jude was going to be looked after by someone outside the family. I was a bit nervous about it. After struggling for several days, I eventually booked him into a home boarding place in Belfast. I was worried about him the moment he was dropped off, because he had never been in kennels before.

The emotions we have gone through in the last few days have been awful. Jude was used to the comforts of a home and he had never been on his own before. Thus, I was worried about him at the bottom of my heart. Then unfortunately, the accident happened.

We went away on Monday, July 11, and he was missing on the 12th after being left in an exercise area. But it was on Thursday that I was told he had gone though I messaged the kennels every day to see how he was.

The moment we got home, we went looking for him but we didn’t know the area. My daughters Karla and Leanne took a tent and camped out to keep looking for Jude and they con-firmed a number of sightings of him. There were leaflet drops, drones put up and ground searches and posters. Social media was flooded with his photo and we got news of lots of sightings which helped. On Sunday night, my grandson Caidon who is nine, his mum Ashleigh and their dog Bonnie, went with us to the location of a reported sighting by a kind man and there Jude was.

文章大意:本文是说明文。密歇根州的农民正遭受着巨大的挑战。Zook希望他们能相互合作,共渡难关。

5 . It has been a hard year for the farmers in Michigan and more attention needs to be paid to their emotional well-being, according to a report written by Jim Zook, director of the Michigan Corn Growers Association.

“Nobody has seen a year that has dealt with so many challenges that we have seen with the weather, the markets, the trade and the politics. All of them together have become a storm,” said Zook.

The farmers have been struggling this year because of volatile (易变的) weather and markets. According to Zook, some corn growers will not be able to go on for another year. He said the Michigan Corn Growers Association was putting together programs to provide emotional support for the farmers. “The biggest thing is that we just want to make sure that the farmers in Michigan will work together through this difficult time,” said Zook.

Zook said planting was delayed in the spring because of the cold and wet weather. “We didn’t get as many acres (英亩) planted as what we had hoped,” said Zook. “And so there were a number of acres that kept idle this year.” Zook said he was hopeful that the snow would melt. If it did, he said the farmers would still be able to harvest the corn. But he said if the snow melted, they then would need low temperatures to freeze the ground so the ground could support the weight of heavy harvesting equipment for the corn.

“The challenge will appear in soybean (大豆) harvest because they are lower to the ground,” said Zook. “And if that snow is up on the bean, they won’t be able to get them.”

1. Which can best describe the situation of the farmers in Michigan?
A.Optimistic.B.Familiar.C.Embarrassing.D.Challenging.
2. What should the farmers in Michigan do according to Zook?
A.Help each other.B.Buy more equipment.
C.Save their expenses.D.Focus on the weather.
3. What does the underlined word “idle” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Hopeful.B.Developing.C.Free of charge.D.Not in use.
4. How did Zook feel about the situation?
A.Interested.B.Curious.C.Worried.D.Angry.

6 . Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings(幼苗)aboard the Tiangong space station and this experiment may offer key insights into how astronauts can grow food to support long—term space missions, experts said on Monday. This experiment is the first to produce the complete life cycle of the plant, which begins with a seed and ends with a mature plant producing new seeds.

The breakthrough was conducted in the Wentian space laboratory, which was launched into orbit on July 24, 2022. Three astronauts were conducting the experiment smoothly and testing the plants according to the plan.

“The rice seedlings are growing very well,” said Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher of the task, adding that the experiment also contained seedlings of a small flowering plant often used by scientists to study mutations(变异). “The astronauts will keep monitoring the plants, and if it is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for further studies,” she noted

The flowering stage is crucial for plant reproductive development. “We want to investigate how microgravity can affect the plant flowering time and whether it is possible to use the microgravity environment to control the related process,” she said.

Since the 1980s, China has been taking seeds of rice and other crops to space to help them mutate and produce higher yields once they were planted on Earth. But growing rice in orbit is a different challenge due to the tough conditions of space such as microgravity and lack of air.

Rice has been a main food for astronauts since the early days of space exploration. Freeze—dried chicken and rice was the menu for the Apollo 11 mission, which carried the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969.

“But if we want to land on and explore Mars, bringing food from Earth is not enough to provide for the astronauts’ long journey and mission in space. We have to find a food source for long term space explorations,” Zheng added.

1. What’s the significance of Chinese recent space rice experiment?
A.It enables human beings to move to another planet.
B.It helps people get a better idea of the human life cycle.
C.It inspires more other countries to do space explorations
D.It makes it possible to carry out long—term space missions
2. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The mutation.B.The experiment.C.The exploration.D.The space mission.
3. Why have crop seeds been brought to space since the last century?
A.To promote genetic changes and increase crop harvest.
B.To figure out how to create an earth—like environment.
C.To study the impact of microgravity on crop growth.
D.To develop new crop species with strong ability to adapt.
4. Where is the text most probably from?
A.A medical report.B.A fashion magazine.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了对人类重要的一种森林——云雾林。

10 . Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans.

These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator(赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive.

These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions.

1. Where can you probably find cloud forests?
A.In North America.B.Far from the equator.
C.In an African country.D.At the foot of mountains.
2. How much rainfall is pulled in by the cloud forests in those areas every year?
A.About 60 cm.B.About 108 cm.
C.About 180 cm.D.About 300 cm.
3. What will be discussed in the following part of the text?
A.Ways to protect cloud forests.B.Goals of cloud forest protectors.
C.Difficulties in planting new trees.D.Successes of getting wide support.
4. Where can we probably find the text?
A.In a storybook.B.In a travel guide.
