文章大意:这是一篇应用文,文章介绍了几个绿色旅行目的地。

1 . If your family loves to travel but you worry about the environmental, social and economic effect, it’s time to take a more sustainable approach to your trips.

Wales

Wales packs many sustainable activities for kids. Camp in one of many green campsites around Pembrokeshire, where children can have fun learning about sustainable living. Or find an environmentally friendly campsite at The Greener Camping Club. Don’t forget to factor in a spin on the world’s only people-powered rollercoaster in Snowdonia.

Volcán Tenorio Area

When you think about taking your kids to Costa Rica, you normally focus on viewing its incredible wildlife. But what about giving back to the human residents too? One way to support local communities and understand the Tico culture is by staying on a farm, and there are loads of lovely options around Volcán Tenorio.

Austria

Explore the kid-friendly Austrian capital of Vienna, which offers more organic farmland than any other city and has both “Green Taxis” and plenty of bike-share stations. The city has some fantastic museums for children and the splendid Schloss Schonbrunn where kids can dress up.

San Francisco

San Francisco is perfect for a break that will both delight the kids and satisfy your sustainability principles. The city has banned plastic bags and bottles for years. Plus, most of the fun things to do with kids can be accessed without using a car and many involve green spaces.

Head to the Exploratorium: an incredible hands-on science museum in a solar-powered building.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述为了成为希腊第一个无碳旅游地,Astypalea采取的措施及其存在的问题。

2 . Astypalea, a butterfly-shaped island in the central Aegean, hopes to become Greece’s first carbon-free tourist destination. Under a deal with the government, Volkswagen, a carmaker, has donated several new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea’s public services; it will sell others at cost price to its 1,200 residents. In return, the government has largely increased subsidies (补贴) for the islanders to buy electric cars and will build a hybrid solar and wind power plant to replace those polluting generators.

Unlike other nearby islands, Astypalea is not connected to Greece’s electricity system. With only 3, 000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats, tourism is still low-key. Many residents make a living the old-fashioned way: raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. The island was selected for Volkswagen’s e-mobility experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor, contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rough roads.

Most islanders sound enthusiastic about the project. Mr Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to fall by a third over the next five years. Its residents, he says, will get around on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which will be free, linked to a mobile-phone app and available round the clock.

Some observers detect a bit of green washing. Building a solar park that would generate the island’s electricity will not get started before the tourist season ends. A single wind turbine (涡轮) will not be fixed before 2026 even if the licensing process goes smoothly. On the other hand, the islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is destroyed by a turbine 200 metres high. And even then, the hybrid power unit is planned to cover only about 80% of summer demand. But it is a start.

1. What common measure do Volkswagen and the government take?
A.Offering financial support.B.Developing a mobile-phone app.
C.Making electric cars.D.Establishing a power plant.
2. Which promotes Astypalea’s being selected for the experiment?
A.Tourism prospect and heavy traffic.B.Location and government’s efforts.
C.Islanders’ demand and road conditions.D.Islanders’ lifestyle and large population.
3. What is the major concern of the islanders if a wind turbine is fixed?
A.The complex licensing process.B.Environmental damage.
C.Loss of tourists.D.The influence on their daily life.
4. What can be inferred from the text?
A.The experiment will come to nothing.
B.There are barriers in conducting the project.
C.Green tourism will become a trend in Greece.
D.The islanders are unwilling to change their lifestyle.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。面对全球气候变化,要完成2050年实现零碳排放这一目标需要全球的共同努力,英国政府一直很努力,出台了多个计划,作者呼吁只有世界各国携手应对气候变化,净零目标才有意义。

4 . We are all aware of the effect greenhouse gas emissions are having on our planet and the efforts needed to fight climate change. Most of us are doing our bit to reduce our impact on the environment, but despite our collective effort, are we doing enough to achieve net zero by 2050?

Net zero means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Many countries are doing their bit by changing how they generate and use power, therefore, cutting carbon dioxide output. And they announced what further steps they were going to take at the recent COP26 summit in Glasgow.

In the UK, the government has been setting out its plans to achieve net zero by 2050. It’s recently announced an end date for the sale of gas boilers, which are used for heating homes. The idea is to replace them with heat pumps. It’s offering homeowners money of up to £5,000 to get them in place. Another initiative in the UK is a big push towards electric vehicles. There are to be financial incentives (激励措施) for car makers, and more charging points are to be fitted in streets. And there’s to be a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

But not all emissions can be reduced to zero, so those remaining will have to do something to pay for being in existence. One way to do this is to plant thousands of trees, which are good at absorbing carbon dioxide. The UK government has promised to plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year by 2025. There are other ideas too, but what’s certain is this will cost money. The CBI’s Tom Thackray told the BBC that “those costs have to be weighed up against the cost of inaction.”

Whether the UK, or anyone else, reaches net zero remains to be seen. And there’s some doubt about how this can be accurately measured anyway. But it’s generally recognized that a global effort is needed to deal with climate change. Therefore, net zero targets only make sense if every other country is moving in the same direction.

1. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A.Net zero greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved by 2050.
B.Climate change is closely related to greenhouse gas emissions.
C.We are doing what we can to reduce our impact on the environment.
D.Countries should work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Which of the following is helpful in cutting carbon dioxide output?
A.Coal-fired power.B.Gas heating.
C.Electric cars.D.Petrol vehicles.
3. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.Plans made by the UK to cut down greenhouse gas emission.
B.Big contributors emitting greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.
C.Measures to be taken to ban the use of fossil fuel in some industries.
D.Incentives to encourage industries to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
4. What’s the author’s intention of writing the passage?
A.To demonstrate how important and urgent it is to fight against climate change.
B.To introduce what the UK is doing to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emission.
C.To tell the difficulties to reach the set target of net zero greenhouse gas emission.
D.To call on countries in the world to work together to fight against climate change.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要介绍的是Gayle Bennett创始在线复古商店Soul and Flare的背景。

5 . Gayle Bennett is the founder of online vintage (古董衫) shop Soul and Flare. One of the biggest aims of her company is to get rid of fashion waste by encouraging others to shop vintage and look after the clothes they already own.

Some of the vintage clothes have been worn on and off for up to 70 years-something of a miracle and testament (证明) to their quality as well as how they’re looked after, she says.

For some, buying vintage is a new experience, but Bennett has been learning her trade for a long time. She really knows what she’s talking about.

“I’ve been running Soul and Flare for around five years but have been in the vintage trade for more than a decade. I fell into it in many ways but, growing up, my mom would drag us around charity shops and car boot sales (后备箱集市). In her own way,she was sustainable even if she didn’t know what the word meant then. When I left college, I got a job at a vintage clothing shop. That’s when I started witnessing the vast amounts of clothing wasted in the UK, and my passion for reviving, repairing and making clothing last began.

“In the past, charity shops were there to help poor families, so you didn’t want to go there. But now people love going to charity shops,”Bennett says. The joy of going to charity shops is in the looking. “Around 90 percent of the time you’re going to be wearing something unique.” And that’s something every fashionist wants whether they’re wearing it to a wedding, or for a Zoom party.

1. What was Bennett’s purpose of establishing Soul and Flare?
A.To make fashion sustainable.B.To lead the fashion trend.
C.To promote worn-out clothing.D.To improve people’s fashion sense.
2. What do we know about the vintage clothes from Soul and Flare?
A.They are expensive.B.They’re of low quality.
C.They are well preserved.D.They are from charity shops.
3. What inspired Bennett to start her business?
A.Her mother’s encouragement.B.Her familiarity with the trade.
C.Her love for fashion design.D.Her knowledge of fashion waste.
4. Why do people love charity shops now according to Bennett?
A.They can save a lot of money.B.They’re influenced by fashionists.
C.They want to give to charity.D.They can get something special there.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一个名为Chip Bag Project的公益项目,通过回收空薯片袋,为无家可归者制作睡袋,既保护了环境,又减少了贫困。

6 . Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution for two of the country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.

Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use liners (活衬里) from old coats to line the insides.

It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and portable,” Oleita told the Detroit News.

Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and it created 110 sleeping bags last December.

Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life — and her fellow volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.

And, of course, there’s the symbolism of saving bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty are often closely related. As Oleita told hourdetroit.com: “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”

1. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The final goal of Chip Bag Project.B.The basic rules of Chip Bag Project.
C.The main work of Chip Bag Project.D.The significance of Chip Bag Project.
2. What do we know about the sleeping bag made by Chip Bag Project?
A.Its size is adjustable.B.It is easy to carry around.
C.It has the function of heating.D.It is only made of old coats.
3. Which of the following statements does Oleita probably agree with?
A.Making sleeping bags is easier than buying new ones.
B.Poverty and environmental problems go hand in hand.
C.Making sleeping bags is the best way to help the homeless.
D.Environmental problems have little impact on the homeless.
4. Which of the following best describes Oleita?
A.Caring and creative.B.Brave and optimistic.C.Honest and determined.D.Talented and easy-going.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了英国计划最早于2032年开始禁止销售新的汽油、柴油或混合动力汽车以及社会相关反应。

8 . The UK’s planned ban on sales of new petrol, diesel (柴油) or hybrid (混合动力) cars could start as early as 2032, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said. Last week, the government raised industry concern after bringing the date forward from 2040 to 2035 in order to hit zero-carbon emission targets. But Mr. Shapps told BBC Radio 5 live it would happen by 2035, “or even 2032,” adding there would be consultation.

The main car trade body had previously said the 2035 figure was “concerning”.

The government is setting out its proposals in a United Nations climate summit in November. A Department for Transport spokesperson said, “We are consulting on a range of possible dates to bring forward the end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars.”

“The proposal for this is 2035 — or earlier if a faster transition appears reasonable — as well as including hybrids for the first time.” The UK has set a target of emitting zero carbon by 2050. Experts warned that the original target date of 2040 would still leave old conventional cars on the roads 10 years later. Once the ban comes into effect, only electric cars will be available. Hybrid vehicles are now included in the proposals, which were originally announced in July 2017.

Despite this, Royal Automobile club spokesman Simon Williams said, “While the government appears to be constantly moving forward for ending the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles, drivers should not be worried about choosing a hybrid car now.” “They are potentially the perfect stepping stone for those who want to go electric but have concerns about range (续航), as they aren’t as expensive as a battery electric vehicle. At the moment, they give drivers the best of both worlds.”

How attached are British people to their petrol vehicles? How long until conventional cars go the way of steam engine cars and horse coaches?

1. What is the car industry's attitude towards the ban on the sale of conventional cars?
A.Ambiguous.B.Indifferent.C.Worried.D.Approving.
2. Why does the UK propose to ban the sale of conventional cars before 2040?
A.To remove the concern of main car trade body.
B.To hold back the development of pure battery electric cars.
C.To hold a United Nations climate summit in November.
D.To meet the zero carbon emission target as planned.
3. What is Simon's opinion when people face the ban of conventional cars?
A.It's still a wise choice to choose a hybrid car nowadays.
B.Battery electric cars should be widely used immediately.
C.Drivers should consider about range when choosing a car.
D.People should abandon petrol vehicles as soon as possible.
4. What can we infer about the conventional cars from the last paragraph?
A.They will fall out of use some day.B.They are as important as horse coaches.
C.They will remain as a family necessity.D.They may increase your daily expenses.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述电子垃圾的增加及电子垃圾的危害。

10 . Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, consists of a discarded phones, printers, TVs, electric toothbrushes and many other electronic goods no longer in use.

A shocking 53. 6 million tons of electronic waste was generated worldwide in 2019 — less than a fifth of which was recycled, according to UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2020 report.

Of the total e-waste last year, Asia contributed the biggest amount — 46.4 per cent — followed by the Americas(24.4 percent), Europe (22.3 percent), Africa (5.4 percent) and Oceania (1.3 percent).

The combined heap of e-waste for 2019 averaged 7. 3 kg for every man, woman and child on Earth. The UK averaged the second-biggest in the world, at 23.9 kg, behind Norway, which averaged 26kg.

The report also reveals that just 17.4 percent of the e-waste was properly collected and recycled. E-waste is a health and environmental hazard (危害), containing hazardous substances such as mercury, which damages the human brain.

After a device is discarded and e-waste is warmed up, toxic chemicals are released into the air, damaging the atmosphere. E-waste in landfills can also seep (渗透) toxic materials into groundwater, affecting animals and plants.

Gold, silver, copper, and other high-value materials were collectively valued at $57 billion. However, they were mostly dumped or burned rather than being collected for treatment and reuse. In countries with developing markets, an increasing number of household electronics like refrigerators, air conditioners, and lamps are now being bought, leading to the rapid increase in e-waste. A global obsession with smart phones, which tend to be replaced by an updated model after a year, also helps build e-waste piles.

It's not that countries don't have policies to fight e-waste since 2014, the number of countries that have adopted a national e-waste policy has increased from 61 to 78, the report says. But advances are slow, enforcement (执行) is poor, and policies fail to encourage the collection and proper management of e-waste. The lack of effective policies around the world needs to be addressed (解决) as soon as possible.

1. According to official figures, how much e-waste was recycled in 2019?
A.53.6 million tons.B.10.8 million tons.
C.9.3 million tons.D.20.1 million tons.
2. E-waste does harm in many aspects EXCEPT ________________.
A.health conditionB.electronic products
C.energy resourcesD.environmental protection
3. What's the attitude toward reducing e-waste according to the report?
A.Tolerant.B.Indifferent.C.Ambiguous.D.Critical.
4. What's the main idea of this text?
A.E-waste is increasing.B.E-waste is being reduced.
C.E-waste is harmful to people.D.E-waste is being encouraged.
