文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了回收利用的优点和环保性,倡导大家进行回收利用,保护环境。

1 . Recycling is a way to take rubbish and turn it into new products. It’s helpful to our environment. There are a number of different recycling steps that allow materials to be used more than once.

All kinds of materials can be recycled. Some of the most common things in use today include recycling plastic, glass, metals and paper. Things made of these materials include soda cans, plastic milk boxes, newspapers, computers and cardboard boxes.

There are a number of advantages for recycling. These include: Landfills—Recycling materials means less rubbish and saves space in landfills. Resources—When we use materials again, this means we can take fewer resources from the earth. Pollution—in general, recycling materials can produce less pollution, helping to keep our environment clean.

Be sure to recycle everything you can in your house and school. There is almost a “recycle” rubbish can around. Be sure to drop your used aluminum (铝) cans and plastic bottles there. At home, be sure to put paper things like the newspapers, paper boxes, and homework pages into the recycling box.

Plastics are usually marked with an identification code that shows a recycling symbol and a number from 1 to 7. This shows that the type of chemicals or materials is used in making the plastic. Used paper can be recycled around seven times.

It is high time we set up a recycling station in every street, across the city and the country, so the cleaners can transport the rubbish smoothly. This is the only way out for handling rubbish without causing danger to the environment and our health. For ourselves, our children and our children’s children, let’s take action NOW!

4. The underlined word “handling” in the last paragraph means ________.

2 . Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has expressed regret over his handling of the bushfire crisis damaging the country. The PM has faced mounting criticism over his government’s response to the bushfires and its climate policy.

Since September, bushfires have killed at least 28 people and destroyed thousands of homes. Mr Morrison’s government has been accused of not doing enough to address climate change, which experts say could increase the intensity, frequency and scale of bushfires.

But in the interview, the PM defended his government’s approach, which he said took into account the effect of climate change on the bushfires.

Each year there is a fire season during the Australian summer, with hot, dry weather making it easy for blazes (火焰) to start and spread. Natural causes are to blame most of the time, like lightning strikes in drought-affected forests. Humans can also be to blame. NSW police have charged at least 24 people with deliberately starting bushfires, and have taken legal action against 183 people for fire-related offenses since November, according to a police statement.

Bushfire conditions eased on Saturday, giving firefighters a temporary short break in areas where blazes are still raging. But authorities have warned that the huge fires, spurred by high temperatures, wind and a three-year drought, will persist until there is substantial rainfall.

About half a billion animals have been affected by the fires across NSW, with millions likely dead. The figures for NSW include birds, reptiles, and mammals, except bats. It also excludes insects and frogs, so the real sum is almost certain to be higher, the ecologists said. Almost a third of koalas in NSW may have been killed in the fires, and a third of their habitat has been destroyed, said Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley.

1. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?
A.The bushfires cause little damage to people’s life in Australia.
B.The PM criticized that his government didn’t take appropriate methods.
C.The PM took active measures to deal with the bushfires damaging the country.
D.Experts say the government’s inadequate action could worsen the bushfires.
2. Which factor has made the huge fires more serious according to authorities?
A.wet weatherB.lightning strike
C.long-lasting droughtD.heavy rainfall
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.More animals have been affected than the number shows.
B.a billion animals face extinction due to the fires.
C.Koalas are in an immediate danger of dying out.
D.The huge fires have no influence on insects and frogs.
4. Where is the passage probably from?
A.A sci-fi book.B.A news website.
C.A fashion magazine.D.A travel journal.

4 . The maleo, a bird with black feathers and a pink chest, is native to Indonesia’s Sulawesi island and a few neighboring ones. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IU-CN), which identifies wildlife across the world currently facing threats, estimates only 800 to 1,400 adult maleos remain in the wild. Experts do not know how many maleos still live across West Sulawesi island. They were only able to record the presence of nesting grounds in 23 villages based on reports from locals in the area. But of those, only 18 are considered active nesting areas.

Recently, the birds have been faced with new threats, which accelerate their decline. The Indonesian government plans to move the nation’s capital from Jakarta to a new city on Borneo island, which is just a six-hour boat trip apart from Sulawesi island. The island takes on the building of new roads and seaports to be used to transport materials to the new capital. Activities also include tree clearing, digging, and removing stones. The process already has changed the forest environment on West Sulawesi and is harming maleo nesting areas near the beach. These changes have made the trip for maleos to lay their eggs increasingly difficult.

Another problem has been poachers. The Associated Press reports that, regardless of official ban, they steal maleo eggs that the males’ parents have hidden in the sand, and sell the eggs for about $1 to people as food. The eggs are a traditional gift for many people in Mamu-ju and other parts of Sulawesi.

“As far as I know, maleo birds are in decline,” said Andi Aco Takdir, chief of the West Sulawesi Forestry Agency. He pointed to several reasons for the decline, including destruction of beach areas, and expanding human development activities. He added that government officials there are prepared to take steps to protect the maleos even with the new capital development. Andi said, “Nature must be used as an achievement and must not be built leaving be-hind problems.”

1. What do the numbers in the first paragraph suggest?
A.The maleos are popular with locals.B.The maleos are in need of protection.
C.The maleos are adaptable to the climate.D.The maleos are neglected by natives.
2. What causes a further drop of the maleo population?
A.The shortage of food.B.The damage of wildlife.
C.The development of Sulawesi island.D.The supporting work for the new capital.
3. Why do some people steal male o eggs?
A.To earn money.B.To make gifts.C.To have fun.D.To follow blindly.
4. What can we infer from Andi’s words?
A.The new capital development might be stopped at once.
B.The government will balance conservation and development.
C.There seems to be a tough way for the new capital to develop.
D.The government will concentrate on solving urban problems.

7 . It took me a moment to realize what had happened. Three days had passed and Rita seemed to get weaker and weaker. The rain had stopped. However, the sky was still cloudy, and it was so dark that I couldn’t see the buildings even across the road. I took a pressure reading from the weather station: 947mb, which let me know exactly where I was—in the eye of the storm.

There were rains and winds still, but not oppressive (难以忍受的)anymore. There was still no power, hot water or food. Besides, I didn’t sleep well for all these days, but I felt more relaxed since the weather report said Rita was leaving. What’s more, I was luckier than those people who had lost their homes or even worse, lost their lives because of Rita.

As I travelled further to the west, going after the storm, the damage along the way became less severe. I arrived in Houston after a tricky journey with my fuel supplies almost all gone. However, I came across another storm chaser (追逐者) who had 45 gallons of petrol. He helped me and we shared our working experience these days. With a complete stroke of luck I found a run-down hotel that allowed me to have a room overnight before the midnight. Although there was no running water, no power and no air conditioning, I curled up into a corner and fell asleep quickly.

I woke up the next morning, and what a change! The sky was blue and cars were moving around. Sirens could be heard as convoys (护航队) of emergency managements started to head west towards where I had come from. "The storm had stopped and I could go home. I gave all my remaining supplies to other people at the hotel and headed towards the airport. Houston Airport was not damaged, so I took my flight and drank my first hot drink in four days.

All in all, when I came back home, I was proud that I finally made it again to follow and record the storm and I really learned a lot these days. Although it’s dangerous, I love my job as not many people would go into the eye of an intense storm.

1. We can know from the passage that “Rita” is ________.
A.a pet
B.a storm
C.a friend of the author
D.a citizen in Houston
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The author was a storm chaser.
B.The storm lasted for at least a week.
C.The author didn’t like Houston at all.
D.Houston was very badly damaged by the storm.
3. How did the author probably feel after the storm?
A.Anxious.
B.Disappointed.
C.Satisfied.
D.Scared.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Ways to survive in a storm.
B.The weather changes in Houston.
C.The author’s experience in the storm.
D.Damages caused by the storm in Houston.
