1 . More than a million tons a year of America's plastic rubbish are not ending up where they should. As many as 1, 300 plastic grocery bags per person is landing in places such as oceans and roadways, according to a new study of U. S.

In 2016, the United States generated 46.3 million tons of plastic waste, by far the most in the world. Between2.7% and 5. 3% of that was mismanaged, according to a study in Friday's journal Science Advances. “If you took nearly 2. 5 million tons of mismanaged plastic waste and dumped it on the White House lawn, it would pile as high as the Empire State Building,” said Jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineering professor.

Previous studies hadn't put the United States among the 10 worst offending nations for plastic waste in oceans. That's because the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency only tracks what goes into official parts of the waste stream such as landfills (废物填埋场) and recycling centers.

“The new study provides a more realistic view of our mismanaged waste,” said University of Toronto ecology professor Chelsea Rochman, who wasn't part of the study. “We consume a lot of plastic which then becomes plastic waste. We recycle very little of this material, which is a waste of resources.”

“A large but hard to quantify part of the problem involves the 51% of U. S. plastic waste shipped abroad for recycling to countries that routinely mismanage waste," Law said. The situation has been converting since many countries have become more limiting about taking U. S. rubbish imports. American exports of plastic waste have declined dramatically since their peak in 2016.

The government is spending billions of dollars trying to fix the problem, with modernized recycling technology and new business models to reduce waste while urging compulsory recycled content standards for new products and packaging.

“The best thing you can do environmentally is to produce no waste at all,” Jambeck said.

1. What can we know about the plastic waste in America?
A.It is improperly dealt with.B.It is increasing every year.
C.It is as high as a tall building.D.It is finding its way into landfills.
2. What did former studies fail to focus on?
A.How plastic waste is managed officially.B.Why all plastic waste isn't recycled.
C.When plastic waste reaches its peak.D.Where all plastic waste finally ends up.
3. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “converting” in paragraph 5?
A.continuingB.changingC.existingD.affecting
4. What problem might America face concerning plastic waste?
A.The lack of capital for waste management.B.The lack of modern technology.
C.The limit of waste exports.D.The seriousness of waste.

3 . In an effort to fight the “throw-away culture” and promote reuse and repair, the city of Berlin has taken the unique step of opening its own secondhand department store.

This isn’t your grandma’s thrift shop (旧货商店). It resells perfectly good items that would otherwise be thrown away. A pun on the German words for “department store” and “conserving house”, B-Wa(h)renhaus sells a wide variety of products. Far from simply selling old items, the electronic goods have been fixed by expert technicians and come with a year’s guarantee. And, to reach more secondhand shoppers, the store was set up right in the middle of the famous Karstadt department store.

With the success of its initial six-month trial run, the city plans to open four more similar operations in other parts of Berlin. By 2030, it hopes to have at least one location in each of Berlin’s 12 districts. Since 2008, city policies and educational campaigns have reduced average annual household waste by about 25 pounds per resident. It also recycles about 49% of its mineral construction waste. Currently, the city estimates that 8% of abandoned electronic goods and 6% of huge items thrown away can actually be reused. The goal is to expand the market for these items beyond the usual bargain hunters and eco-conscious consumers.

“Three years ago, we started collecting all kinds of used goods,” city spokesperson Dorothee Winden said. “There are lots of things that are well-preserved and functioning but aren’t being used anymore. The goal is to give these things a new life with somebody who can use them.” The store also includes an education center to encourage more sustainable lifestyles — and also gave an award to a project that recycles school uniforms, so that parents don’t have to buy new ones every year.

1. Why has Berlin opened its own secondhand department store?
A.To attract more shoppers.B.To promote recycling.
C.To foster traditional culture.D.To expand secondhand market.
2. In which aspect is B-Wa(h)renhaus different from the traditional thrift store?
A.The variety of the goods. B.The location of the store.
C.The quality of the products.D.The operation of the store.
3. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Berlin currently has 4 second-hand stores in construction.
B.Berlin has been successful in cutting its waste since 2008.
C.It is not easy to make the goal to expand the market a reality.
D.It is estimated that Berlin will be a zero-waste city by 2030.
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce Berlin’s new reuse shop operation.
B.To raise people’s awareness of reasonable shopping.
C.To persuade people to become eco-friendly shoppers.
D.To encourage more people to donate to secondhand shops.

4 . After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.

Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.

Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing (不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts (爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

5 . Tips for Green Travel with Kids

Traveling doesn’t mean letting go of all the eco-friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life. Here are a few tips for green travel with kids:

Booking nonstop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions (碳排放). If the closest local airport doesn’t have nonstop flights to a certain place, check in with other local airports to see if nonstop flights are available.    1

Whether you’re flying or driving, it’s easy when traveling to pull into fast food restaurants for snacks.    2    My kids love to help plan snacks. I let them create their own snacks for the trip at home.

Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along whenever you travel. At the airport, keep your reusable bottles empty until you have passed through the security (安检).    3    Single-use plastic water bottles create unnecessary waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health.

4    Open a few windows and turn off the air conditioner. You should also help your children keep their good, green habits from home to place while traveling. Sometimes vacation can mean more than one shower each day — once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention to the number of showers and the length of showers.    5

A.Too much carbon emissions seriously pollute the environment.
B.But you can pack healthy food before starting off.
C.In this way, you can save water and energy.
D.Fill them up on the other side of the security checkpoint.
E.Security check is a necessary part of each trip.
F.Save energy by turning off the hotel room lights when you head out for the day.
G.You might have to drive a bit further, but saving on carbon emissions makes it worthwhile.

6 . Does anything symbolize the throwaway culture better than coffee chains? Everyone is piled high with by-products of a culture which in the past 10 years has gone from thinking that a cup of coffee is best enjoyed sitting down, in a break from a busy day, to one where if you’re not constantly rushing, you may get to work to find your desk gone. Gone are the thick white mugs, washed and reused until they broke. Instead, we’ve a vast new industry of disposables (一次性用品) for coffee on the go.

Cosla Coffee alone uses more than 100 million disposable coffee cups a year. Add to that Starbucks, Caffe Nero and other coffee shops; and you get something approaching 500 million paper cups and a billion napkins, plus plastic knives, spoons and sandwich boxes to get rid of, just in the UK, every year.

There are no regulations determining what materials they use or how they dispose of any of it. So they do what they like, which turns out to vary wildly. One reason may be that three different government departments are in charge of waste management. Communities Secretary is responsible for local rubbish collection, Environment Secretary for waste policy, and Energy and Climate Change Secretary the aspect of, well, dealing with climate change. When I1 asked the major chains about their recycling policies, Starbucks said, “We’re aiming to make our cups recyclable in the near future.” Its salad containers are biodegradable (可生物降解的) and its sandwich containers, being a sandwich themselves of paper and film, are only recyclable once they’re torn apart. However, you don’t see many people doing that.

Costa’s cardboard cups can’t be recycled, because although the cardboard is recyclable, the ink and the glue aren’t. So it’s planning to use vegetable ink and degradable glue on its cups.

1. Why does the author compare the old days with today in the beginning?
A.To present a busy day.B.To recall the sweet past.
C.To introduce the main topic.D.To show the symbol of a culture.
2. The underlined word “mugs” in paragraph 1 can be best replaced by_______.
A.bowlsB.bags
C.chopsticksD.cups
3. What can we learn about recycling?
A.The problem of wasting has been under control.
B.There are clear rules about materials disposables use.
C.The sandwich containers of Starbucks can be recyclable.
D.Communities Secretary is responsible for local rubbish recycle.
4. What can be served as the best title of the passage?
A.The Culture of WesternersB.The Future of Coffee Chains
C.The Change of Mankind’s LifestyleD.The Environment Cost of Takeaway Coffee

7 . Each year, about 7 million tons of trash (垃圾) is found in the ocean. This trash consists of cigarette ends, medical waste, plastic, mile-long nets, etc... Those items of trash choke (窒息) many species of ocean life so quickly that they eventually become extinct. Ocean pollution harms the earth and animals, and we should stop the problem.

Some other causes of ocean pollution are waste, poisonous chemicals, and the biggest cause is littering (乱丢垃圾). How do these items end up in the ocean? Waste flows through rivers and drains (下水道) directly to the ocean, so ocean pollution continues to step up. The estimated amount of ocean pollution that floated in the sea in 2012 was 288 million tons. This huge number continues to increase by 4% each year. That means 11, 520, 000 tons of trash increase each year. Imagine the future of our ocean. Will there be any room to swim? Also 80% of the ocean is composed of plastic: plastic bottles, plastic bags, and some plastic toys.

How can ocean pollution be solved? Use fabric bags instead of plastic bags. This would reduce the plastic pollution in the ocean. Also for the waste water problem, we could use waste water treatment system. Lastly using renewable energy sources such as wind power or solar power would limit offshore drilling.

If we don’t stop the causes of ocean pollution, water temperatures will continue to rise and ocean life will become endangered. Please be mindful that what we do affects the people around us, the animals around us, and the habitats around us. So will you pay attention to this problem or wait for the next generation to?

1. What leads to the ocean pollution worst?
A.Cigarette ends.B.Littering.
C.Medical waste.D.Plastic.
2. How many ways are mentioned to solve the problem in Paragraph 3?
A.3B.4
C.5D.6

4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Seriousness of Ocean Pollution
B.The Solutions to Ocean Pollution
C.The Causes of Ocean Pollution
D.The Sorts of Ocean Pollution

9 . My sister Alice and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette (香烟) butts (烟头) for seven years. One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it “No Butts About It”.

At first, we drew pictures with “The Earth is not your ashtray (烟灰缸)” written on them. We put the pictures around our hometown—in parks, by beaches, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts hurts the environment. Most smokers don’t think that dropping butts hurts the Earth. But it does, and all rubbish does!

Later, we wrote to companies and asked them for money to help us. We used the money to buy ashtrays to give to smokers. We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them so they didn’t have to drop butts.

At the moment, we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes. Some companies want to do it. Many people have started to join our group since it began. Today there are 45 other “No Butts About It” groups in America.

Now there even groups in England, Australia, and India! Many newspapers have written about my sister and me over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for what we do. But we are not interested in prizes. We just want to make the Earth a better and cleaner place for animals, plants and people.

One day, it will be.
