4 . When most of us think of sand, we immediately think of sunny beaches and summer holidays. But actually it’s in pretty much everything that surrounds us in our everyday lives. From the walls of our homes to the glass bottles in our kitchens and even the mobile phones in our hands. Sand is the second most used resource in the world after water: it accounts for more than two-thirds of everything that’s being dug out of the ground. But there isn’t a limitless supply. In fact, a UN report says we might be running out.

According to the report, we use an estimated 15 billion tons of sand every year in the construction industry alone. That’s enough to build a 20m × 20m wall around the equator every year. However, sand can take tens of thousands of years to form: the process starts with rock being eroded(侵蚀) in the mountains and ends, eventually, with sand being in river beds and on the seafloor.

Sand is heavy and difficult to transport, so in developing countries, sand is often mined from the nearest convenient source, and quite often that means a river bed or beach. But beaches and rivers are delicately balanced ecosystems and when a large amount of sand is removed, the balance is upset. The smallest fish, which eat organic matter on the sand in river beds, from the base of the food chain in a river. If this sand is removed, so is the source of food for the bottom feeders. All organisms in a food chain share the joys and the sorrows. Thus, when they disappear, so does the food for the larger fish which would have been caught and eaten, or sold by fishermen.

It is high time we took into consideration the big problem concerning the tiny thing. More and more conservationists are calling for alternatives to sand especially in the construction industry.

1. Why are the things in our daily life mentioned in the beginning?
A.To show the uses of sand.B.To indicate our relationship with nature.
C.To introduce our lifestyles.D.To stress the convenience of modern life.
2. What does the UN report imply?
A.Sand is actually our most used natural resource.
B.Sand is used more quickly than it’s formed.
C.The construction industry doesn’t use sand wisely.
D.The problem of washing sand is worsening.
3. What does the underlined phrase “the bottom feeders” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The river beds.B.The fishermen.

9 . The UK government has promised to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions (排放) by at least 68% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, marking a significant increase from its current goal.

The new goal comes nine days ahead of the UK hosting a“climate action summit (峰会)”to encourage other countries to declare tougher climate plans, known as Nationally Deter-mined Contributions (NDCs), under the Paris Agreement. Current NDCs will raise temperatures by 3℃. And stronger plans are needed to meet the Paris deal's goal of limiting global warming to 1. 5℃.

"This is the most significant NDCs announcement so far from any major economy," said Richard Black at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, a UK-based think tank, in a statement.

The new goal is exactly in line with what the government's official climate adviser, the Climate Change Committee, called for in a letter published earlier today. The group said 68% would be "“world-leading" compared with existing plans of governments.

The UK had previously promised a 53% cut in emissions as part of a joint (共同的) effort with the rest of the European Union, but the UK is determined to produce a new NDCs. Separately, the UK had also promised a 57% cut by 2032 domestically.

It is clear that far more action will be needed if the UK is to meet the new goal. The government's own analysis last week showed that recent major methods, such as banning newoil-fueled car sales by 2030,had failed to do enough to put the UK on track even for the old goal of 57% by 2032. The new goal obviously widens that gap further.

1. Why did the UK declare its new goal before “climate action summit”?
A.To show its former plans are based on facts.
B.To blame other countries for their low goals.
C.To call on other countries to take bigger steps.
D.To take the lead in controlling greenhouse gas emissions.
2. What is the UK’s new goal for reducing emissions?
A.15%.B.68%.C.57%.D.53%.
3. What's the author s attitude to the UK's new goal?
A.Disapproval.B.Doubtful.C.Unconcerned.D.Subjective.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A new goal will be put forward on“climate action summit"
B.UK came up with a common goal under the Paris Agreement
C.UK's recent major policies are far from its predetermined goal
D.UK sets an ambitious climate goal of 68% emissions cut by 2030

10 . E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.

1     It is often cheaper to buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always encourage people to change their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw away old ones. In the EU alone, about 8,700,000 tons of e-waste is produced each year. Sadly, just over 1,000,000 tons is recycled. Burying (填埋) e-waste or burning it cause serious problems for the environment.     2     These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.     3     However, their plans are not always managed properly. Sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health, Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly.     4    This means that producers must take back old products. They should then make sure old products are properly recycled or reused. As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste.     5     And don’t buy a product just to have the latest model. E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.

A.Change electronics only when we have to.
B.We live in a society that is producing and using electronics all the time.
C.Electronics have dangerous things in them.
D.We should change our electronics as soon as possible.
E.In recent years, many countries have started recycling e-waste.
F.Electronics are safe things so we don’t need to change them.
G.Another way is to make producers responsible for their used products.
