文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲了一位70岁的老奶奶为了拯救环境,坚持清理垃圾,并且将一直坚持下去的故事。

1 . To save the environment, we must all join in — and nobody knows this better than 70-year-old grandmother Pat Smith who spent 2018 cleaning up litter from 52 beaches in Cornwall on the United Kingdom’s south coast.

Smith set out in January, 2018 to carry out her New Year’s resolution of making her community a better and cleaner place. The ambitious goal came to her after she watched a documentary on plastic pollution the previous year, and she knew she couldn’t just sit by.

Often, volunteers would join her in her efforts, including her grandchildren, or she would join hands with other campaigners such as Wayne Dixon, who is walking around the UK coast as an ambassador for Keep Britain Tidy.

During her beach cleans, Smith was sometimes mistaken for doing community service! She said, “People don’t understand I’ve been doing this voluntarily. We should all take responsibility for picking up the litter as well as ensuring we don’t drop litter in the first place.

Even before her beach cleanups, Smith had begun her first environmental campaign to eliminate plastic straws (吸管) in her city of Cornwall . To date, she has encouraged 600 local companies to stop using unnecessary plastic. In an effort to make her hometown an example for the plastic-free movement in the United Kingdom, she founded The Final Straw Cornwall in the summer of 2017. “I founded the Final Straw to try and raise awareness of the disastrous damage we are doing to our oceans from our casual consumption of single-use plastics. I feel I have a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it.” She said.

Her resolution year may be over but this environmentally conscious grandma continues her quest (追求). “A lot of the rubbish I’ve picked up consists of everyday items,” said Smith. “These things are used by all of us and it is shocking to find them polluting our beautiful beaches. Please let’s try to be more thoughtful in this coming year. I’m driven to try and protect our living planet for my children and grandchildren and I will continue to do everything in my power to achieve that.”

A.Community service.
B.A film or television program.
C.Various ocean protection campaigns.
D.Serious pollution in her community.

A.She was forced to do that.
B.She just pretended to be caring.
C.She actually did only a little work.

A.set an example to other aged people
B.stop her local companies from producing plastic straws
C.keep her promise to her children and grandchildren
D.make people conscious of the plastic-related environmental problem
4. What opinion about environmental protection did Smith hold?
A.It’s everyone’s duty.
B.It’s as hard as people think.
C.Prevention is more important than protection.
D.The younger generation don’t care about it enough.
5. Which of the following best describes Smith as an environmental activist?

2 . Researchers at MIT and in China developed a simple, solar-powered water desalination (脱盐) system. They have made a breakthrough in getting fresh drinking water from sea water by using sunlight.

As the research paper published in Energy & Environmental Science explains, equipment applied in this system includes several layers of fiat evaporators (蒸发器) that turn water sources into fresh water through solar energy, as well as condensers (冷凝器) that cool the gas into the liquid. The authors of the paper are MIT students Lenan Zhang and Lin Zhao, Professor Evelyn Wang, and nine other researchers at MIT and at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

How the system uses each of the multiple stages to remove salt from the water is critical to its efficiency. The heat released per stage will be used by the next stage. In this way, the team’s device can convert (转换) the energy of sunlight into the energy of water evaporation with an efficiency of 385 percent.

The device can be considered as a multilayer solar still. The heat is absorbed by its flat panels and then transferred to make water evaporate. The vapor then cools down and turns into liquid water on the next panel. As the water is collected, the released heat is transferred to the next layer.

The team’s 10-stage system produces pure water. Its quality is above the city drinking water standards. It also has the highest yield compared to other similar systems, at a rate of nearly six cubic decimeter per hour for every square meter of the solar collecting area. The system is distinguished from some others by the fact that there is no accumulated salt to be got rid of. Most materials of the demonstration unit don’t cost much and are easy to get.

Further experiments will be carried out on the device to optimize the choices of materials and test its durability under realistic conditions. Researchers will also work on the design of the device to make it more consumer-friendly. It is expected that the system could finally help developing regions that are short of electricity supplies but rich in sea water and sunlight handle water crises.

1. What contributes most to the high efficiency of the device?
A.The recycling of released heat.B.The choice of materials.
C.The use of multilayer equipment.D.The simplicity of the structure.
2. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.What the device is for.B.How solar energy is collected.
C.How the device works.D.What makes the device.
3. What makes the device different from other systems?
A.The quality of water it produces.B.Its zero accumulation of salt.
C.Its stable and high production level.D.The low cost of its condensers.
4. What does the underlined word “optimize” mean?
A.make cheapB.make perfectC.make diverseD.make beautiful
5. Why will researchers carry out further experiments on the device?
A.To make it suitable for use by consumers.B.To make it environment-friendly.
C.To check its performance in labs.D.To reduce its cost.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。文章描述了一起在飓风过后,通过交互式航拍地图发现求救信号并成功救援的真实事件。
5 . 阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。

After being evacuated (疏散) from her Florida home following Hurricane Michael. Amber Gee was attempting to get an idea of the destruction left behind when she discovered a sign of trouble. As reported by ABC News, Gee was using NOAA’s interactive aerial map (交互式航拍地图) to check the damage done to her and her family’s homes when she spotted the word “H-E-L-P” spelled out in the yard.

The NOAA website allows those impacted in the hurricane to get a look at specific streets or homes by zooming in on (用变焦距镜头拉近) aerial imagery of the affected area. According to ABC News, Gee was looking at one of these photos when she noticed a cry for help spelled out in wood in the front yard of her grandmother’s Bay County home.

Though her grandmother had evacuated, several other family members, including Gee’s uncle and his wife, had stayed behind. After spotting the message, Gee alerted (向……报警) Bay County Emergency Services, who went to the house and rescued those who were trapped in the residence.

“Apparently, they had to cut through a lot of downed trees to get there,” Gee told ABC News. Her uncle, Ernest, had reportedly used wood from one of those trees to spell out the message.

After the rescue, Bay County Emergency Services posted the incident on their Facebook page, writing, “This is an incredible story of how people are working together in this situation. Someone from another county was using the mapping app to check property in rural Bay County and noticed the word ‘help’ spelled out in the grass in wood. That person immediately contacted us and sent the picture and we dispatched emergency workers.”

Meanwhile, Gee says she is thankful that she was able to use the mapping tool to get her family to safety. “The hurricane has turned everything upside down everywhere. Some were more fortunate than others. I’m just happy that everybody is safe and sound and, hopefully, soon we will all get through this together and recover from this storm,” she said.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了周二海豚突然造访被污染的港口。

10 . Dozens of dolphins swam out of the polluted waters of Haifa Harbor on Tuesday. This was the first time that dolphins had visited this crowded Mediterranean Port, and researchers were surprised by the unexpected event.

Between 40 and 50 of the dolphins appeared in the busy port on Tuesday morning, obviously drawn by the fish-rich waters of Haifa Bay.

However, the bay is also full of harmful chemicals. Avia d Sheinin, professor of Haifa University’s Maritime Studies Department, said he didn’t think the dolphins were harmed by the pollution, but that he hoped they would swim back to the sea soon. “It seems that they are quite relaxed. They don’t seem to be stressed,” he said.

Haifa Bay is lined by chemical companies that have been pouring poisonous waste into the water for decades. While pollution levels have dropped in recent years, the water is still considered a health hazard, whispering warnings to those who draw near.

“There are lots of fishes in Haifa Port. Unfortunately, we couldn’t tell the dolphins that the fish are not healthy, and I don’t know what the result will be,” he told Israel Army Radio.

Hundreds of Haifa residents gathered around Haifa Bay to see the interesting sight, and researchers said this provided a rare chance to film and study the rough-toothed dolphins. In addition to the dozens of dolphins which swam into the port on Tuesday, a similar number stayed outside the breakwater (防波堤). Later Tuesday the dolphins left the port but remained near the entrance and Israel’s coastguard was patrolling (巡逻) the area to try to make sure the dolphins didn’t re-enter the poisonous waters.

Relatively little is known about rough-toothed dolphins, which are usually found in deep and warm tropical waters.

1. What cause the dolphins to appear at Haifa Harbor?
A.Clean water.B.Food supply.
C.Social behavior.D.Water temperature.
2. What does the underlines word “hazard” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Danger.B.Benefit.
C.Plan.D.Survey.
3. What does Aviad Sheinin’s words suggest?
A.He is curious about the dolphins.
B.He will do research on the dolphins.
C.He is uncertain about what will happen to the dolphins.
D.The dolphins might affect the existence of fish in Haifa port.
4. What is the purpose of Israel’s coastguard deed?
A.To avoid traffic jam.
B.To deal with the harmful waters.
C.To prevent people killing dolphins.
D.To protect the dolphins from the polluted waters.
5. What does this passage mainly tell us?
A.People love dolphins.
B.Dolphins are well protected in Israel.
C.Haifa Bay is full of harmful chemicals.
D.Dolphins made a surprise visit to the polluted harbor.
