文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章对科学家们新开发出的一种可以清除水中微塑料颗粒的机器鱼进行了相关介绍。

1 . Chinese scientists say they have developed a robotic fish that can remove microplastic particles from water environments. Researchers working on the project say the robots could help to clean up plastic pollution in oceans around the world.

The robotic swimmers are about 1.3 centimeters long. They are made of a soft chemical Compound. The robots are designed to absorb microplastics while moving through the water. The project was launched by a team at Sichuan University in southwestern China. The researchers said the robots have already performed well in shallow water and they plan to carry out more tests in deeper waters. The scientists reported their findings in a new study in Nano Letters. The publication comes from the American Chemical Society, a nonprofit organization supported by the U.S. Congress. The robotic fish were built to target microplastic particles, which are smaller than five millimeters. Studies have confirmed that microplastic pollution has been discovered in many natural environments. The material comes from the breakdown of manufactured plastic products and industrial waste.

The team said the robots can be controlled by light. Turning “a near-infrared light laser” on and off causes the fish’s tail to move back and forth, the American Chemical Society said. The robotic fish can swim up to 2.76 body lengths per second. The researchers said this is faster than most similar soft robots. Wang Yuyan was a member of Sichuan University’s research team. She told Reuters news agency that the small, lightweight robot is currently being used to collect microplastics for research purposes. But Wang added that the team plans to expand that use so the robot fish can remove larger amounts of microplastic waste from deep ocean areas. The fish can take in different kinds of microplastics and even repair itself when damaged, the researchers said. And if a robot fish is accidentally eaten by a real fish, it can safely digest the material, the team added. Wang said similar robots could be developed to be placed inside the human body to remove unwanted materials or diseases.

1. Why has a robotic fish been created?
A.To remove disease in people.
B.To clean up pollution in oceans.
C.To remove unwanted materials in body.
D.To remove microplastic particles in water.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The purpose of the robotic fish.
B.The function of the robotic fish,
C.A further introduction of the robotic fish.
D.Potential application of the robotic fish.
3. What will happen to the robotic fish when eaten by a real fish?
A.It will be harmless.B.It will repair itself.
C.It will take in microplastics.D.It will collect microplastics.
4. What is Wang Yuyan’s attitude to the future use of the robotic fish?
A.Pessimistic.B.Positive.C.Unclear.D.Suspicious.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一款名为“Too Good To Go”的应用程序,该程序有效地帮助商家减少了食物的浪费。

2 . Every Sunday at 2 p.m., Marisela Godinez, the owner of El Mesón Tequilería, a Mexican restaurant in Austin, Texas, used to fill a 12-gallon bucket, plus another half-bucket, with leftover food from the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat brunch buffet. “We threw out a lot of food,” she said.

But a few months ago Ms. Godinez signed up to use an app called Too Good To Go. Now, 10 customers pick up “surprise bags” of her leftovers for $ 5. 99 each, and she sends far fewer leftovers to the landfill.

Around the country, apps that connect customers to businesses with leftover food have begun to spread. The concept is simple: Restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of food every day. Rather than trash it, apps like Too Good To Go and Flashfood help businesses sell it at a reduced price. They claim that the businesses and buyers are helping the environment because the food would otherwise become food waste, a big contributor to climate change.

Food production itself is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for between a quarter and a third of global emissions. Each step of the process-growing, harvesting, moving, processing, packaging, storing and preparing food-releases carbon dioxide, methane and other planet-warming gases. When the food is wasted, so are all those emissions. In addition, once unused food reaches landfills, it breaks down and releases more methane.

Too Good To Go has tried to gamify (游戏化) buying leftover food. In the United States, customers in 12 cities can browse restaurants and stores, then reserve “surprise bags” that typically cost about $4 to $ 6 and contain food that would have been originally priced at roughly three times that amount. The bags can be picked up at a certain time window.

According to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, at least a few items for sale there aren’t necessarily what buyers might think of as “food waste”. A beverage company owner said he used the app to sell discontinued products and he also wanted to try selling new flavors there in hopes of attracting new customers.

1. How does Marisela Godinez deal with leftovers now?
A.By throwing them into buckets.B.By sending them to the landfill.
C.By selling them on the special app.D.By offering them to customers for free.
2. What does Paragraph 4 really want to say?
A.The complex process of food production.
B.The best way to reduce gas emission.
C.The popularity of Too Good To Go.
D.The negative effect of food waste.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Different kinds of games can be played on the app.
B.The goal of the app is to help people find food easily.
C.Discontinued products are sold on Too Good To Go.
D.New food products might be bought on Too Good To Go.
4. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Too Good To Go helps cut a significant amount of food waste.
B.Too Good To Go inspires everyone to fight against gas emission.
C.Too Good To Go saves a number of people from being hungry.
D.Too Good To Go contributes to the increase of the business well.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要说明了作者在封锁期间,上了“绿色素描”课程,介绍了这一活动的目的以及素描的积极作用。

3 . Hands up, who’s rubbish at drawing? Ha! Bet you’re not as bad as me.

Like most during lockdown, I missed being in familiar green city spaces. A quick snap on my phone never quite captured the moment. So excitingly, I found “green sketching” sessions near my home.

This type of art, “green sketching”, was inspired by environmental scientist Dr Ali Foxon. Ali thought that spreading the joy of sketching could be the key to making people care about nature instead of just wordy reports. She launched her movement, Boggy Doodles, in 2016.

The day we were there the forest was glorious. We spent the last hour trying to capture a forest scene I made a real effort to catch the dark and brighter areas of the trunks, their textures. I used an eraser to create the white shape of a silver tree in the distance. Mine looked more like a winter scene. But when the five of us brought our work together at the end, I wasn’t too ashamed: mine was only just the worst.

At the prospect of a new lock down, I can’t be the only one to feel sad. Sketching calms a busy, anxious mind and trains the brain to notice “little things” that spark joy and help strengthen us against life’s challenges. While engaging with nature may well make us keener on protecting it — in Robert Macfarlane’s words, “We will not save what we do not love — and we rarely love what we cannot name or do not see”— the benefits of sketching work the other way round.

1. Why would the author be a member of the “green sketching”?
A.She was eager to return to green spaces.B.She followed her friends’ advice to do so.
C.She wanted to improve her painting skills.D.She needed something special to kill time.
2. What is the purpose of the “green sketching” activity?
A.To let participants learn a skill.B.To help participants to write a report.
C.To introduce people to a relaxing activity.D.To raise the awareness of protecting nature.
3. What does the underlined word “spark” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Arouse.B.Release.C.Decline.D.Prevent.
4. What do Robert’s words convey?
A.Sketching can strengthen one’s creativity.B.A calm mind overcomes challenges in life.
C.Doing things we love brings us happiness.D.To protect nature is to connect with it first.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些消费者也可以帮助应对气候变化的措施。

4 . When talking to people about climate change, you might always get asked the question: What can you do to help as a consumer? Here are some specific steps you can take:

Sign up for a green pricing program with your electric utility. Some utility companies allow homes and businesses to pay extra for power from clean sources. When you participate in these programs, you’re telling your utility company that you’re willing to pay more to address climate.    1    Without that demand signal, the innovations that governments and businesses invest in will stay in the shelf.

2    Depending on how much money and time you can spare, you can replace your incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, install a smart thermostat, insulate your windows, buy efficient appliances, or replace your heating and cooling system with a heat pump.

Buy an electric vehicle (EV). EVs have come a long way in terms of cost and performance. Although they might not be right for everyone, they’re becoming more affordable for many consumers.    3     People buy lots of them, companies will make lots of them.

4    . Veggie burgers haven’t always tasted great. However, the new generation of plant-based protein alternatives is better and closer to the taste and texture of meat than their predecessors.     5    . In addition, eating a meat substitute just once or twice a week will cut down on the e-missions you’re responsible for. The same goes for dairy products.

A.That’s cost-effective.
B.Try a plant-based burger.
C.Reduce your home’s emissions.
D.That’s an important market signal.
E.EVs are friendly to environment and easy to drive.
F.You can find them in many restaurants and grocery stores.
G.This is where consumers’ behavior can have a huge impact.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了飓风艾达给墨西哥湾沿岸居民造成的破坏,以及人们灾后重建的情况。

5 . After being attacked by Hurricane Ida’s 150 mph winds and torrential rains, hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents were left without power and fresh water this week as a 100-degree heat wave settled over the region. Ida smashed into Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, ripping off roofs, knocking out transmission lines, flooding roads, and reducing some brick buildings in downtown New Orleans to rubble. At least eight people died in the storm and the toll is expected to rise as emergency workers search wrecked homes and businesses.

One of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the U.S. mainland, Ida brought a 5 to 12-foot storm surge that covered low-lying communities in southeastern Louisiana. Grand Isle is now “uninhabitable,” said Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng, with 3 feet of sand covering the entire barrier island and 40 percent of the buildings completely destroyed.

The storm caused a citywide blackout in New Orleans, but a Hurricane Katrina-level disaster was avoided there, thanks in part to the $ 14.5 billion spent on new levees, seawalls, and pumps after the 2005 storm. Experts are warning that Ida could worsen the Covid crisis in the Gulf Coast, as residents crowd together in homes and emergency shelters without immediate access to testing or medical care. ICUs in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama hospitals were already near capacity be- fore the storm hit. Nearly 1 million people are still without power across Louisiana, and authorities waned it could be weeks before electricity is restored. “If you have already evacuated,” said Gov. John Bel Edwands, “do not return here.”

1. Which of the following best describes Hurricane Ida?
A.Mild.B.Destructive.C.Uncontrollable.D.Impressive.
2. What does the underlined words “the toll” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.The death number.B.The heat wave.
C.The wind speed.D.The citywide blackout.
3. What is one of the reasons for Grand Isle to be uninhabitable?
A.The entire island is covered with sand.B.It is one of the low-lying communities.
C.The residents there can't wait to leave.D.Over half of its buildings were in ruins.
4. What can be inferred about the attitude of Gov. John Bel Edwards towards the prospect of Louisiana?
A.AmbitiousB.Undoubted.C.Indifferent.D.Unconfident.

6 . Each year, about 250 billion to-go cups serve coffee and tea from places like Starbucks and McDonald’s are produced to satisfy the world’s love for hot drinks on the run. These paper-based cups have the inside surface covered with plastic to prevent water from escaping, and keep water from being absorbed into the material. Despite this, that also removes any opportunity for the cups to be biodegradable (可生物降解的).

The materials that created these cups of goodness and convenience are recyclable but only if separated. In addition, the demand for such resources is low, so they are worth next to nothing.

In response to this great challenge, NextGen Consortium, multi-year partnership led by Starbucks and McDonald’s launched their first big initiative (倡议)—NextGen Cup. The first step in NextGen Cup was an open competition where participants presented ideas for sleeves, cups, lids and other parts of the hot-cold paper-based takeaway coffee cup that would make it reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable; to finally be widely used. 12 winners, announced in 2019, shared a prize of $1 million, as well as personalized growth, and support from members of NextGen Consortium.

Later, they launched two pilot programs at independent coffee shops in California. In one case, customers were given “smart” reusable cups made mostly from recyclable plastic. They then could drop their empties into collection containers at key locations, for washing and reuse. These cups were printed with RFID chips or QR codes, through which coffee shops can know where there is the greatest need for collection containers and how many are not using them.

To reduce coffee cup waste, Cup Club is already replacing millions of takeaway cups in the UK, while Recup in Germany, has performed a deposit system that simply adds a small extra fee to any coffee cup which is returned to the buyer after the cup is deposited in any registered collection point.

1. What can we say about the paper-based cups?
A.They can absorb water easily.B.They are not popular in life.
C.They can’t be easily recycled.D.They are attractive in low price.
2. What’s the theme of the NextGen Cup?
A.Separating recyclable materials from the cups.
B.Making the cups green and easily available.
C.Reducing the unnecessary parts of the cups.
D.Gaining the support from their partners.
3. What’s the function of RFID chips or QR codes?
A.Knowing about customers’ preference for coffee shops.
B.Collecting the information on which shop is empty.
C.Helping choose where customer can drink coffee.
D.Making the recycling of cups more efficient.
4. What does the word “which” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.A collection point.B.A deposit system.
C.A small extra fee.D.Any coffee cup.

7 . Humans: It's time to abandon Earth or race extinction.

It could be the plot of a summer blockbuster(巨片), but this prediction isn't science fiction. It's a glimpse of the future, according to famous British scientist Stephen Hawking.

"I see great dangers for the human race," he said in an interview with global forum Big Think. "There have been a number of times in the past when its survival has been a question of touch and go."

"I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space", he said. "It will be difficult enough to avoid disasters on planet Earth in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand, or million."

Hawking, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year, has recently voiced many concerns about the future of life on Earth.

"If aliens visited us, the outcome would be as much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," he said. "Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads(游牧者), looking to conquer(征服) and colonize whatever planets they can reach."

But Hawking says he's still hopeful for the future of humanity. He told Big Think, "We've made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space."

Getting to another planet will prove a challenge, not to mention colonizing it for humanity. Katherine Freese from University of Michigan told Big Think that "the nearest star to Earth is Proxima Centauri which is 4.2 light years away. That means, if you were traveling at the speed of light the whole time, it would take 4.2 years to get there — or about 50,000 years using current rocket science."

1. Humans are advised to abandon Earth mainly because _____.
A.aliens will take up our home planet soon
B.it was discussed in the forum Big Think
C.many scientists like Hawking concern it
D.many disasters will happen on the Earth
2. Thinking about the future of humans, Hawking feels that _____.
A.humans can't live on the earth any longer
B.the earth will not be habitable for humans
C.other planets are ready for humans to reach
D.aliens are the biggest future threat to humans
3. What is the writer's key point in the last paragraph?
A.It is impossible to get to another planet in space.
B.It is urgent for Hawking to develop the space science.
C.The near future can't see human's move to another planet.
D.The planet Proxima Centauri is far away from the earth.
4. This passage is most probably taken from _____.
A.a conference interview
B.a science fiction
C.a history book
D.a forum report

8 . What is erosion(腐蚀)? Erosion is simply when soil is transported on the earth's surface from one location to another by a natural cause.

This is easy to imagine. Picture a sandcastle on a beach. This sandcastle is particularly beautiful, the work of a whole long, hot summer afternoon. It has three towers, with a great wall running all around. Small square houses sit in an open area in the center. From the tallest tower flies a Pop-sicle-wrapper flag from a small twig flagpole. Its builder sits back, proudly admiring her work. But it is late, and the tide is coming in, bringing the water closer. Finally, the castle is hit with a giant wave. As it pulls out, the builder sees there is nothing left but bits of the towers and a small broken twig. Where has the sand gone? Not very far, really. It’s moving around the water that will wash back and forth across the beach all day. It’s spread around the beach next to the castle. However, to our eyes, it has disappeared. This is also the way with erosion. Parts of the earth seem to disappear but have really just been moved around.

A common example of water changing the landscape is sinkholes. Sinkholes are formed when underground water wears away the dirt and rock that surrounds it. Eventually, the hole underneath the ground is so big, and the earth above it so thin that the surface collapses into the hole, taking with it anything unlucky enough to be on the surface at the time. Sinkholes occur naturally and have been around a very long time. Today, though, many sinkholes are caused by the action of human beings.

In fact, today, human beings are one of the things helping to speed up erosion of the earth. Scientists believe that by pumping water from underground, moving sand dunes and other naturally-occurring anti-erosion measures, humans have allowed erosion of the earth to speed up by as much as 40 times. This means that beaches around the world are disappearing, more sinkholes are opening up, and farmland is rapidly becoming desert.

1. What’s the author’s purpose of describing a sandcastle in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the destructive force of nature.
B.To recall his happy childhood.
C.To catch the reader’s attention.
D.To explain what erosion is.
2. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the passage?
A.The hole.
B.The ground.
C.The earth.
D.The surface.
3. According to the passage, which of the following can you infer may NOT be the cause of sink-holes?
A.A lot of high-rises have been built.
B.People pump water from underground.
C.Too many mines have been opened up.
D.Underground water takes away dirt and rock around it.
4. Based on the passage, what is most likely to be one result of erosion?
A.Desertification will speed up.
B.Sinkholes will be everywhere.
C.Many plant species will disappear.
D.Earthquakes will happen more often.
