I wake up to the sound of the wind b    1     the cloth of my tent. Even though the sun is brightly s    2    , telling whether it is morning or night is impossible. I’m above the Arctic Circle where in summer the sun never sets. Checking my watch, I see that it is 7:30 a.m. I leave my tent and walk over to the mountain e    3    . Spreading out before me, branches of the Rapa River flow through the v    4     below. I’m in the remote far north of Sweden in Sarek National Park, a place with no roads or towns.

Sarek’s mountains used to be covered by v    5     sheets of ice. Around 9,000 years ago, this ice m    6    , leaving behind about 100 g    7    . Soon after, reindeer began to arrive. Following the reindeer were the Sami people, who made this territory their home. Getting here is quite difficult, so apart from the Sami very few people have ever seen Sarek. In 1909, Sarek was made a national park in order to keep the land in its n    8     state. Though the Sami are allowed to continue their traditional way to life in the park, no one else can live here, and all development is b    9     within park boundaries. At the side of the valley, an ancient Sami c    10     is visible. Close by, there are a few reindeer feeding on grass.

The awful night     1    , and the dawn greyly broke on THE LACT DAY OF POMPEII! The crowd looked upwards, and saw, with     2    , a huge cloud shooting from the top of the volcano. It took the form of a huge tree: the trunk, blackness, the branches, fire! This fire moved and changed in colour with every moment: now it was wildly bright, now of a     3    red, and now again it burnt with     4    .

The cries of women     5     ; the men looked at each other, but were silent. At that moment, they felt the earth shaking     6    ; beyond in the distance, they heard the crash of     7    . A moment later, the mountain-cloud seemed to roll towards them, cark and rapid, like a river; at the same time, it threw out a shower of ashes and huge pieces of burning stone! Over the empty streets—over the forum—far and wide—with many a noisy crash in     8    —fell that awful shower!

Each turned to fly—each running pressing pushing against the other. If, in the darkness, wife     9    husband, or parent room child, there was no hope of their meeting again. Each     10    and fearfully on. So came the earthquake...and so ended life in Pompeii.

Hunting and fishing have directly     1     the world’s animal populations. Some people hunt animals for food: whale meat is eaten in some parts of the world. Some people hunt animals for fashion: animal skin is used to make costs and bags. Still others hunt animals just for fun: deer are     2     and shot by people who enjoy the     3     of the sport.

Human activities that have     4     effects on animals can be just as harmful. When we build farms or factories, we destroy animal     5     and leave many animals with     6     to live, or no food to eat. We can also put animals in danger without ever entering their habitats. Air, water, noise and light pollution can all have a deep and     7     influence quite far from their source.     8     due to pollution     9     by ship traffic and other human activities, the dolphin population has dropped greatly. In order to save this species from     1    , the Chinese government placed it under national protection. But hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to dig out those who were     1     and to     2     the dead. More than 10, 000 doctors and nurses came to provide medical care. Workers built     3    for survivors     4     homes had been destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. Water and food were brought into the city by train, truck, and plane. Slowly, the city began to     5    again.

Tangshan started to     6     itself and get back up on its feet. With strong support from the government and the tireless     7     of the city’s people, a new Tangshan was built upon the earthquake ruins. The new city has become a     8     to more than seven million people, with great improvements in transportation, industry, and environment. Tangshan city has proved to China and the rest of the world that in times of disaster, people must     9     and show the     10     to stay positive and rebuild for a brighter future.
