Litter is everywhere, doing great harm to the environment and life on our planet. Jeff Kirschner, who wants to build a litter-free world, started a global community named Litterati     1     (settle) this problem.

The story began with his 6-year-old daughter. One day they were going on a hike     2     the girl noticed a broken plastic tub in a river. She said, “Daddy, that doesn’t go there.” That took Kirschner by surprise. He, like many adults, bad become so used to the rubbish around them that he hadn’t given it     3     second look.     4     his daughter said reminded him of the serious problem our planet faces.

Jeff started to take action. He created Litterati, an app that makes it fun to pick up litter. The idea is     5     (fair) simple: Spot a piece of trash, take a photo, post the photo online and then put the litter into dustbins.

    6     that Jeff was keeping a record of the positive impact he was having     7     the environment, people worldwide started participating in it. Up to now, over 2,500,000 photos posted by 3,500 people from over 40 countries     8     their way to Litterati’s digital landfill.

Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, traffic jams and pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So since 2007, the city     1     (begin) a plan to improve the situation.

Under the Velib scheme (公共自行车计划), people can take a bicycle, use it as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half hour is free,     2     if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. The bicycles are as heavy as 25 kilograms, and they’re all grey and have     3     (basket).

Paris isn’t the first city     4     (operate)a scheme like this. Not everybody thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian (巴黎人) said, “These bicycles are only suitable     5     short journeys. ”

A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all our traffic problems, but it might work in     6     (reduce) air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes,     7    (be) big problem. Global warming and dramatic climate changes are becoming more and more serious,     8     is partly because rain-forests are     9     (gradual) disappearing. And it’s also because there’s so much pollution. Unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get even     10     (bad). ”

Strange things appeared before the Tangshan earthquake happened. For three days the water in the village wells     1    (rise) and fell. The well walls had deep cracks in them. A smelly gas came out of the cracks. Some animals including fish,     2    (mouse) behaved strangely. Other strange things also happened in the city,     3     people thought little of these events and they slept as usual.

Finally    4     terrible earthquake hit the city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, in which more than 240,000 people died and many     5    (injure). Many houses fell down and sand filled the wells instead of water. People were greatly shocked. All the electricity in the city was cut off and people began to wonder how long the disaster would last. The whole city was completely destroyed and the world seemed to be     6    an end. It was one of the most destructive earthquakes ever, which shocked the whole nation.

However, the people of Tangshan didn’t lose hope because 150,000 soldiers were sent     7    (help) the rescue workers. The soldiers tried their best to dig out those    8     were trapped. They also built shelters for the     9    (survive). Fresh water was taken to the city by every means.     10    (slow) , the city began to come back to life.

Today, I made a trip to observe Tibetan antelopes. I was struck by their beauty when I watched them moving slowly across the green grass. Also I was reminded     1     the danger they are in. They are being hunted     2     (illegal) for their valuable fur.

My guide Zhaxi told me     3     1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope,     4     population dropped sharply because of shooting and habitat loss. Luckily, the government     5    (take) effective measures to save this species. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes to keep     6    (they) safe from attacks. Finally, with all of the     7     (effort), the antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope     8     (remove) from the endangered species list. However, the government does not intend     9     (stop) the protection programmes, because the threats to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared.

There is a long way to go to protect wildlife. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop     10     (be) a threat to wildlife and to our planet.

Climate Change Requires The World’s Attention

There is little doubt that Earth     1    (get) warmer and warmer. In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear which appeared to have starved and died. This     2    (alarm) case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact     3    Earth’s ecology.

Climate scientists often mention a key climate process     4    (call) the “greenhouse effect”,     5    has two common meanings. Without the “natural” greenhouse effect, Earth could not sustain life. However, the “man-made” greenhouse effect has now become a big problem because more heat energy     6    (trap) in the atmosphere, causing Earth’s surface temperature to rise quickly.

There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and     7    (nature) disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will     8    (probable) continue and there will be a higher price     9    (pay).

Governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce our “carbon footprint”. It is our     10    (responsible) to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts.
