I am a 22-year-old artist. My journey through art led me to being an environmentalist.

    1    we consider waste may be useful when we think about it in a different light. Although largely    2     (ignore), materials thrown away provide plenty of resources for us artists to give them a second life. In my hands, glass bottles, plastic bags, and other waste    3    (item) become a form of sustainable art. I want to motivate the people who buy this type of art to contribute to the planet’s welfare.

An art exhibition on the theme of Nipponia Nippon was held in Shanghai as part of efforts to promote the harmony     1     human and nature as well as communication among China, Japan and South Korea.

Nipponia Nippon, or Zhuhuan in Chinese,     2     (know) as an auspicious (吉祥的) bird in oriental culture. In 1981, only seven wild Nipponia Nippon were found in Hanzhong of Shaanxi Province,     3     unveiled (拉开……的帷幔) the protection and breeding of the bird. China then sent some birds to Japan and South Korea in the     4     (follow) years, an act which gifted the bird its nickname “friendship ambassador”.

People from the three countries have deep affection for the bird, which     5     (become) a symbol of friendship. Since 1985, these birds from China have been settling down in Japan and South Korea. This has not only created     6    (condition) for the protection and rebuilding of the bird community in the two countries,     7     also created the opportunity to build a new bridge to promote     8     (ecology) civilization construction based on the cooperation of the three countries.A seminar of the same name was held recently. During     9     event, experts from the three countries shared their experience and views on     10     (protect) the bird and bilateral cooperation.

Dongying city in China’s Shandong Province has witnessed(目睹) ecological improvements in the Yellow River Delta, thanks to various    1    (effect) measures to improve wetland restoration and protection.

Years ago, the wetlands there    2    (threaten) due to less water from the river and other factors.    3    (protect) the wetlands ecosystem, the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve was established in 1992. Since then, the city    4    (carry) out several management projects and restored the biotic(生物) population in the zone.

Dongying has been adopting a comprehensive wetlands restoration model by giving high     5    (prior) to protecting the nature reserve and letting nature restore     6    (it). Over the past three years, it’s transferred(转运) 469 million cubic meters of water to the nature reserve,    7    has recovered the ecological functions of the wetlands there.

Last year, Dongying built a real-time monitoring network for bird species at the nature reserve, which helps ensure that birds are free    8    disturbance of human activity and puts the habitats of cranes and other species under key protection. As a result, the nature reserve has seen    9    obvious increase in the variety and number of bird species. Home to 371 bird species, it’s become an important stop, wintering ground and breeding place for migratory birds. Dongying is currently working to build the Yellow River Estuary National Park, which will cover 3,523 square kilometers,    10    (include) land area and sea area, to explore pathways for the protection of Delta ecology.

Coral reefs are being planted in the deep seabed around Hainan Province, a famous tourist destination in China, as part of efforts     1     (preserve) the maritime (海上的) environment and promote green development.

Coral reefs cover about 2 percent of the area of sea floor and provide habitats for about 25 percent of     2     (creature). They play     3     important role in stabilizing ecology of the ocean, according to experts. They work as     4     (extreme) natural barriers to weaken the impact of waves crashing on the shore.

However, survival of coral reefs have been challenged due     5     changes in the maritime environment. In 2019, the Hainan South China Sea Institute of Tropical Ocean initiated a program to plant     6     (million) of coral reefs through professional breeding technology.

“It’s like     7     (plant) trees under the sea,” said Chen Hong, director of the institute. “Though they grow slowly, the seedlings no     8     (big) than fingernails may become coral reefs     9     size can surpass several soccer fields.”

In recent years, the team has planted over 200,000 coral reefs around Sanya city and Danzhou city. That quantity     10     (break) the national record of coral reefs transplantation for amount and survival rate.

Despite the rapid progress of society, there is a widespread recognition that the quality of life in large cities is getting much    1    (bad). The proper way to tackle this problem is developing mixed-use areas. Mixed-use areas, for example, may contain offices and businesses, apartments, and entertainment facilities.    2    (apparent), they attract people who want to live and work in the same area. Therefore, people spend less time in cars driving to work and play,     3     in turn reduces pollution and possibly improves the well-being of the population.

As it is a typical Roman city, you can see     4     model of the whole Roman empire in Pompeii.     5    (unfortunate), the cloud-capped top of Mount Vesuvius looked odd. Its ashy rocks told a story of past eruptions that might have warned the city what was to come!

The busy citizens     6    (look) upwards with unspeakable fear when a huge cloud shot from the peak of the volcano. Then came the fire! The cries of women broke out; men looked at each other, but     7    (be) silent. At the same time, they felt the earth shaking beneath their feet;     8     the distance, they heard the sound of falling     9    (roof). Later, the mountain-cloud seemed     10     (roll) towards them, dark and rapid, like a river; meanwhile, it threw out a shower of ashes and huge pieces of burning stone! All the people hurried blindly and fearfully on. So came the earthquake... and so ended life in Pompeii.

Long after fire and ash came for the people of Pompeii, the remains of their beautiful city survive to remind us that human lives burn bright and short.

KUNMING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua)-Forest police from Hongtupo township, Southwest China’s Yunnan province，recently finished their annual patrol (巡逻) of    1    famous stopover (中途停留) site and habitat for migratory (迁徙的) birds in the Ailao Mountain area.

The officers with the forest police station of Hongtupo, Nanhua county enter forests in the Nanhua area of the Ailao Mountain national nature reserve every September    2    remain there until the following February. During their stay, they patrol the forests in Dazhong Mountain, deep in the Ailao area    3    (prevent) poaching (偷猎) and other wildlife crimes.

The Hongtupo forest police station, known as “a migratory police station”,    4    (establish) in 1984 in response to illegal poaching on the mountain. A huge variety of wildlife was hunted to near    5    (extinct), according to Zhang Yueping, an instructor with the police station.

The police station got off to a rough start, with no running water, no phone service, and significant    6    (challenge) in the delivery of supplies.    7    (initial), the officers had no choice but to live in tents. It was not until 2010 that a house was built for the officers at the foot of Dazhong Mountain.

Despite the tough conditions, generations of protection efforts    8    (pay) off over the years. Since 2019, zero cases of poaching have been reported. During the migration season, birds can be seen    9    (fly) right over people’s heads.
