2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My dad is a helpful police off and I respect him very much. In his spare time, he likes volunteering to give lectures on law to the children in our community.

I remember my father took a special care of a family made up of a struggling single father, Jack, and his three sons. The elder boys seemed kind and understanding while the youngest boy, Tom, was naughty and wild. When helping Jack in life and work, my father always taught his children to obey the law.

During one visit, my dad and Jack had a deep conversation. During their talk, Jack expressed his concern about the future of his youngest boy, and said, “As we know, Tom is a clever boy, but he is too competitive. He always behaves badly at school. For some reason, he fought with his classmate again yesterday. I don’t know how to deal with him.” Obviously, he felt powerless to guide Tom. So, he asked for my father’s advice and ideas. “Will you allow your boy to leave the city for a few days? I want to take him to spend the summer with my son in the suburbs(郊区) of our hometown.” My dad offered the only solution he could think of on the spot. However, Jack agreed and was grateful to my father.

My dad decided that it would be good for Tom to see another side of family life, which he had never been experiencing. Then he discussed the plan with me. I couldn’t agree more.

When the summer vacation came, we had a new member, Tom, in our family. Although we seemed very unfamiliar to him, he had no trouble adapting to the new home environment. Amazingly, we found that he was an honest and open boy and got along well with the whole family. He seemed to like playing in the backyard and particularly enjoyed swimming in the pool. Wherever my father went, he took both of us with him. It wasn’t long before Tom and I became good friends. I felt so lucky to have him with me, and I even shared everything interesting with him.

Michael, a 58-year-old man, lives in one of the most magical places in the world, Honolulu, Hawaii, which is known as an ideal vacation spot for most Americans. He gets to call this place home. But he has difficulty finding a regular place to live in. Being a homeless man, he usually sleeps on the streets and beaches of Honolulu.

Michael has an interest in baseball, so he often takes advantage of the wonderful weather to play baseball. That’s how he earns him the nickname “Baseball Michael”. Many of his friends know where to find him — in the former Heald College parking garage (停车场). There, he practices his skills, in the hope of making it big one day.

Several days ago, when Michael was hitting some baseballs, he lost one in a narrow gap between the parking garage and a drug store next door. He kept on playing. After losing a total of six balls, he decided to go down to get them. The gap was so narrow that he wasn’t sure whether he could squeeze in (挤进去). But realizing those baseballs were his only possessions, he finally made up his mind to have a try.

Michael made his way down the gap, but things turned tricky. He saw it was narrow at the bottom but he thought he was thin enough to enter it. Moments later, he let out an “uh oh”. Beyond his expectation, the space was too small for him to fit. However, he kept going with his eyes on his baseballs. He whispered, “Don’t give up. They are all I have.”

As Michael went down a little lower and lower, he realized that there was no way to return. He had to wait for somebody to rescue him. As he didn’t bring his mobile phone along, he had to shout as loudly as he could. However, there was no one answering him. Half an hour later, he felt extremely thirsty. He was very tired and afraid that he could no longer hold on. Just when he was about to give up, he heard the sound of footsteps was approaching.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述Sanjay Agarwalla创建在线市场Kisan Network来帮助印度农民从农产品销售中获得更多收益。

4 . Imagine you’re a farmer in India with a crop of potatoes to sell. Typically, you go to a marketplace called a mandi and get the best price you can from a local middleman, who will then sell them to another middleman.

Sanjay Agarwalla learned about Indian farmers’ lack of access to buyers even when he was a student decades ago. After talking the problem over with his son Aditya, then a computer science major at Princeton University, the two decided to form an online marketplace they called the Kisan Network in late 2015.

“Anything that deals with agriculture in India is pretty large. So, if it’s a problem, the problem can affect millions of people, and the impact of the solution could be enormous,” Sanjay says. After all, some 70 percent of rural households in the country depend on agriculture as a main source of income.

Kisan Network’s app lets farmers advertise their produce and see potential buyers beyond the local mandi. Once the deal is completed online, Kisan runs the produce from the farmer direct to the buyer, each side staying put.

Kisan’s fee ranges from 5 to 15 percent of the sale, and farmers get to keep more than they would under the traditional system, where middleman after middleman raises the price of the produce before it reaches a final buyer. “Even with low-profit crops like potatoes, we have been able to offer 10 percent more than physical market rates. That’s what our entire goal is,” says Aditya. “As for higher-profit crops, the improvement goes up.”

Building products for this new set of technology consumers brings its own challenges. “All of our engineers are from urban backgrounds,” says Aditya Agarwalla. “It’s not like you’re building something you would use on your own.” To be effective, Kisan’s platform must work with inexpensive smartphones on slower networks and be able to support regional languages.

Today, farmers feel it’s better selling to someone who is at their doors. They do not have to typically travel miles to a mandi, staying overnight without a place to sleep.

1. How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By telling a story.B.By creating a scene.
C.By discussing a topic.D.By introducing a place.
2. What is Sanjay’s entire goal?
A.To get rid of middlemen.B.To promote high-profit crops.
C.To improve the Kisan Network.D.To help Indian growers earn more.
3. What can we learn from paragraph 6?
A.The platform needs improving.
B.The network company does not help.
C.The app’s consumers are in less developed areas.
D.The engineers are not well equipped with knowledge.

Good Neighbours

After school one winter day, Jack asked his mother to allow him to go out and play in the snow. “Sure, you can. Remember to put on your coat and your hat and your gloves,” his mother said. “You can build a snowman before your father comes home.”

“I’m going to need a carrot for the nose,” Jack said. “And I’ll need some things for the snowman’s hat and face.” Jack got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. His mother promised she would watch him build the snowman from the window.

Outside, in his front yard, Jack started with a very small ball of snow. He got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball. At another window, someone else was watching Jack play. It was his new neighbour Naoko. Naoko asked her mother if she could go outside and join Jack in building his snowman. Naoko’s mother agreed and promised to watch her from the window. “You can play until your father comes home,” her mother said.

Naoko ran outside to Jack’s yard and asked if she could help him finish his snowman.

“Yes, please help me,” Jack said. “I have built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for my snowman’s head.”

“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Naoko said.

“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack said. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.”

Jack picked up some snow and made it into a small snowball. He got on his knees and rolled the snow away from Naoko to make the snowman’s head. Naoko walked back into her own yard and began to build her own snowman.

Jack made a hat for his snowman with his bucket (桶). He used his mother’s sewing (缝) buttons for the eyes and mouth. Lastly, he added a carrot for the snowman’s nose. Seeing his snowman, Jack was happy when suddenly a terrible thing happened. The head fell off the snowman and crashed to the ground! “Oh, no! My snowman fell apart,” Jack said, “and my father is almost home!”

There is one incident in my life that makes me want to say thank you to the person involved.

My story happened in June, 1975. It began when my family was finally notified that we had successfully met all the requirements to emigrate (移民) to Canada.

We immediately set about selling our household goods to have enough money to start our life in a new country.

However, our government only allowed us to use a small portion of the money to pay for the flight tickets. The rest was required to be sent directly to a bank account in Canada. The only cash we were allowed to take along with us was $16.

We started our journey. It was the first time my children and I had left our home country, and the first time we had travelled by plane. We were filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Everything was new to us, especially the concept of in-flight entertainment. In our home country, we did not yet have access to televisions, so the thought of watching movies during the flight was thrilling.

However, our excitement quickly turned into disappointment when we realized that headphones were not provided for free. The stewardess informed us that headphones cost $1 for economy class passengers. My children looked at me with longing eyes, asking if they could have a dollar for a set of headphones which they intended to share. Deep down, I knew that we couldn’t afford to spend any of our limited cash on headphones, not even a single set.

Unwillingly, I explained the situation to my children, preparing for their disappointment and understanding that they would have to go without headphones for the duration of the flight. My children accepted it without complaint. But our disappointment must have shown clearly.

A gentleman nearby handed his headphones to us, smiling, without saying a word.

I was driving home from school one hot summer day when I realized that my car was not working right. I kept driving and prayed that it would hold out the 3 hours that I still had to go. Seconds later, everything in my car died and I barely made it off to the shoulder.

Knowing absolutely nothing about cars, I pulled off to check the oil because that was the only thing I knew how to do. As I was doing this, an older man in a truck pulled behind me and asked if I needed help. Of course, I couldn’t turn him down since I was so far from home. He could see that I was shaken up and told me to get back in the car and he would take a look to see what was wrong.

After some investigating, he informed me that it was my transmission(变速器) and he could jump my car enough to make it to the service station which was just a mile up the road. After charging my car, he led me to the station and went in to tell the mechanic what was wrong. He came back out seconds later to tell me the mechanic was out on a break and probably wouldn’t be back. However, there was a shop with auto parts and he would see if they had the right part. He went ahead and purchased the transmission for me and said he could again jump my car enough to drive it up the road to his place where he had a shop where he worked on tractors.

I again followed him up the highway to his shop and he began working on my car while I sat in the driver’s seat. After working for about an hour, trying to get the old transmission out and the new one in, he realized that he had gotten the wrong transmission and would go back into town and get the right one. While doing that, he sent me into the house where his wife had a little hair salon.
