2 . If you cut in line, you might just be a bad person. The queue is a regulation where the reward (the ice-cream stand/dining room/ticket booth) is earned through patience. Your choice to avoid this time-honored process will be bound to draw the anger of those you pass by, drawing remarks like “Whoa there, Chief,” the passive-aggressive “There’s a line, you know!” and of course, the incredibly common “Hey, Copernicus, why don’t you guide yourself to the back of the line?”

But, in the moment in which you really cannot wait, for example, the entire royal family has prepared a dinner party upon you last minute, then there is a way to cut the line correctly.

There are a few different ways to consider and a few different methods to employ. The regularity of the situation is very important. If you’re waiting to use the photocopier at work, you might be more likely to manage a successful cut than if you were waiting for a lifeboat on the Titanic. Sure, that might be an extreme example. But the importance of the event does matter.

For those requests in normal situations, emphasizing either the urgency of your task or the simplicity of your task proved to be effective: experimenters who said “Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the photocopier?” had a cut rate of 60 percent and experimenters who said “May I use the photocopier because I need to make copies?” saw a success rate of 90 per cent when queuing for the copy machine.

If you have a couple of extra dollars lying around, bribing members of the line also proved to be effective. And most of the time, the person being bribed didn’t end up accepting the money, because even the offer showed that the briber had a sense of desperation.

1. Why does the author use the remarks about Chief and Copernicus in paragraph 1?
A.To illustrate the reaction from members in line.B.To encourage those who want to cut in line.
C.To praise the behavior of cutting in line.D.To provide advice which helps cut in line.
2. Which of the following is not a wise way to cut in line?
A.Giving the members in line money.B.Stating the emergency of the event.
C.Considering the regularity of the situation.D.Defending the right of cutting in line.
3. What is the best title for the text?
A.Be Patient When Queuing.B.Acceptable Ways to Cut in Line.
C.Time and Tides Waits for No Man.D.Special Rights under Emergency.

3 . Two years ago, I came across a collection of dusty photos. I looked to see if there were any names on the backs. I thought: if these were mine, or my family’s, I’d want someone to return them to me. So I made it my goal to do so for others.

I’ve since visited secondhand shops weekly, and have collected more than 50,000 of these items such as photographs, memory cards and undeveloped films-everything you can name it.

I’ve also set up a social media account to help reunite items with their owners or other family members. The first item I posted was a tape of a family holiday. It was a video of two parents and a son of university age on a trip in the 90s — the son was wearing a T-shirt with the words “Wesleyan swimming” on it.

My social media followers contacted athletic departments in universities across the US and asked swimming coaches from the 90s if they recognised the student. After just a few days, someone identified him and we tracked him down on social media. He couldn’t believe it and was happy to be reunited with the tape.

People are often quite emotional when we get in touch-most of these items are lost after a house move or a family death. I found a box containing two rolls of film at a shop in New York. Inside the box was a note with the time 1943 and the name “Friedmann”. One of my followers found a family named Friedmann. They confirmed their ancestors that were in the photographs.

I have some rules. I should remove their posts if the family does not want their memories online. Every family has been grateful to have their memories back. Only a Martin family asked for all of their memories to be removed online. I removed it, but they were still extremely grateful to me for returning them.

I’d love to create a building to hold all these memories. I want every photo and every video to be digitised so they can be preserved online. I’m bringing together a team to return the photos to their owners. People are very interested in the feelgood stories that come out of this and I do, too.

1. Why could the son be found after just a few days?
A.His T-shirt gave specific information.
B.He was popular in swimming competitions.
C.His coach identified him on the author’s post.
D.The author had social media followers all over the US.
2. What did the author think of Martin family’s request?
A.It’s selfish.B.It’s valuable.
C.It’s embarrassing.D.It’s understandable.
3. What is the best title for the text?
A.Preserving Memories with Photos.
B.Tracking Photos Down on Social Media.
C.Reuniting Families with Their Lost Photos.
D.Collecting Photos in the Secondhand Stores.

5 . Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient — to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小) by greater needs: the need to protect from bad news or to keep a promise of secrecy; to advance the public interest.

What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should the doctor lie to him that he is ill, or minimize seriousness of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?

Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patient’s own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones.

Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroying their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate (恶化) faster, perhaps even commit suicide.

But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians; a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanly informed, helps patients deal with illness: help them bear pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after operation.

There is great need to discuss this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, people may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious results seem avoidable only through deception (欺骗). Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

1. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.All patients really want to know the truth of their condition.
B.Doctors are trained to tell lies about their patients’ diseases.
C.Opinions are divided about professional lies.
D.No discussion is needed about professional lies.
2. For the case mentioned in paragraph 2, most doctors will ____.
A.choose to lie to him about his condition at that moment
B.tell the patient the truth as soon as possible
C.report his disease to the company where he works
D.advise him to shorten the family vacation
3. What does the underlined part “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The doctors.B.The patients.C.The government.D.The public.
4. From the passage, we can learn that the author’s attitude to professional deception is _____.
A.supportiveB.opposedC.indifferentD.shocked

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Have you heard an old saying “The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence”? It means other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live. “Let’s go to KFC for dinner and then watch some Japanese cartoons!” We all know it: more and more Chinese kids love American and Japanese food and movies. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring(忽视)Chinese culture and, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.

Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with the Mid-Autumn Festival. China has lots of cool things in its culture: calligraphy, Beijing Opera, quick meals on the streets, and even Jay Chou! And let’s not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best: its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.

It’s good to enjoy other cultures and learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It’s good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn’t always greener.

Although some people become worried about that, I don’t think they should. Will we get more powerful without learning from other countries? Will Chinese people live more happily without American fast food? Besides, it’s fun to learn about different cultures. Chinese kids can learn about other cultures and have fun, but they also need to learn more about their own culture. Be proud of Chinese culture and of being Chinese!

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It's quite impressive to see Canada geese flying into the clouds. They live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal. They never forget their first home. No one knows this more than my family.

In 2000, when I was seven, my parents and I came back from a T-ball game one late spring afternoon. To our surprise, two adult geese and a baby goose were in our driveway (车库前的私 人车道).The adults were shocked by us and flew away, but their baby was too young to fly and couldn't follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid contact with the baby, hoping he could join his parents.

Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen. It was clear that the baby needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we brought him onto our back porch (门廊)and set up a wire fence to enclose and protect him.

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning. And then another morning. And another. Each day, we tried eagerly to get the baby back to his parents, who kept coming to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. The baby goose had clearly decided we were his new family and we gave him a name - Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫)noise, nonstop.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed. Peeper slept on our back porch in typical goose fashion. Every day, my dad would clear his droppings with water and throw him up into the air, so he could fly a loop around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

Paragraph 1:

One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop.

9 . Places of Interest in Wales

Conway: On the north Wales coast, Conway is where you’ll find the world’s smallest house, as well as a much larger “house”,Conway Castle, which was built in the 13th century.

Anglesey: This beautiful island is joined to the rest of north Wales by a road bridge and a railway bridge, and it’s just a short drive from Conway. Here you can visit the village of Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll which has the strangest name in Europe. Don’t miss the station. The sign runs the complete length of the platform! Also on Anglesey is Beaumaris Castle, which was started in the 13th century and to this day remains unfinished.

Sonwdonia: Just a couple of hours’ drive from Beaumaris is the Snowdonia mountain range, which takes its name from the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon. From there, visit the famous Swallow Falls at nearby BetwsyCoed.

Portmeirion: In 1925 Clough WilliamsEllis bought an attractive piece of Welsh land for less than £5,000. He then set out to show the world how a naturally beautiful castle could be built without being damaged and spent the next 50 years building the town of Portmeirion with a style of Italy.
