1 . The stuff (要素) of science fiction has landed on our plates. Meat grown in a lab, instead of inside the body of an animal, has been approved for sale for the first time. The US startup took a biopsy (细胞活组织切片) of cells from a live chicken, bathed them in a nutrient medium and grew them in a bioreactor (生物反应器), where they grew until the meat was harvested.
Cultured meat is eye catching technology. But it is also an over engineered solution to a problem that we can solve by changing our diets. If we simply stopped eating meat, or ate it far less often, then there would be no need for either harmful animal agriculture or meat grown in a lab.
The cultured meat industry rests on a view of human beings as greedy and incapable of change. But the coronavirus pandemic has shown that we are able to make enormous changes to our behaviour when faced with crisis.
The startups growing meat in labs might be motivated by noble intentions: to save animals and save the planet. But giant meat producers such as Cargill and Tyson are already investing heavily in cultured protein. Who knows which companies will run the industry in decades to come.
If we move into a world where eating meat remains normal but killing animals is forbidden, we will become ever more dependent on remote companies with highly specialized technology to meet our basic needs. But we don’t have to. We can just choose to eat less meat. That’s where real power lies-not in using this new technology but in being prepared to change our behaviour.

2 . There are many ways in which human cloning is expected to benefit mankind. Below is a list that is far from completion (完成).
Dr. Richard Seed, one of the leading proponents (支持者) of human cloning technology, suggests that it may someday be possible to slow the aging process because of what we learn from cloning.
Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and several other developed countries.
There has been a breakthrough in the research on human stem cells. Embryonic (胚胎的) stem cells can be grown to produce organs to repair or replace damaged ones. Skin for burned victims, brain cells for the brain damaged, hearts, lungs, livers and kidneys could be produced. By combining this technology with human cloning technology, it may be possible to produce needed organs for suffering people that will be free of rejection by their immune systems. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart failure and other problems may be made curable if human cloning and its technology are not banned.
Despite getting a fair amount of publicity in the news, current treatments for infertility (不生育), in terms of percentages, are not very successful. One estimate is that current infertility treatments are less than 10 percent successful. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for more infertile couples to have children than ever before.
1. How can cloning technology help us according to Dr. Richard Seed?A.It can help us stay energetic. | B.It can make us live long. |
C.It can cure us of many illnesses. | D.It can free us from pollution. |
A.Cancer. | B.Alzheimer’s disease. | C.Heart disease. | D.Parkinson’s disease. |
A.Human cloning could help infertile couples to have children. |
B.Scientists treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy hearts. |
C.Human cloning and its technology are not banned by all countries. |
D.Organs produced by human cloning technology still suffer rejection. |
A.Shortcomings of human cloning. | B.Benefits of human cloning. |
C.Different ways of human cloning. | D.The development of human cloning. |
The summer before I left home to university, I had a very pleasant and meaningful talk with my dad about the old days that we spent together. We came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My memory told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
A month later, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there.
The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.
We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fall. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle firmly for me.

6 . Siddharth Mandala, 18, the inventor of ElectroShoe, which is a device that enables the user to electrocute (电击) an offender and alarm the nearby police station and friends of their location, using Wi-Fi, has been a hit.
This inventor was inspired into action when he accompanied his mother to the Nirbhaya rallies (集会) in Hyderabad at 12. The streets, thick with anger, had his mind ticking, “There had to be a better way. Women may forget to carry pepper spray or other self-defence tools, but everyone puts on shoes.”
It took him two years to come up with the model, using social media to reach out to those who could help him. Mandala was awarded a letter of appreciation by the government of Telangana for his invention in May 2017.
Siddharth believes technology can truly change the quality of our lives. He launched Cognizance Welfare Initiative (CWI) two years ago to teach coding to students and helped them build micro-controller projects such as a GPS tracking system to locate their friends in dangerous areas.
The Hyderabad-based CWI inspires children to use science to enable them to create solutions for their communities, works to spread awareness about violence and conducts book drives, educates communities on water pollution and helps children improve their reading skills. So far CWI has taught over 500 children and plans to expand to two more villages. Mandala is now working with his friends on developing a programme to identify malignant melanoma (恶性黑素瘤) with a phone camera.

In her small town, Emma was known for her love and respect for all living creatures, and she believed that humans and animals should coexist peacefully and harmoniously. One day, while hiking in the nearby woods, Emma spotted a wounded (受伤的) deer caught in a hunter's trap. Without hesitation, she carefully freed the deer and nursed it back to health.
Over the next few weeks, Emma devoted her time and energy to caring for the deer. She visited it every day after school, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables. She carefully examined its wounds, applying some medicine to help it get better and prevent infection. As the days went by, the deer began to regain its strength, and Emma was overjoyed to see it stand on its legs once again.
Emma also took the time to learn about deer behavior and their natural habitat. She researched the best foods to feed the deer and created a comfortable place for it to rest in during the day. She even made a small water fountain to ensure that the deer had access to clean drinking water.
As the weeks turned into months. Emma watched as the deer grew stronger and more confident. It would often follow her around the backyard, nudging (轻推) her playfully with its nose. Emma felt a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that she had played a part in saving this beautiful creature's life.
One sunny afternoon, as Emma sat in her backyard reading a book, she heard a familiar sound. She looked up and saw the deer standing near her, looking at her with gentle eyes. It was clear that the deer had fully recovered and was ready to return to the wild.
Emma felt a sense of sadness but also knew that it was time for the deer to go back to its natural habitat. She opened the gate and watched as the deer bounded away, disappearing into the forest. From that day on, Emma continued to care for animals in need, knowing that she had made a difference in the life of at least one creature.
