2 . How to Help Kids Save Our Oceans and Be Environmental Heroes
The world’s oceans benefit us in many different ways.
●Do a local clean-up
Beach, lake or river clean-ups are a great way to get children involved in keeping our environment free from rubbish. Even a local park will benefit from a clean-up. Less trash in the environment in general is less trash that could get washed away in our bodies of water. Gather the family to pick up rubbish together.
●Reuse disposed (废弃的) items
A great way to get kids involved in recycling is to encourage them to find other uses for old items. Instead of throwing something away, help them turn it into art!
●
More than 70 percent of the plastic we use does not get recycled, and a lot of this plastic waste is swept into our oceans. Cutting down on plastic use is important if we are to protect our oceans.
Often, pre-packaged fruits and vegetables at supermarkets are a big source of single-use plastic. Getting kids interested in growing their own food is a fun and educational way to cut down on plastic use and shorten supply chains of foods. Besides, educate kids to use as little plastic as possible.
●Eat sustainably sourced fish
A.Reduce plastic use |
B.Yet, our oceans are being heavily polluted |
C.Plastic is a material produced from oil by a chemical process |
D.The kids will really see the difference it makes to an area that they play in |

Jim is one of my close friend. Two months ago, his mother buy a computer for him as a birthday present. She hoped Jim will study hard under the help of the computer. To his surprise, Jim just wasted plenty of time play computer games every day. Now she regrets buying the computer. As matter of fact, a computer can do a lot of everyday jobs for us. It is wide used in factories, hospitals, banks and so on. Many computer scientists are now trying to make the computer to “think” like a man. In my opinion, the key is what we should use it wisely.
4 . To be fair, the Aike T electric scooter (滑板车) is an interesting and innovative ride by itself. And the fact that its the world’s first USB-C enabled electric scooter is icing on the cake.
Its first great feature is that impressive battery. Not only is it removable, which is a nice bonus for anyone that doesn’t want to carry a 42 lb (19 kg) scooter around to find a plug, but the battery is also rechargeable via a USB-C charger, just like the kind you likely already use to charge your laptop and other devices. Both the battery and the scooter have a USB-C port, so you don’t have to pull the battery out to charge it. Amazingly, if your laptop or phone is low on juice then you can charge up your devices straight from the scooter’s battery.
Braking (制动) is done with a combination of a mechanical brake and electric braking. If you get caught in a rain or have to ride through ponding areas, you can be confident that the scooter can take it. The scooter includes GPS anti-theft protection, and there’s even keyless smart-lock that uses your phone to unlock the scooter. Next, consider the physical design features. The side- supported wheels don’t just look cool, they also make it easier to change a tire. You’re unlikely to need to do that often, thought since those tires are less likely to get flat.
If there’s any downside to the Aike T electric scooter, it’s the lack of shock absorption. So you’re going to fed bumps(颠簸) like sidewalk cracks and cobblestones. Apart from that, the scooter can’t run faster than 20 mph (32 km/h), which is a far cry from the faster electric scooters we’ve tested.
While it’s a high end electric scooter that will last a lot longer, it certainly costs more than a budget scooter. So make your choice based on your own needs.

My name is Bronson Layton. I am 23 years old, I am a college student, and I have a story that I feel should be shared with the world.
I come from a family that had never had a single record of ancestry with autism (自闭症), until the day I was born. When I was two years old, my parents were still getting used to the lifestyle of raising a normal kid, but what they had noticed was what they considered “out of the ordinary” behavior. Whatever toys I played with, I placed them in a straight line. When I was not satisfied, I got angry easily.
Soon after my parents noticed these signs, they took me to a child expert, who eventually informed them that I was diagnosed (诊断) with a type of autism, a disorder that delays the nervous growth of a child’s brain.
My diagnosis was in 1999, a time when autism was still not commonly understood and was still being observed. At first, my parents were shocked at the news from an expert that I was going to grow up blind, but they (and I) were not prepared for how the following events would completely change our lives forever.
As I got older, I began to change from keeping myself alone to getting with other kids once I entered public school in first grade. I noticed how the other kids were able to answer questions in class a lot faster than I could understand. Because of my slow thinking, it took me two minutes to come up with an answer. From that year on, I received special accommodations for my studies, such as sitting in front of the class to read the blackboard better, and taking longer time on tests.

6 . For many buyers, electric vehicles (EVs) are simply too expensive, their range is too limited, and charging them isn’t as quick and convenient as refueling at the gas stations. All these limitations have to do with the lithium-ion batteries (锂电池) that power the vehicles. They’re costly, heavy, and quick to run out of juice. To make matters worse, the batteries rely on liquid electrolytes (电解质) that can burn during crashes.
Making electric cars more competitive with gas-powered ones will require a breakthrough battery that overcomes those shortcomings. That, at least, is the argument of Jagdeep Singh, chief executive of QuantumScape, a Silicon Valley startup that claims to have developed just such a technology. The company says it did so by solving a chemistry puzzle: how to use lithium to boost the amount of energy that can be packed into a battery without posing a routine risk of fire or otherwise weakening performance. The company says it achieved this by developing a solid version of the flammable (易燃的) liquid electrolyte.
In an online presentation in December, QuantumScape displayed a series of charts showing that a single-layer lab version of the battery can be charged to more than 80% of its capacity in 15 minutes, last for hundreds of thousands of miles, and work fine at freezing temperatures. The company expects the batteries to be able to boost electric vehicles’ range by more than 80%: a car that can go 250 miles on a single charge today could drive 450 miles instead.
Indeed, the battery field is littered with examples of startups that promised breakthrough technologies but ultimately failed. And the challenges ahead of QuantumScape are enormous, particularly when it comes to turning its samples into commercial products that can be produced cheaply.
If the company succeeded, it could transform the EV marketplace. Cutting costs, boosting the range, and making charging convenient enough could broaden demand beyond people who can afford charging ports at home, and ease the anxieties of those who fear being left on longer trips.

7 . A 28-year-old young man, Nilay Agarwal, says that he had always dreamed of doing his bit for removing the root of hunger but it was only after a life-changing incident that he dared to step out of his comfort zone to do something about it.
In 2018, Nilay lost a friend, young and full of potential, due to a car accident, which made him realize how lucky he was to be here with all the dreams that he had. So he decided not to waste a single moment and started contributing his time to a noble cause.
With zero knowledge about setting up a social organization, Nilay simply made a few cookies and distributed them in a nearby welfare organization at first. Employing social media, he uploaded a video of the activity online. “ At first, people laughed at me. They didn’t believe I was serious or had any long-term plans. But I knew I was going to go on until my actions effected a change,” he says.
When one after the other similar deeds by this lone fighter were noticed, people gave credence to his efforts and started coming forward to join him. Sankalp Tandon, one of Nilay’s acquaintances, decided to help him upon seeing his work. Afterwards the Vishalakshi Foundation was set up in memory of his friend. Then it developed its first programme — the Project Hunger.
As he says, no one has a stronger will than the youth of a country. Considering this as his only resource, he started encouraging students of Delhi University to join the programme. He first appointed some leaders in 22 colleges. They then went on reaching out to others to join the organization and form volunteer groups in their colleges. Meanwhile, online crowdfunding(众筹) platforms assisted with funding campaigns that could support the upscaling (升级) of operation. In 2020, the organization was recognized by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel for its widespread efforts.

10 . A new World Bank report warns that children who do not get enough good food in the first two years of life suffer lasting damage. They may be underdeveloped or under-weight. They may suffer from poor health or limited intelligence. Besides, these children are more likely to drop out of school and earn less money as adults.
The report notes that too little food is not the only cause of poor nutrition. Many children who live in homes with plenty of food suffer for other reasons.
The study also connects malnutrition (营养不良) to economic growth in poor countries. A lack of nutrition in early childhood can cost developing nations up to three percent of their yearly earnings. Many of these countries have same economic problems that are growing at a rate of two to three percent yearly. The study suggests that poor countries could possibly double their economic growth if they improved nutrition.
Africa and South Asia are affected the most by poor nutrition. The study says about half of all children in India do not get enough good food. The World Bank study also notes that rates of malnutrition in South Asia are almost double those in central and southern Africa. . Other parts of the world are also seriously affected, including Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Guatemala and Peru.
The study recommends that developing countries change their ways to deal with malnutrition. Instead of directly providing food, the study suggests educational programs in health and nutrition for mothers with young babies. It also recommends cleaner living conditions and improvements in health care.
The World Bank nutrition specialist Meera Shekar said the period of life between pregnancy (怀孕) and two years is very important. Governments should take direct action to improve nutrition for children during this period.
