1 . Phone addiction has a number of negative effects. Here are some ways to remove it.

In order not to look at your phone as soon as you wake up in the morning, place your phone in another room or your coat pocket. Then spend at least the first 30 minutes of your day building good habits.     1

Studies show that on average we use the phone 50 to 150 times a day. So you should do something meaningful to avoid looking at it. You could do some reading, do a crossword puzzle or even something as simple as a walk in the yard.     2

One of the main problems with smart phones is that you worry if you don't check your phone regularly, you may miss out on something important, such as invitations to events or work emails.     3     When someone has something important to tell you, they may give you a call. Therefore, it is necessary to stay away from your phone sometimes.

What's going on in the real world, right in front of you, is almost always more important than what is happening online. Put away your phone when you are with someone important.     4     For example, having dinner with friends will become awkward when you always check your phone.

5     That is because being addicted to the phone before going to bed greatly influences your sleep. This can harm your physical and mental health in the long run. Therefore, make it a rule to stop using your phone an hour before you go to sleep.

A.Ask your friends or family for help.
B.However, it is almost never the case.
C.Anything helping you get rid of your phone is OK.
D.Your smart phone has almost every tool that you need.
E.A good rest should be more important than your phone at night.
F.This could be exercise like a morning run or cooking a good breakfast.
G.Many relationships have suffered because of our addiction to the phone.

2 . Later this month, the city center of London will be car-free for the day. More than 12 miles of roads in the capital will be closed off from vehicles. Though the car-free day is largely symbolic, the government expects people can walk or ride bikes more often instead of driving cars after the activity.

Besides London, there are other cities around the world doing the same thing. Oslo, Paris and Montreal have experimented with a variety of ways to ban cars. Barcelona has created some superblocks as part of a plan to limit vehicles in 70 percent of the city’s streets. Leaders in some US cities are also exploring plans to extremely cut down on cars and promote walking, bikes and other forms of travel.

Some people point out cars block city streets while producing harmful chemicals into the air, creating noise pollution and endangering people around them. Cars take up a huge amount of room that could be used to create more enjoyable living space for people. So, limiting the number of drivers on the road is also seen as a major step in fighting climate change.

However, others say the plans of car-free areas are unrealistic, considering the large amount of money spent on the basic systems and services and public transportation that would be required to make them successful. Some argue they would unfairly benefit rich people who have enough money to live in city centers while making travel more difficult for lessaffluentpeople in the suburbs.

Most of the early success stories of car-free areas have taken place in dense (密集的)European cities that were designed before cars existed, which leads to a question -- whether the idea would work in modern cities that were built to provide space for cars. Therefore, large-scale changes that would make car-free city living possible would likely take years to take place. And at each step, public sentiment (情绪)and political will must be behind the movement.

1. Several cities are mentioned in Paragraph 2 to show________.
A.people around the world are in favor of car-free cities.
B.car-free cities have already appeared in large numbers.
C.governments have a major effect on car-free city plans.
D.many cities are making efforts to reduce cars in the streets.
2. What does the underlined word “affluent” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Healthy.B.Wealthy.C.Famous.D.Educated.
3. What is the author's attitude towards the development of car-free cities?
A.Positive.B.Negative.C.Objective.D.Doubtful.

3 . Sleep plays an important part in repairing the body and keeping us healthy, but with all of the demands of modern living, getting a good night's sleep can be a challenge. Using electronic products such as computers and smartphones has been considered to disturb sleep because of the blue light given off by their LED displays. Yet, new research has shown that screen time alone may not be as harmful as we thought before.

Scientists at the University of Manchester measured the impact of colored light on the sleep patterns of mice to learn more about how different colors act on the body. They said that twilight (暮色) could provide a physical signal to tell you when to sleep. So, using brighter, warmer lights in the day and cooler lights in the evening could be better for people's health.

“Melanopsin (黑视蛋白) makes people easily feel the difference of brightness. Researchers try to change the impacts of light on sleep by adjusting the brightness signals identified by melanopsin,” said Dr Tim Brown, a senior lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences and one of the study's authors. So not being exposed to blue light and staring at your electronic products for a long time could really help adjust your sleep.”

However, reducing brightness may be more helpful than simply controlling the amount of blue light. And blue light remover that warms up the screens of computers or smartphones by increasing yellow light could actually be harmful to sleep. Harvard Medical School links exposure (接触) to blue light at night to cancer and heart disease. The health warnings about blue light run deeper than disturbed sleep. Though sunlight is the main source of blue light, the way we stare at computers and smartphones for long periods gives cause for concern.

1. Why did scientists conduct the research according to Paragraph 2?
A.To know people's screen using habits.
B.To test the effects of electronic products on sleep patterns.
C.To find out the influence of colored light on physical health.
D.To change people’s negative feelings toward colored light.
2. What is the main feature of melanopsin?
A.It avoids lots of harm to our eyes.
B.It provides the most suitable light.
C.It makes people see things clearly.
D.It presents information of brightness changes.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.More blue light at night harms people’s skin.
B.Sunlight provides people with helpful blue light.
C.Using yellow light on the screen could protect people’s eyes.
D.Turning down screen brightness before sleep can reduce health risks.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Health.B.Business.C.Technology.D.Entertainment.

9 . Japan has announced emergency Covid measures in Tokyo and three other areas in order to control rising infections (传染病), just three months before the country is set to host the Olympics. The government said the state of emergency — set to last for about two weeks — would be “short and powerful”. Under the measures, bars will be required to close and big sporting events will be held without audience. The government has insisted that the Olympics will go ahead in July.

Prime minister Yoshihide Suga announced the measures on Friday, saying they would begin on Sunday and remain in place until 11 May. In addition to to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo will be affected. It has marked the third state of emergency in japan since the pandemic began. “I sincerely apologize for causing trouble for many people again,” he said. “It is feared that infection in major cities will spread across the whole country if we take no measures.”

Under the rules, major facilities like department stores will close, as well as restaurants, bars, and KTV rooms serving alcohol. Restaurants that do not serve alcohol are being told to close early, and companies are being asked to make arrangements for people to work remotely. Schools will remain open. Tokyo 2020 president Seiko Hashimoto said at a news conference on Friday that organizers were not considering canceling the event. “I hope the coronavirus situation improves with the prevention measures the government, Tokyo, and other regional governments have put into place,” she said. “We, as Tokyo 2020, continue to wish for the swift return to normal and will continue to work closely to make sure a safe and secure Olympics can happen.”

10 . In many respects one could call John Beltzer the world's most successful songwriter. Every song that he writes is guaranteed to be a real hit not on the popularity charts, but in a child’s heart. The reason for this is that every song that Beltzer writes is for a seriously ill child. The songs never fail to make the children smile and to raise their spirits. They also play them over and over. This means more by far to Beltzer than being ranked high on the popularity charts.

Thirty-eight year old Beltzer is the founder and president of Songs of Love, a nonprofit group. This group combines the volunteer efforts of musicians, songwriters, singers, and studio technicians to create unique, happy songs that reflect a child's personality.

Beltzer believes that music is very healing. When an adult listens to a favorite song, it makes him feel good: thus when a little child listens to a song written just for him, the result is very uplifting. Since its founding in 1996, Songs of Love has been responsible for the composition, taping and sending more than 780 songs to children in life-threatening conditions, all for free.

Unmarried with no children of his own, Beltzer had never thought much about writing songs for children. He says that one day while he was walking down the street the idea came to him and he instantly felt that he could make a success of it. He went home and called St Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He told them he wanted to write songs for seriously ill children, and wrote six songs in four days. Upon receiving the songs, the hospital called him with high praise. Soon after that the mother of a little girl with cancer called him to thank him and then the little girl herself did so. At that point he knew that this was his “calling”.

As is true with most charitable ventures, Songs of Love is almost always in need of money. To help in this respect, Beltzer has moved back home to live with his retired parents, who also help support his work. His long-term goal is to offer Songs of Love to patients of all ages, including nursing home residents and the mentally ill. Among other efforts to raise money, Beltzer sells CDs and tapes, expecting much bigger sales. Meanwhile, Beltzer himself continues to be the most productive writer in Songs of Love, making sure that all requests for songs written for critically ill children will be met.

1. Why is John Beltzer, to some extent, called the world's most successful songwriter?
A.Every song he composes tends to be a hit.
B.All songs are played over and over again.
C.His songs are intended specially for those unlucky children.
D.He as well as his songs always enjoys a grand popularity.
2. Which word can replace the underlined word “uplifting” in paragraph 3?
A.Satisfactory.B.Adequate.
C.Inspirational.D.Appropriate.
3. What can we infer from the whole passage?
A.Beltzer had had the idea of writing songs for seriously ill children long before actually doing so.
B.The hospital in Tennessee didn't respond to Beltzer's request immediately and positively.
C.Song writing is the only source of income for Songs of Love.
D.Running charitable activities makes Beltzer's finance really tight.
4. Which of the following words can best describe John Beltzer?
A.Social and intelligent.B.Compassionate and considerate.
C.Conventional and patient.D.Confident and ambitious.
