1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. Remarkably, he could read; yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve had been failing since first grade. Sadly, no one noticed him until Miss White, a smiling, young, beautiful redhead.

Steve was immediately attracted by Miss White at the first sight! Yet, still he failed. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss White. In the middle of the first semester, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see if he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared about him. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.

One day, Miss White’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve!” Alarmed, he turned to look at her. “Pay attention!”

“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…” She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face. “…. The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”

She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.

After that, Steve still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.

“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.

“Give yourself a chance! Don’t give up on your life!” Nothing swayed him. “Steve! Please! I care about you!”

Wow! Suddenly, Steve got if!!! Someone cared about him? Someone, CARED

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了为什么要鼓励青少年玩耍以及如何鼓励青少年玩耍。

3 . Encourage Your Teens to Play More

Parents are generally aware of the importance of play for younger kids. But when kids hit the teen stage, it can be confusing to know what play looks like because kids of this age don’t engage in“play“the way younger kids do. Obviously, play changes as kids grow. And parents begin to wonder whether they should continue to encourage their teens to play.     1

Playfulness doesn’t go away in childhood; creativity is just as important in adolescence. Adolescence is a time of rapid brain development and self-inquiry — a stage where people can figure out who they are and where the opportunity to stretch in different directions really builds intelligence.     2     Furthermore, play allows people to mess up and recover and learn how to do better next time.

3    A 2011 article in the American Journal of Play evaluated the decline of play and the rise of mental health issues in adolescents. It noted that as play declined, instances of depression, anxiety, and suicide increased. Research found that play can have a positive impact on kids’mental health by helping them to learn to make decisions, solve problems, exhibit self-control, and follow rules.

How to Encourage Play in Teens? Teens feel the tension of being pulled toward adulthood while also wanting to regress (退回) toward childhood.    4     So, one thing adults can do is model vulnerability (脆弱)and playfulness. When parents are willing to engage with teens in play, it can go a long way in encouraging them.    5    There are so many kids who are highly scheduled with lots of activities, and often what kids really need is a little downtime.

A.Mental health is another benefit of play for teens.
B.When engaged in play, teens typically feel joyful.
C.In the end, play will look different from teen to teen.
D.Sometimes it’s like they need permission to be silly again.
E.In addition, parents can offer up raw materials and the time and space to use them.
F.During this period, play can help teens grow and discover things about themselves.
G.Actually, people of all ages benefit from play, including and especially teenagers.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。

It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait?”

In the summer of 2015, Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a homeless man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night. Peterson, 28. would pass the guy on his way to his job, but they never spoke . What could they possibly have in common?

One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading a book, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book’s compassionate message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.

In that first conversation, Peterson learned the man’ s name was Faris. He’d moved to California to pursue a care er in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade.

“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, had overgrown finger nails, probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.”And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes.

Peterson’s connection with Faris led him to form Faces In the Community(FIC), a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the portraits sign atured by both subject and artist for a few thousand dollars, splitting the proceeds(收入) and putting half into what he calls a”love account”for his model. He then helps people use the money to get back on their feet. Of course, Faris was the first to benefit from FIC.

7 . Dreaming appears to have little connection to work. However, new research shows that when dreams are first recalled, people often draw connections between their dreams and waking lives, and the connections they draw alter how they think, feel and act at work.

The team performed the studies that collectively captured approximately 5,000 morning reports of dream recall among full-time employees. The researchers issued morning field study, a single-day morning-to-afternoon study, and a twoweek experience sampling study.

“An awe-inspiring dream is highly impactful and memorable, often involving extraordinary experiences or interactions. For example, we arrive at work shortly after interacting with deceased (逝去的) loved ones, narrowly escaping or performing arts of immeasurable ability,” Belinda, the chief of the study, said. “Regardless of our personal beliefs about dreams, these experiences bleed into and affect our waking lives, including how productive we are at work.”

Say you recall an awe-inspiring dream in the morning, and, then later in the afternoon, your boss tells you to conduct 10 more interviews than you were expecting to do. You might now think that it’s not that big a deal because your awe-inspiring dream just put everything into perspective. You have a greater realization that there’s a bigger world out there and you’re just part of it or that you’re connected to everything.

“So, get a good night’s sleep for waking wonder!” Belinda added. Studies show that dreams occur in all stages of sleep and are impactful regardless of sleep habits. However, the most vivid dreams — those most likely to have meaning and create waking wander — occur during REM sleep. Because REM sleep takes place late in a given sleep cycle, getting sufficient, high-quality sleep will help you get the most out of your dreams. Sleep tracking devices can indicate when and how much time you spend in REM sleep, which help improve sleep schedules to increase the chance of having awe-inspiring dreams. For both managers and employees, how much or how well people slept really means a lot, which can increase productivity at work.

1. What is paragraph 2 intended to explain?
A.Why a dream is recorded.B.How the study is conducted.
C.What the study revealed.D.Who joined in the research.
2. Which is an awe-inspiring dream according to paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.Failing a tough test.B.Meeting with strangers.
C.Being stuck in a traffic accident.D.Saving people like a superman.
3. What does Belinda recommend in the last paragraph?
A.Productive sleep.B.Sleep-tracking study.
C.Good REM sleep.D.Healthy living habits.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Dreams impact all sleep stages.
B.Dreams can be channeled for productivity.
C.Dreams contribute to one’s mental health.
D.Dreams are attracting greater attention worldwide.

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I want a friend!” my five-year-old’s clear blue eyes showed the pain of rejection. Noah is deaf, and the past couple of years have begun to show what the future holds for my little guy.

The first few years of his life, Noah had many friends in our neighborhood. Small children don’t talk a lot and are content to simply play. As time passed and Noah got to the age where speech and hearing were a noticeable part of “hanging out”, his friends started realizing he was different. Soon, no one came to play with my tiny son, and he too began to understand he was different. My heart has ached, and I have spent endless hours in tears, begging God to send him a friend. But the children at school come from everywhere, and none live near enough to “hang out” .

Noah recently began the heartbreaking hobby of writing and leaving mail on the porch (门廊) for his “friends” . He sticks his own toys to the notes, thinking that he can somehow make friends this way. I often have to retrieve (取回) his notes so that he thinks someone is getting his messages of friendship. His excited trips to the front porch the next morning would sometimes net him a feeling of having an unseen pen pal. It breaks my heart.

But today was different. I got a miracle—in fact, three of them.

My phone rang, and I was distracted with a long-distance friend, catching up with each other’s lives without noticing Noah slipping out the front door. It wasn’t until Nick, my sixteen-year-old son came home for lunch that Noah’s absence was known. Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.
