3 . Feed your mind
We have known about the link between what we eat and our physical health for a long time.
The Mental Health Foundation produced a report called “Feeding Minds”. The report states that the brain is a physical part of our body that needs the correct food to work properly, just like the heart. The food should contain carbohydrates (碳水化合物), vitamins and fish oil.
There is also research that shows how a good diet can improve the behavior of children and their concentration. Daniel Brown is the head teacher of Barnet School.
With regard to serious mental illnesses Jacka and Sanchez-Villegas say that eating fruit, vegetables and fish helps to prevent depression.
However, many medical professionals feel that the research by Jacka and Sanchez-Villegas is too early.
The research recommends that people eat particular food for particular mental health issues. To improve your memory, eat salmon and nuts. To improve your concentration, eat vegetables.
Overall, it seems clear that we need to eat healthy food for our mind. Although we do not fully understand the link between the two, we suggest that we choose this as an important topic for publicity.

4 . Years ago, when I was working as a sales manager, there were people on my team who were always the top-performing employees. We all knew how to get the job done, but there were a few who had interpersonal (人际的) skill s and persuasive abilities to land the sales.
To get hired, you obviously need to have the necessary skills to complete the required tasks. For example, you’re not going to be interviewed for a position in IT if you don’t know how to work a computer. These kinds of skills are called hard skills. However, many employers are looking for applicants who possess certain soft skills that relate to one’s personality, such as leadership qualities, time management abilities, and communication skills.
The biggest difference between hard and soft skills is how each type of skill is got. While hard skills are abilities learned through education or training, soft skills are more subjective personality qualities that you’re either born with or you develop through life experiences. Hard skills are the technical knowledge you gain through training that get you in the door, and soft skills are the personality qualities that make you a good employee and keep you there.
It’s easy to quantify hard skills because they’re specific and often define the basic requirements of a job. Soft skills are more difficult to measure. But they’re transferable (可转移的) across all industries.
So in addition to hiring people who know what they’re doing, employers look for applicants with a specific set of soft skills that can’t be taught as easily as hard skills. These innate (先天的) personality qualities can be developed, but it takes time, and employers would rather hi re someone who’s already there.

7 . Reading is often seen as an individual activity, but it definitely doesn’t have to be. If you join a book club, reading with others can be a positive social interaction.
In such a fast-paced world, sometimes it’s challenging to find the time and motivation to read. By joining a book club, you make a commitment to read the book of the month or the week and discuss your insights with others.
Reading is one of the most important things you can do for your brain, but reading with other people can make it even better.
Another plus is that at a book club you get together with your club members regularly, with whom you can share not only your thoughts about books but also other aspects of life.

8 . Robert Frost was born in 1874 in San Francisco, California. He spent his first 40 years in relative obscurity (默默无闻). He lived in England for a while and published his first works there.
Poetry experts point out that it’s also likely the most misinterpreted poem of all time.
The title also provides a clue that everything may not be as it seems with Frost’s poem. Readers tend to focus on the road less traveled, since Frost says it “has made all the difference”.
Frost supposedly wrote the poem for British poet Edward Thomas as a gentle joke about Thomas’ tendency to regret whatever path they took on their walks through the English countryside.
Frost apparently didn’t believe in lamenting (感到遗憾) over what might have been. Perhaps his message to the reader is simply to focus on the path you choose and make the most of it.
A.If you do that, it will make all the difference. |
B.Yet he titles his poem “The Road Not Taken”. |
C.Some people choose to take the road less traveled. |
D.“The Road Not Taken” is by far Frost’s most famous work. |
E.Then he achieved success as a poet after returning to the United States. |
F.The poem can only be correctly interpreted based on Frost’s inspiration. |
G.Read the poem carefully and you’ll find there’s not much difference between the two roads. |
9 . I recently received a statement regarding a credit card I never use. I opened the statement and noticed a charge for $1,175. As I have never had the pleasure of visiting Saskatchewan, Canada, I called the bank to report it.
“We are experiencing more calls than usual. Please stay on the line ...” What then followed was about an hour of repetitive music. I decided to call again from my mobile phone and chose the “lost or stolen card” department, while keeping my place for the fraud (欺诈) department open on my landline (座机). After half an hour, I got through to a customer service clerk (职员) called Marlene. She told me she had to ask me some verifying (验证性的) questions. My date of birth. I passed. Next, she asked how many accounts I had in this bank. I guessed one and passed. Then came the kicker, “When did you last use it?” I said, “Ages ago.” She replied, “The system does not accept this answer. You are locked out.”
I continued to wait on my other line for almost three hours until a clerk called John came on. I told him about the charge, and he asked whether anybody else had access to my credit card. I told him not to my knowledge. In addition to never having set foot in Saskatchewan, I was not even sure how to spell it. After a brief post- midnight chat, he noted the charge would be removed.
Two days later, I received a survey asking me how I enjoyed this telephone experience, whether I was okay with a bank clerk getting in touch with me and whether I would recommend this bank to my friends. I answered of course. I was just dying to say to them, “Your call is important to me. Here’s some music you can listen to while I cycle around my neighborhood.”

10 . NASA is planning to send a robot called MIRA to the International Space Station (ISS) by 2024. Its creators claim that MIRA is capable of performing operations on its own and if required, it can also be controlled remotely. Such a device could allow doctors on Earth to perform operations on astronauts in space while controlling the device remotely.
However, before performing surgical (外科的) operations on humans, MIRA will have to pass several tests on the ISS involving non-living objects. These tests will help MIRA learn to perform surgeries in low-gravity conditions, which can be quite a challenge. It is believed that in the future, MIRA could play an important role in helping out astronauts who face medical emergencies on the moon and Mars or during long-distance space travel.
The journey from the ISS to Earth can be completed in six hours. Considering the already available medicines and supplies on the ISS, this may sound like a manageable duration for many of the medical emergency cases occurring there. However, if an astronaut requires immediate medical support on a distant planet like Mars, he or she will probably die by the time help arrives.
Obviously, it is not practical to send all kinds of doctors with astronauts. Therefore, the best strategy to deal with medical emergencies is to have a robot surgeon that could perform all kinds of surgeries. MIRA could achieve this goal as it can be remotely controlled in outer space by a surgeon on Earth. For example, if an astronaut faces both nerve (神经) and bone injury on Mars, a neurosurgeon and an orthopedic surgeon on Earth can perform surgeries remotely on the injured astronaut using MIRA.
But the robot surgeon could be very useful here on Earth as well. After receiving safety approval from the Food and Drug Administration, in the coming years, we might see doctors using this robot to perform surgeries remotely on Earth. This remarkable device could make complicated (复杂的) surgeries practical in even remote and rural areas, where there could be a shortage of doctors.
