1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

To act with honesty and good faith was such a habit with Susan that she had never before thought of examining the Golden Rule:” All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” But the longer she thought about it, the more seriously she doubted that she did not always obey it. So she asked her mother about its meaning.

“It implies. ”said her mother, “in the first place, a total destruction of all selfishness (自私): for a man who loves himself better than his neighbors, can never do to others as he would have others do to him. We are bound not only to do, but to feel, toward others as we would have others feel toward us. Remember. it is much easier to blame others for their selfishness than to overcome temptation (诱惑) when we face it. ”

Susan thought carefully and seriously about what her mother had said. She told herself that she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.

It was not long after this that an opportunity to test Susan’s principles occurred. One Saturday evening when she went, as usual, to farmer Thompson’s hotel, to bring back the money for her mother’s washing for the boarders, which amounted to five pounds. She found the farmer in the yard.

He was apparently in a terrible rage (勃然大怒) with some horse dealers with whom he had been bargaining (讨价还价). He held in his hand an open handbag, full of banknotes, and didn’t see the child as she made her request, except to blame her, as usual, for troubling him when he was busy. After that, he handed her a banknote. Glad to escape so easily, Susan hurried out of the gate. and then, pausing to put the money safely in her pocket, she discovered that he had given her two banknotes instead of one. She looked around: nobody was around to see her discovery.

When Sam and I were first married, we lived in a quiet neighborhood. Across the street, there was a big house with a six-foot high hedge (树篱) that blocked all but a small path to its yard. It was clear that our neighbors wanted privacy and weren’t interested in any “neighborly” behavior. Sam had discovered that a brother and sister lived in the house. The house belonged to the sister, and the brother helped around the house with things like getting the mail and setting the rubbish cans out on the day when the rubbish-collecting truck would come. The sister and brother were both very old. And we considered them unfriendly because they had called the police when Sam played music with his band in our yard one afternoon.

Not realizing it was we who were in the wrong, we thought our neighbors caused trouble to our already difficult life. At the time, Sam and I were quite short of money. We felt sad when Christmas was around the corner. It was our first Christmas as a married couple, and we didn’t have much money to celebrate it. There were no gifts or parties. We didn’t even have any special holiday treats to share at home.

“I wish we could have enough good stuff on Christmas Day. When I was a kid, my family would always have cheese, meat, cookies, candies, etc. It always felt like a feast (盛宴) to me as a kid,” I told Sam. I understood that Christmas wasn’t all about nice things, but it just didn’t feel like Christmas with only a few foods. Sam seemed to feel the same way. “Things will get a lot better next year,” he said, trying to be cheerful.

Three weeks before Christmas, we got to know our “unfriendly” neighbor, the brother, had a bad disease and passed away. One morning after that, we noticed our neighbor—the tiny sister Mary—trying with all her strength to pull her rubbish cans to the roadside alone. She looked so weak and lonely.

It was one hot afternoon. As a cultural festival would be held in school, all the students were making preparations for it. Holden and his classmate Andrew were going to paint some flowers on a wall. They had to carry the necessary tools to the wall first. However, when they were walking across the basketball court, Holden dropped two paint cans by accident. The paint in them flew onto the floor and made it very dirty. He was shocked to see the mess he had made on the floor.

“Come on, Holden! Let’s go! Let’s go!” Andrew said anxiously. They picked up the cans and ran away. Holden thought it was lucky that no one discovered what he had done. An hour later, he passed by the basketball court alone and saw the school’s old cleaner Flex was cleaning the paint up. And he heard the principal (校长) talking with the cleaner.

“We have a meeting here tomorrow. This needs to be cleaned up immediately!” the principal told the poor old man, who was hanging his head and trying hard to clean up the mess. However, the paint was oil-based, and a large area of the floor was covered with paint; cleaning it was clearly a very difficult task.

But Flex replied he’d make sure it was ready for the next day and kept cleaning, with sweat (汗) flowing down his face. Before he left, the principal reminded Flex, “By the way, please don’t forget to cut the grass around the basketball court today.”

Holden felt terrible while watching the old man trying to make up for his mistake. But he decided to turn a blind eye to it. However, on his way home, the picture of the old man struggling to deal with his mess kept coming to his mind. It made Holden so regretful.

When he returned home, Holden decided that he needed to be responsible for his own mistake. He quickly put down his schoolbag and told his mother that he needed to go back to school

The first time I saw Jeff was when my best friend, Brian, and I were in the fourth grade. When our teacher introduced Jeff to the class, she explained that he was sick and that he might not be able to be in class all of the time.

Jeff was completely bald (秃顶的) from cancer treatments, and he wore a hat. That was one reason that he and I bonded right away. Being the tomboy that I was, I liked wearing a hat — only I wasn’t allowed to wear one in class. Jeff was allowed to wear his hat all of the time. Other than that, he was a normal friend to both Brian and me. Some things he couldn’t do as well as the other kids because he had tubes in his chest for his treatments, but we never thought of him as sick because he didn’t act that way.

The only time that we would realize that Jeff was sick was when he went for his chemotherapy treatments (化疗). We’d notice the difference, but we’d just sort of think, yeah, Jeff was not feeling really well, but then it would pass and things would be back to normal.

Jeff, Brian and I were really sports lovers, and we became best friends. We would swim, jump and run together. As fourth grade progressed, Jeff seemed to get worse. During the summer between fourth and fifth grades, we spent tons of time together outdoors, running everywhere, although it had been hard for him to finish the run. Still, he was really happy when he was able to cross the finish line, and so were we.

Before school started, Jeff told me that he would be away for a few weeks to have his operation.

“Bye, see you in a month or so,” I said to him as if nothing much was happening.

An 11-year-old boy from Texas named Shayden Walker has been struggling to make friends. His mother, Krishna Patterson, described what her son went through as a result of his disabled legs, which kept him from successfully socializing with other children.

One day last week, after struggling to find friends, Walker decided to look around his residential area to see if he could find anybody willing to be his friend. During his search, he went up to a house that belonged to a resident named Brennan Ray and asked for his help.

The boy approached Ray’s front door and started talking with the man, asking Ray if he knew of any kids in his age group around the area that he could be friends with. Walker said, “I really need some friends...Do you have any kids?”

Ray told Walker that if he went to the house that was on his right, he would find some kids he could play with. However, Walker then told Ray that the kids he was referring to were the very same kids that had often made fun of him.

When the sweet boy asked whether or not Ray had any children of his own that he could make friends with, Ray responded that he only had a two-year-old baby. Eager to find some friends, Walker then said that he liked two-year-olds and explained how he had a sister the same age he enjoyed playing with.

After this exchange, Ray asked Walker for his name, which he gave him, right before he politely said his goodbye and left. Feeling sorry for the boy, Ray decided to see how he could help Walker.

Though his father, grandmothers, uncles, aunts and cousins were all going to be there, it would be the first time for Hasan, a thoroughly pampered (娇生惯养的) child, to be without the constant mothering of his helicopter mother.

At first Hasan tried to emotionally blackmail (要挟) his mother into not going, but after she promised to bring back his favorite toys and candies, he unwillingly let her go.

When he went to drop off his mother at the airport, he had teary eyes as he wondered how he was going to survive without her for the next two weeks. Although he felt like crying like a baby, he was too embarrassed to cry out loud. But when his father hugged him, Hasan couldn’t stop crying in his arms. When they returned home, Hasan, who had always been told by his mother what to do, now had no one to tell him to wash his hands or finish his dinner. Though he was very upset about his mother’s leaving, suddenly he also realized the potential for partying, away from his mother’s discipline (管教). There would be no checks or balances. He could stay up late, eat junk food and use the Internet to his heart’s content.

Back from school, he would think, “Homework? I’ll make the most of my freedom and have some fun instead!” Hasan started to stay up till he could no longer stay awake and then woke up with a lot of difficulty at seven in the morning, barely making it to school on time. But after a few days, his partying started catching up with him. In school, he was barely managing to stay awake. Things started getting out of control. His homework remained undone. He failed his tests. He felt weak from eating only junk food.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Polly Goodman, 82-year-old, was a rich old woman. Her husband was a businessman and left her a large fortune after his death, so she had no problems supporting herself. The only problem was that her son who was a doctor busy with his work seldom had time to visit her, leaving her living lonely.

One day, Polly was walking along the beach, like she did every evening near her seaside house, when she noticed a young boy and his little sister playing there. As she was passing by them, she heard their mother calling out to them. “Corey! Daisy! Be careful! Stay away from the water!”

Polly noticed their mother resting on a bench, appearing sick and tired. The dark circles under her eyes were quite obvious, and she coughed frequently. Polly always had a desire to have a chat with someone. So she walked carefully towards the mother with a kind smile on her face.

“Hi, I’m Polly. I live by the beach.” Polly said.

The mother looked up at Polly, feeling a little surprised. The mother told Polly she was Lydia and had worked as a waitress. Lydia further said that she and her children had only recently moved to that location because her children had always wanted to see the ocean. Then Lydia stopped to cough heavily. After she calmed down, it seemed she wanted to say something, but stopped as if there was something difficult to tell. Polly did not follow up, saying goodbye and left.

When Polly went to the beach the next day, she saw the kids again, but this time their mother wasn’t with them. She observed them playing by themselves until late in the evening before heading home. The third day came and again the two kids played at the seaside until late in the evening, still without their mother s company. Then the elder brother was about to lead the sister back home. Out of curiosity and care Polly decided to follow them to their house.
