1 . How to Ask Friends if They’re Okay
Keeping in touch with your family and friends and asking how they’re going is important, but can be difficult.
·Before the chat
Begin with open-ended(开放式的)questions, rather than just telling them what you think. When people are going through something tough, often, they just want to be understood.
·How to respond
After someone’s told you about something tough they’re going through, don’t just move asking questions and checking to the next topic. Be a good listener by paying attention, you’ve understood what they’ve said.
·After your chat
After someone’s told you they’re going through a tough time, make sure to contact them. You might even want to meet with them again to chat about what’s going on at another time. Many important discussions will take place over several different chats on separate days. After talking about something important, people take time to process how they’re feeling.

2 . In the digital age, we are becoming accustomed to technological innovations, and the fact that they can have a deep impact on our lives.
The number of the smartphone adult users has reached 85 percent in the UK population. Meanwhile streaming and 5G tech are changing the way we watch movies, TV shows and sports events. But Artificial Intelligence(AI) is probably the biggest game-changer of them all. The biggest impacts have nothing to do with robots or even digital assistants like Google Home. Here are two real-world applications of AI that are already changing our world for the better
One is better medical diagnose. If you had some illness, would you want to be diagnosed by a doctor or a machine? You’d probably say the former, but in reality, the question is not that simple. Today, human expertise and AI work side by side to make faster, better diagnoses. Think of it this way—a doctor can spend an hour reading six or seven cases while AI can do six or seven thousand in seconds and then present the doctor with a range of possible medical conditions along with their related probabilities.
The other is reducing fraud( 欺 诈 ) . Fraud against big businesses seems nothing to do with us. In fact, it often ends up affecting us all, especially when insurance companies, for example, are forced to increase the premium( 保 费 ) to cover losses. AI is being used more and more in insurtech, both to speed up the claim( 索 赔 ) process and to mark possibly fraudulent claims more reliably. It does this by analysing big data trends. Faster processing and reduced fraud are good news for everyone, and that can save money for us.

3 . “They’re all in trouble,” says Kenyan ecologist Paula Kahumbu. “All elephants are in major, major trouble.”
Populations of the three species have reduced: savanna elephants, the largest land animals on the planet; forest elephants, their straight-tusked cousins; and the smaller-eared, Asian elephants, about a third of which live in fixed zone.
And we’re to blame. We’ve expanded (扩张) into elephant habitats, building homes and roads, cutting down forests and planting crops. More cruelly, people have a strong desire for ivory items that come from a dead elephant’s tusk. Although elephants are difficult to count, one study suggests that the African continent may have been home to some 26 million elephants at the beginning of the 19th century. That number has dropped sharply, becoming dangerously low in the past five decades, with the rise of poaching. Now there are as few as 415, 000 elephants in Africa. In Asia, there may likely be only 50, 000 in the wild.
Poaching doesn’t just destroy animals, says Kahumbu, CEO of the Kenyan conservation organization WildlifeDirect; it damages society. That’s why her organization monitored poaching cases in Kenyan courts, launched a campaign called Hands Off Our Elephants, and educates children on the value of wildlife. Kahumbu’s goal is great and urgent: to change “the whole national consciousness (意识) about conservation.”
Now, she’s taking her message to an international stage with Secrets of the Elephants, a four-part series on National Geographic and Disney. It explores the hidden lives of Elephants in four habitats — Asia, plus African forests, deserts, and savannas — as well as the people who are racing to save the animals.

4 . A lady was once heating up a pot of water on a gas stove with the intent of cooking pasta for her family for dinner.
A frog fell into the pot while it was sitting on the stove. Although it wasn’t his intention to be stuck in a pot of water, he didn’t try to escape. He was comfortable enough as he was.
The lady soon turned on the flame to begin boiling the water.
As the water’s temperature began to rise, the frog was able to adjust his body temperature accordingly, so he remained in the pot without trying to do anything to change the situation.
However, as the water approached its boiling point, the frog’s body temperature could no longer keep up. He finally tried to jump out of the pot, but with water temperature continuing to increase, he didn’t have it in him to make the leap.
It was too late for the frog to save himself.
Things don’t always go as planned in life, and they certainly don’t always go the way we want them to. But, no matter how bad a situation is, it’s important to be positive and face the problem head-on. You have to avoid wasting time and take appropriate action before problems get out of hand or become too much to handle.

David began with easy projects like going to work by bike, not watching TV and giving up sugar. Then he tried more difficult ones, like writing a novel in 30 days.
