1 . As a little boy, the first time I stepped into the Taekwondo dojang (跆拳道道场), I knew that I had discovered my interest. The physical training, mental focus, and spiritual development of Taekwondo drew me in, and I started a journey that would change my life.

My journey began as a White Belt filled with excitement. I was introduced to the basic skills, forms, and principles of Taekwondo. With each belt promotion (晋级), I faced new challenges. The training pushed me to test my limits and develop mental strength. Self-control became the most important part of my training. Early mornings and late nights were spent improving skills, perfecting forms, and pushing myself to the edge of tiredness. Taekwondo taught me valuable lessons, not just on the training floor but also in other areas of my life.

The path to the Black Belt was not without challenges. I experienced moments of frustration (挫折) and wanted to give up.   However, it was during these challenging times that I discovered the power of determination (决心). With the support of my teachers and friends, I found the strength to push through the hard times. Each challenge became an opportunity for growth. Dealing with these challenges strengthened my desire to become a Black Belt and inspired me to keep pushing forward.

Beyond the physical and mental aspects, the art has taught me to treat others with kindness. It has allowed me to face life’s challenges with a calm and focused mind. Taekwondo has also taught me the importance of leadership, as I now have the opportunity to guide and inspire junior students on their own journeys.

Finally, after years of training and personal growth, I stand before you as a Black Belt.   I have grown both physically and mentally, gaining valuable life skills along the way. As I continue my journey, I look forward to meeting new challenges and inspiring others.

2 . The end of the school year is often when we celebrate student growth. I know how important it is for students to look back at everything they’ve achieved.

Students don’t always remember how far they’ve come over the year.   When we praise students for their growth, we help them remember or see it themselves. This can help inspire them to continue learning. That’s why I’ve written this letter to my fifth-grade students.

Dear Students,

I can’t believe it, but we’re coming to the end of our school year. Let’s look back at all you’ve done this year.

I saw you learn to set goals, focus on learning, and find ways to deal with stress. I saw your confidence soar throughout the year. I saw you explore your interests and you taught me about the problems you care deeply about. I feel good knowing the world is in your hands!

As you look back at all of these achievements, here are a few things I hope you remember next school year.

• Lifelong learners ask questions. You’ve learned how to ask this year, so keep asking!

• Stay curious. You are so much more than what can ever be shown with a test score or a grade.

• Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Use mistakes as chances to learn and grow.

• Continue to get along well with your friends and teachers.

I can tell you how lucky I was to be your teacher.

Yours,

Lily

I encourage you to write your own letter to your students. Personalize it for each student by adding a sticky note or a handwritten message to point out specific growth areas.

6 . The Common Young Writers Program (TCYWP) welcomes high school students passionate about creative writing to join our virtual classes for two inspiring weeks dedicated to fiction writing. Students will learn and experiment with the key building blocks of fiction and be guided through the process of writing and revising their own short stories. At the end of the program, students will emerge more confident in their skills and more connected to a supportive writing community.

Taught by the editors and editorial assistants of Amherst College’s literary magazine, the summer course run Monday-Friday and are open to all high school students.

Fiction Class

Our fiction class guides students through the process of writing a short story. No previous writing experience is necessary. Through daily writing assignments and class meetings, students will learn about the key building blocks of fiction and will each complete their own short story by the end of the course. In addition to submitting daily assignments, students will meet as a group with our instructors online. Students will also meet individually with an instructor to discuss their own short stories, and will not only receive written feedback on their first drafts and final stories, but on all daily assignments.

Students should expect to spend around 3-4 hours each day on their assignments, including meeting times. Class size will be small, and we’ll break into small groups for discussions during each session.

Cost & Scholarships

The cost of the TCYWP two-week program is $725. We hope that no student will let financial difficulty prevent them from applying. Tuition waivers (学费减免) will be awarded to students with strong applications who cannot attend the program without financial assistance. In the application, students will have the opportunity to briefly describe their financial circumstances and state the amount they could afford to pay, if any, if accepted into the program. 8 . Running with Heart

My name was missing from the list. All my friends had made the cheer-leading team. But somehow my name was not there. I felt lost and embarrassed. Knowing that next year would bring a new round of try-outs, I began practicing routines on my own, hoping to become a cheerleader the next year. But my dad suggested that I get involved in running track — just to try it out for a year. I had always been the fastest kid to run a mile in gym class, so I figured that I might as well sign up for running for just one season.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into. In the first race on the track team, I took the last place. Race after race, I continued to place last and I felt my lungs burning from the effort. I wanted to quit, feeling like a failure. But my dad reminded me that once you are committed to something, you should always follow through. So I finished my first track season, placing last in every race.

The next year came. Although running was not a popular activity, like cheer-leading was at our school, I signed up again to run the long-distance races. I wanted to challenge myself. Within one year, I became the fastest female cross-country runner on our school’s team. A few years later, I placed 3rd in the Ohio State meet. Not only that, but I was offered an athletic scholarship for college.

Classmates may have laughed at me for choosing running over cheer-leading, but I didn’t care. I wasn’t running track to be cool or to prove anything to anyone else. Running made me proud of who I was. When I chose to be a runner, I chose to be true to myself. We all make that choice every day — we can be who we were born to be or we can simply follow the crowd. For me, I am happiest to be...just me.

10 . Have you ever been indecisive in the decision of what color car you like? Last November, a magazine with great influence revealed its annual list of the Best Inventions, which are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible. One of these inventions was the “color changing car”.

At the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show, a famous car company showcased a concept car that can change colors. The surface coating of this car features e-ink that is most well-known from the displays of e-readers. It contains many millions of micro-capsules, each of which contains negatively charged white pigments (颜料) and positively charged black pigments. Depending on the chosen setting, stimulation by means of an electrical field causes either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the micro-capsule, giving the car body the desired shade.

The color chosen for a car is an expression of the driver’s personalities. It offers a completely new way of changing the vehicle’s appearance in line with the driver’s preferences, the environmental conditions or even functional requirements.

A variable exterior color can contribute to energy saving and wellness in the interior. This is done by taking into account the different abilities of light and dark colors when it comes to reflecting sunlight and the associated absorption of thermal energy. Heating of the vehicle as a result of strong sunlight and high outside temperatures can be reduced by changing the exterior to a light color. In cooler weather, a dark outer skin will help the vehicle to absorb noticeably more warmth from the sun. This would reduce the amount of energy the vehicle electrical system needs, lowering the fuel or electricity consumption. In the interior, the technology could, for example, prevent the dashboard from heating up too much. In electric cars, changing the color with the weather would thus increase the range of the car. Considering the recent push for electric vehicles, this color changing technology could be a game-changer.

“Digital experiences won’t just be limited to displays in the future. There will be more and more connection between the real and virtual. With this concept car, we are bringing the car body to life, ”says Frank Weber, a member of the board of this company.

1. The concept car can change colors mainly because of ________.
A.the reflection of sunlightB.the stability of electrical field
C.the area of white and black e-inkD.the gathering of charged pigments
2. As for the color changing car, which would the author agree with?
A.It will be put into mass production in the near future.
B.It can change colors automatically according to weather.
C.It can show personalities and improve car performance.
D.It will save energy by transforming heat into electrical energy.
3. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Car Design: New ChallengesB.The Development of Car Exterior
C.Magical E-ink in Car DesignD.New Invention of Cars: Tailored Exterior
