6 . Scenery along the"sky road"

For centuries, Tibet has not been explored as much by the outside world due to its remote location, extreme climate and geographic environment. Dubbed the “sky road”, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has become the most popular and convenient way to connect Tibet to the rest of China. This 1,956-kilometer-long world-renowned railway begins in Xining and ends in Lhasa. The stunning scenery along the railway offers not only a feast for the eyes, but also a journey for the soul.

Qinghai Lake: A paradise for birdwatchers and cyclists

Dazzling like a crystal-clear gem, Qinghai Lake is the largest inland lake as well as saline lake in China. Be it the blue sky and water, the green grassland or mesmerizing landscapes---Qinghai Lake boasts great charms that are worth exploring.

Qinghai Lake is definitely a paradise for bird lovers as many different kinds of birds would fly here to breed in May and June due to the mild weather. Meanwhile, for cyclists, cycling around the lake not only allows them to enjoy the beauty of the lake view, but also while away the time.

Tips: The best time to visit the Qinghai Lake is from April to August as numerous Cole flowers blossom along the lake during that time, forming breathtaking scenery for visitors. In addition, May and June is the best season for bird lovers.

Kunlun Mountains: More than just mountains

As the train keeps moving up, a picturesque view of Kunlun Mountains appears before you.

Reputed as the holy mountains, Kunlun Mountains extend west from the Pamirs with a length of 2,500 kilometers. The 6,178-meter Yuzhu Peak is the highest of the Kunlun Mountains in Qinghai. The high peaks of the mountains are covered with snow and mist all year round, creating must-see view along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

It's worth mentioning that the Yuzhu Peak is the first sightseeing station for passengers, which allows them to get off the train and take photos outside. For climbing beginners, this peak is considered to be the ideal destination as its route requires less technique.

Hoh Xil Nature Reserve: Forbidden zone for humans

Hoh Xil, which means"green mountains"in Mongolian, is a plateau between the Kunlun and Tanggula mountain ranges, with an average altitude of 5,000 meters. Home to many wild animals, including the Tibetan antelope and the wild yak(牦牛), the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve is undoubtedly a desolate region in the northwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China.

The extensive area of alpine mountains is situated more than 4,500 meters above sea level, where sub-zero average temperatures prevail all year round. The geographic and harsh climatic conditions have made this place become the"forbidden zone for humans". This is probably one of the few places left on Earth where one could get off the beaten track and find inner peace.

Tips: As there are no signs in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, visitors often get lost here. Remember to bring a local herdsman with you or rent car to travel.

Lhasa: The start of the journey to Tibet

The final destination of the Qinghai-Tibet train trip-Lhasa, offers almost every aspect of Tibetan culture. If one must pick a name card for Lhasa, then Potala Palace is very likely to be the answer for that. No one can really say that he/she has visited Lhasa unless they have been to Potala Palace. To start a journey in Lhasa, the Potala Palace is must-see destination for travelers from home and abroad.

1. If you are a person desiring for an inner state of tranquility (安宁),which of the destinations is a must-see one along the“sky road”?

9 . The Value of Tears

Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They can leave you embarrassed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life ... and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. These create a film (薄膜) over the eye’s surface.     1

Tears relieve stress, but we lend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions. They’re afraid that once they lose control, they’ll never get it back,” explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe. “As children we were sometimes punished for shedding tears or expressing anger. As adults we still fear the consequences of showing emotions.”

Almost any emotion — good or bad, happy or sad — can cause tears. Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions.     2     It may explain why people who are afraid to cry often suffer more heart attacks than people cry more freely.

When some people become very stressed, however, they can’t cry. They may be feeling shock, anger, fear, or grief, but they repress the emotion. “Everyone has the need to cry,” says psychotherapist Vera Diamond. Sometime in therapy sessions, patients participate in crying exercise.     3     Diamond says it’s best to cry in safe, private places, like under the bed covers or in the car. That’s because many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they may be repressing their own need to cry.

In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate.     4     “But once you are safely behind closed doors, don’t just cry,” Diamond says, she suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “Once your tears have released the stress, you can begin to think of logical way to deal with the problem.”

Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.

A.Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings.
B.It is useful to reduce the nerve of our eyes and make them comfortable.
C.They practice crying so that they can get used to expressing emotion.
D.This film contains a substance that protects your eyes against infection.
E.They have brought a lot of benefits for treating patients.
F.It’s good to hold back tears during a tense business discussion.

10 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Imagine living on the edge of a vast desert, which is moving quietly closer to your village every day and covering your fields. The desert is on the move. This is called desertification.

Desertification occurs in regions close to an already existing desert. It generally arises from two related causes. The first is over-use of water in the area. There is not enough water in any case, and if it is not carefully used, disaster can follow. As time goes on, water shortages make farming more and more difficult. In some places, locals can remember local lakes and marshes which were once the homes for all kinds of fish and birds. They have been completely buried by the sand now. Farmers leave the land, and fields are replaced by deserts.

The second cause is misuse or over-use of the land. This means that the wrong crops are planted and need more water than is available. Ploughing large fields and removing bushes and trees means that the wind will blow away the soil. Once the soil is lost, it is hard to replace, and if there is rain, it has nowhere to go, and brings no benefit.

It is not only the farmers and villagers who suffer. Every spring, the skies over some of eastern cities, thousands of kilometers away from the deserts, can be darkened by sandstorms. Dust from deserts can have a great effect on weather systems. While desertification is perhaps being partly caused by global warming, these sandstorms can make global warming worse by adding to what is known as the greenhouse effect.

What can be done to slow down or stop the process of desertification? A great deal of work is already under way. Obviously first steps are to find new water sources. Tree planting can help, by providing barriers between desert and rich field. Some types of grass also hold the soil together, and stop the wind taking it. Without these efforts, it will be harder and harder to stop the world’s deserts in their tracks, and more and more farmers will give up and head for cities. The lesson to be learnt lies beneath the sand.
