1 . Whatever your resolutions are, make sure they are still going strong. Here are some famous persons’ resolutions.
Gabby Logan, TV presenter
Resolution: to drink more water
I know I should drink two litres of water a day, but it’s easy to forget, especially when it's cold out. I’m going to fill my bottle and leave it in the fridge overnight so I won’t leave home without it and check in each night to see if I’ve drunk enough.
Sarah Stirk, TV presenter
Resolution: to meditate (冥想) more
With a newborn baby, I'll need to stay really calm. Meditation will help me deal with those stresses, so I'll work on that, as well as deep breathing and getting out in nature regularly. With a positive attitude, I use diaries to help me keep my resolution.
Desirèe Henry, sprinter (短跑运动员)
Resolution: to get quality rest
As I train so hard, I need to ensure I also get enough rest. I’ve set an 8:30 pm reminder on my phone to slow down. Sometimes I can move really slowly, so I give myself plenty of time. At 10 pm, I’ll put my phone on airplane mode so I can't be disturbed.
Alex Davies, bodybuilder
Resolution: to schedule my time efficiently
I’ve taken a break from my job as an engineer to become a professional bodybuilder and train as a drone (无人机) pilot. I’ve never been busier! But without that 9-to-5 structure, I need to be focused. My top trick will be nightly diaries so I can write down my short-term goals and prepare a to-do list for the next day.

9 . Plant-based food, like beans and nuts, can provide vital nutrients (营养物) using a small part of the land required to produce meat and dairy products. By changing animal-sourced food into plant-based food, much of the remaining land could support ecosystems that absorb CO2, according to a new study.
In their study, the researchers analyzed and mapped areas where production of animal-sourced food, which requires 83% of Earth’s agricultural land, prevents the growth of native vegetation (植被), including forests. They focused on places where changing what people grow and eat could free up space for ecosystems to grow again.
According to the researchers’ findings, vegetation re-growth could make less CO2 given off, thus reducing the chance of warming the planet, if demand for meat were to decrease greatly in the coming decades along with its great land requirements. “We should think of changing our eating habits and choosing an environmentally friendly diet so that native forests can be restored (恢复),” says Hayek, leader of the study from New York University.
Technological solutions to climate change may soon appear, like machines that remove CO2, directly from the atmosphere. Placing too much confidence in these technologies could prove dangerous, however, according to the study. So restoring native vegetation on large agricultural land may be now our safest choice for removing CO2. There’s no need to bet our future only on technologies that are still not tested widely.
The benefits of cutting back on meat and dairy products reach far beyond dealing with climate change. “Reduced meat production would also be beneficial to water quality, wildlife habitat and biodiversity (生物多样性),” notes William Ripple, a professor of ecology at Oregon State University.
1. What is the new study mainly about?A.The food’s nutrition. | B.The greenhouse effect. |
C.The animal-plant relationship. | D.The agriculture-ecosystem relationship. |
A.To improve ecosystems. | B.To make a greater profit. |

10 . Wildlife experts are reporting increasing numbers of Atlantic blue fin tuna(蓝鳍金枪鱼)in the Atlantic Ocean. Atlantic blue fins are highly prized by the fishing industry. The fish can weigh up to 454 kilograms. Its meat is often used in sushi products sold at Japanese restaurants.
But the Atlantic blue fin has been a concern for wildlife experts. The species was listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Improved law enforcement appears to be helping the Atlantic blue fin recover after years of overfishing. The popular fish all but disappeared from the Gulf of Maine about 10 years ago. This year, fishers set a record by catching 30 Atlantic blue fins. One of the fish weighed 363 kilograms.
International regulators have eased the catch limits for U. S. fishermen this year, increasing the quotas (限额)by more than 180,000 kilograms. But environmental groups warn increasing the new limits will undo years of wildlife protection efforts.
Scientists have been unable to determine whether or not the Atlantic blue fin population has recovered, so any decrease in the population now is bad for fishermen in the long term.
Blue fin has been at the center of a long battle between the fishing industry and environmentalists. Fishermen can make large amounts of money from a single fish. Environmentalists seek to protect the Atlantic blue fin. Yet many consumers are willing to pay high prices to eat them.
Walt Golet, a professor of marine biology at the University of Maine, says “Probably no other fish has been more politicized than the Atlantic blue fin tuna. From an environmental point of view it's always … Let's try to back off a little bit and make sure that we always have enough fish, and on the other side, we have individuals and organizations that they're making a living out of that fish and that's kind of where the assessment and management come into play. It's kind of balancing all of those opinions and viewpoints.”
1. What do we know about the Atlantic blue fin?A.It is a treasure in fishing industry. |
B.Its meat is sold well in Japan. |
C.It is an endangered species. |
D.It has recovered after 10 years of overfishing. |
