3 . Simple Steps to Manage Your Money
Your money and how you manage it are some of the most important things in your life. They influence almost everything you do.
Set up a budget (预算).
Keep your budget on track. After tracking your spending for a month, you may see some areas where you can cut your spending.
Remember to save some money for unexpected expenses(花费). Now that you know where your money is going and you’re spending less, you can start saving. To get ahead, you need to save a percentage of your money.
Once you start managing your money, you will find out that it makes other parts of your life easier as well.
A.Start tracking your spending. |
B.Keep an eye on your pocket money. |
C.If possible, work out a spending plan. |
D.It’s never too late to save even a small amount of money. |
E.Also you’d better review your budget every few months. |

4 . Life is full of ups and downs, and you must understand that you will sometimes fail at things and it is okay when that happens. Almost all of our life we have been taught that failure is really bad, and when we fail we must drown (沉浸) ourselves in sorrow, this is an entirely wrong approach.
From a kid to an adult, you will fail at many things in life but that will only tell you about yourself. You will get to learn about your true capabilities, the things you are good at, and the things that you are bad at. We must learn to accept the process rather than run from it. Only then will we be able to achieve our goals in life.
Let me tell you something about myself, and how I faced failures in life. In my early years at school, I had trouble with some subjects. I used to get really bad grades. Sometimes I would get an F and that would make me really scared. I used to think: “What will I show my parents?” So what I used to do was cover those grades up. I would turn the F into a B just to please my parents. Well the short version of it is that it didn’t work out and eventually, I was caught doing that. I learned a lot after that. I knew that I had to accept that failure and learn from it, and something good actually came from it. I started doing better with my grades. That F turned into a B naturally, and that B turned into an A.
Whenever you face a failure, never think that you are never going to recover from this. You must think of ways to better yourself. Did you know that it took Thomas Edison 10,000 attempts to perfect the light bulb? Bill Gates failed many times, even his first company was a complete failure. All of this is proof that we must learn from our failures, not run from them!
1. What agrees with the author’s attitude to failure?A.It should be a painful process for us. | B.It is a way to tell us about our abilities. |
C.It’s better to find ways to escape from it. | D.Smart people can find ways to avoid it. |
A.To tell us we can cover our mistakes sometimes. |
B.To tell us almost everyone will make mistakes. |
C.To show the right attitudes to failure is crucial. |
D.To explain everyone will succeed with devotion. |
A.Slow but sure wins the race. | B.Good beginning is half done. |
C.Failure is the mother of success. | D.Where there is a will there is a way. |
A.Clever. | B.Careful. | C.Caring. | D.Optimistic. |

December 16, 2009 was the worst day of my mother’s life. It was the day I told her that her thirty-six-year-old daughter had stage Ⅲ breast cancer. I will never forget the look of despair in her tear-filled eyes as I told her. Seeing my mother sob uncontrollably broke my heart. It was one of the few times in my life that I saw my mother weak and vulnerable (脆弱的).
Since I had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, the doctors had a heavy-duty plan of attack to beat it, which would mean a double mastectomy, five months of chemotherapy, ovary obliteration, and five weeks of radiation. It also meant that a fiercely independent single girl who lived alone was in serious need of some help taking care of herself.
Thankfully. I was blessed with my own personal army of family, friends, and co-workers who had offered to help me out with whatever I might need, including meals and rides to doctors’ appointments. But.as grateful as I was, there really was only one person who I wanted by my side - my mom. My mother lived more than 300 miles away, but didn’t even give it a second thought. She was going to be my primary caregiver, chauffeur, personal chef, nursemaid, communications liaison, counselor, and shoulder to cry on. No one else in the world could fill her shoes. It was a job that only she could do.
The night after my first chemotherapy treatment is forever imprinted in my memory. I was never so sick in my entire life. I couldn’t even keep down a glass of water. And after-hours spent in the bathroom, I weakly lifted myself into bed, weeping, “Please, take this away from me. Please make me feel better.” At that moment, my mother crawled into bed with me, wrapped her entire body around me, and cried with me. Just like when I was a little girl, her arms enveloping me made it better.

During winter, Leo noticed that of all the houses on the block, there was one with a messy, dirty yard that looked unattended. One day, after all the snow had melted and the trees were starting to bloom (开花) just in time for spring, Leo couldn’t help but stare at his neighbor’s messy yard a little longer. The melted snow showed all the buried leaves and other trash.
He went back home and brought the tools he needed. It took Leo the entire afternoon to clear the yard. He moved the melting snow out of the pathway and swept the leaves from the ground. He also trimmed (修剪) the bushes and left them as neat as he could.
The following morning, the old woman, Abigail, opened her door with joy. She had quietly watched the young man clean up the yard the day before, much to her relief.
Abigail had not left her house in months. She relied totally on her caregiver for her basic needs and was eager to get fresh air. After sitting in her wheelchair in her front yard for a couple of minutes, her neighbors started to notice her. They walked toward her to say hi, and soon, the crowd grew.
“It’s so lovely to see you outdoors, Abigail! How have you been?” one of them asked.
“I’m so happy to be breathing some fresh air for a change. I couldn’t leave the house for months because of the snow. It was too deep, and I couldn’t afford to hi re someone to help me with it,” Abigail admitted.
“But yesterday, I saw a kind young man cleaning my yard the entire afternoon. I wanted to thank him, but I had no food to offer him because my caregiver had not arrived yet,” she shared. “He is such a blessing. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him!”
When Abigail praised the “kind young man” who helped her, they immediately knew it was Leo. The neighbors looked at each other, with guilty all over their faces. They realized they had been so blind to Abigail’s problems that no one thought to help her by cleaning her yard.
