文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了加强与兄弟姐妹关系的方法。

3 . Can siblings (兄弟姐妹) learn to get along? The answer to this question is, yes! Maintaining healthy relationships is challenging.     1     They discover that when siblings lovingly invest in their relationships, the resulting friendships are an incredible blessing.

Apply the following recommendations to strengthen your relationships with your siblings.

Recognize the significance of your role.

The role you have in your siblings’ lives is one that no one else can play. You can be a source of great good in your siblings’ lives by investing encouragement, praise and love in your relationship. Or, you can be a source of hardship by acting selfishly.     2

Appreciate your differences.

You and your siblings will have many differences, even when you grow up in the same household. Sometimes differences drive people apart, but those differences can often help you grow.     3     Instead, learn about and learn from them. As you learn to get along with your siblings, you are preparing for other relationships in the future.

    4

When conflicts arise between you and your siblings, do all you can to restore your relationship without delay. When you are wrong, ask for forgiveness for your hurtful attitudes, words, and actions. When a sibling has offended (冒犯) you and comes to ask for your forgiveness, forgive quickly.

Invest in your “enemies”.

When you give something away, you usually gain deeper appreciation from those who receive your gift. At times when you are struggling to get along with a particular brother or sister, consider giving.     5     You could also offer to help him or her with a project or a household chore (家务).

A.Spend time together.
B.Resolve conflicts quickly.
C.Don’t be afraid of your differences.
D.Discuss what you are learning in school and life.
E.But many families are finding that sibling harmony is possible.
F.Either way, your influence makes a permanent impression on your siblings.
G.Think about what you can give: time, words of praise, or gifts — things your sibling will enjoy.

5 . What time does your school start? Do you wish you could get up later every morning? You are not alone if your answer is “Yes.” In the US, many middle school students have the same wish.

In America, many schools start before 7:30 a.m.. But that may change soon. A new law has been passed in California. According to the law, middle schools should not start before 8:00 a.m.. The government hopes school children will have longer time in bed.

Many scientific studies show that teenagers are more active in the afternoon and in the evening. Simply telling them to go to bed earlier doesn’t work well. Most of them don’t get enough sleep because of bad sleeping habits and early school starting time. They need more sleep in the morning. Scientists suggest middle schools should start at 8:00 a.m. or later. Students can get well ready to learn and they won’t fall asleep in class. ________________ The change can help improve students’ grades.

While scientists are happy with the new law, many parents disagree with it. They won’t be able to send their children to school before they go to work. They also fear that later school starting time will lead to later ending time. As a result, their children will have less time to take part in after-school activities.

It’s good news that Chinese education experts have noticed the problem and made some rules about that. So what’s your opinion? Do you expect China to pass a similar law?

B.Because their sleeping habits are bad and schools start early.
C.Because they play computer games till late.
D.Because they have too much homework.
3. Which sentence do you think can be filled in the blank in paragraph 3?
A.They can put on weight.B.They will like their teachers.
C.They will join more clubs.D.They will pay more attention to classes.
4. From the passage, we can infer (推断) that ________ .
A.students should have enough sleeping time in the writer’s opinion

7 . Scientists recently discovered that our brains may be just as busy at night as they are during the day. While we sleep, our brains are doing much more than getting ready for the next day. Scientists found that the brain may be busy cleaning out harmful waste materials.

As with many studies, scientists turned to mice for help. They studied the mice brains as they slept and when they were awake. They saw that the brains of sleeping mice were hard at work.

Dr. Maiken led the study. The brain expert says our brains perform two very different jobs. It seems they have daytime jobs. Later they “moonlight” at a nighttime job. And this study says that is what our brains seem to be doing. “When we are awake, the brain cells are working very hard at processing all the information around us. When we are asleep, they work very, very hard at removing all the waste that builds up when we are awake.” The scientists say that the waste material includes poisons.

They also found that during sleep, the brain’s cells become smaller, which allows waste to be removed more successfully. Dr. Maiken says these poisons end up in the liver(肝脏). There, they are broken down and then removed from the body. “So we need to sleep because we have a cleaning system that removes many of the poisonous waste products from the brain.”

Dr. Maiken says the next step is to look for the process in human brains. She says the results show how important sleep is to health and fighting disease. The research may also one day lead to treatments to prevent or help fight mental disorders(精神疾病).

“People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”— Daryl F. Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, commenting on television in 1946.

The need for creativity is changing how the workplace is organized and what people do. These changes centre on the use and _______ of information: the basis for ideas. Creative ideas can also be used to _______ the organization itself by increasing the _______ of workers. One such innovation is the elimination of restrictive job descriptions that put workers in “boxes” and ________ their performance.
