文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。预算紧张的人可能会选择与他人合租来节省开支,文章主要介绍了与他人合租的利弊。

2 . Coffee cups, clothes all over the floor and uninvited guests — and they’re not even yours! These are the joys of flatsharing. For many, buying a house or flat is just too expensive. In fact, the total amount of rent paid by tenants (租户) in Britain in 2017 rose to more than 50 billion pounds — more than double the level of ten years ago.     1     You rent a room and share the kitchen, living room and bathroom, for example. But apart from the financial saving, what are the advantages and disadvantages of flatsharing?

Living with others means that you can pool your resources.     2     Living with people means meeting their friends, who may then become your friends. And don’t forget the networking opportunity. Lastly, there’s the emotional support.     3     But don’t forget to return a favour when they need it.

But flatsharing means there’s limited storage space. Some people may not respect the boundaries. You might well come home to find your things in a mess.     4     Despite the list showing turns of duty, some people don’t like to pull their weight. And then there are unexpected events. If a flatmate forgets to inform you about a party they’re throwing and what you want is a quiet night, it can be challenging.

5     Some people prefer their own space, while others enjoy a social environment. For many who lack the means to buy their own property, a flat share is, and will continue to be, a necessity regardless.

A.You can gain access to their social networks.
B.There’ll always be a shoulder to cry on when you need one.
C.The most obvious disadvantage is that you may not get much privacy.
D.Besides, cleanliness may be one of the biggest disadvantages of a shared flat.
E.Despite the disadvantages, there are many advantages involved in flatsharing.
F.Those with a tight budget may choose to share the place with others to save money.
G.Whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages is something decided by yourself.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就追逐梦想提出了一些建议。

4 . You are never too old, too poor, too young, or too sick to live your dreams. Dreams are just dreams until you decide they are going to be something more.     1

Perfect timing is a myth.

There will always be an excuse for you to keep waiting for the perfect set of circumstances to appear in your life. If you are going to be a dream chaser, start chasing your dreams now.     2

Actions make dreams come true.

This is where dreamers often get stuck, the taking action part.     3     Dreaming is the formulation of a thought and living the dream is taking that thought into actions. If all the great dreamers in the world kept their dreams in the formulation stage we might not have things such as computers, phones, or cars. Think of the roles those dreams play in all of our lives.

Obstacles will appear.

4     Every dream chaser meets them. Do not let your obstacles prevent you from continuing on the path to your dream. If Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, had given up when he had his first major obstacle in 2006, who knows where Facebook would be today? He instead chose to meet his obstacles and continued to the next phase of changing how we all communicate in the world today.

    5

Sometimes people want to go so fast that they sabotage the speed of their dreams. The greatest dreams are the ones that are the most challenging. There is no easy button to living them. There is a transition phase that has to take place when you go from chasing to actually living the dream.

A.Focus on the formulation.
B.There is no fast and easy way.
C.Don’t put off living your dream until tomorrow.
D.Think about your dream when you wake up every day.
E.Dreams are great to have, but living them is the game changer.
F.When you are chasing your dream, be prepared to meet with obstacles.
G.Here are several things you should know if you have started chasing your dreams.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Father, Mother, big Brother Tom, little Sister Polly, and the baby, Gustavus Adolphus lived in a house, but that was rented. They wanted a home of their own, with a sunny room for Mother and Father and Baby. They wanted a small room close by for the little sister, and a big, airy room for Brother Tom. They wanted a cozy (温暖舒适的) room for the cooking and eating. What’s more, they wanted a room that Grandmother might call her own when she came to see them.

One day, the father came in with a smiling face and called the family to him. “Now, what do we all want more than anything else in the world?” he said.

“A home!” said the family members together.

“Well,” said the father, “I think we shall have our home, if each one of us will help. I must go away to the forest. All winter long I must cut trees down. Then I shall be paid in lumber (木材), which will help in the building of the home. While I am away, Mother will have to fill my place, and her own, too.”

Brother Tom asked eagerly, “What can I do?” “You will work for the carpenter (木匠), and all the while be learning to saw (锯) and hammer. You will be ready in the spring to help build the home,” answered the father.

“Now, who will take care of the baby?” said the father.

“I will, I will,” cried Polly, running to kiss the baby.

So it was all arranged that they would have their home. When the wood cutters went to the forest, the father was ready to go with them.

White snow was on the ground, and the wind was blowing in the forest. But the father kept his heart cheery. Nobody’s ax (斧头) was sharper than his or cut so many trees. No one was gladder than he when spring came and the logs were pulled to the sawmills, where they were sawed into lumber to build houses. Then the father hurried home.

7 . How to survive exam stress

Exam time is one of the most stressful in school, whether it is high school, college or graduate school.     1     Below, I have put together my top four tips for coping with and conquering exam stress!

FIND WHERE YOU WORK BEST

Finding the perfect place to work is the most difficult part of this process in my opinion.     2     No one place will be perfect for everyone! Be it a busy café, on the floor of your room, sat on a bench in the Downs, or in one of the libraries, a good place to work is the first step in coping with exam stress and being productive.

ORGANISE, ORGANISE, ORGANISE

My biggest tip is that organizing your time, creating a work schedule, and keeping on top of lectures and extra readings from the very start of the academic year will immensely reduce exam stress. I know organization does not come naturally to everyone.     3     You’ll be surprised how much more confident you feel when you get to the exam period if you have an organized work routine!

REST AND REWARD

The Pomodoro technique (番茄时间管理法) is very popular and efficient! Set an alarm for 25 minutes, start working, and then rest for 5 minutes.     4     After you feel you have done enough work for the day, then a good way to stay motivated to continue studying tomorrow is to reward yourself. You could binge-watch your favourite TV show, go to the gym, nap, get your favourite sweet snack, or go out for a drink with friends.

CONFIDE (吐露心声) IN SOMEONE

When I’m feeling most stressed, my instinct is to keep it inside and not tell anyone — I don’t want people to know that I am struggling.     5     Even just explaining how you feel or what you’re actually stressed about to someone can be incredibly relieving and clears your mind.

These are only four ways to help survive exam stress, but try and find what works best for you. Remember that what your friends do may be the opposite of what you need. Good luck!

A.Even the best students in your school feel the stress.
B.With the right amount of hard work and focus you can pass your exams easily.
C.If so, making small to-do lists or using a planner can also make such a big difference.
D.You can repeat this process 4-6 times and then have a longer break or even grab some food.
E.Catch up with your studies a couple nights before, and you can save the final night to get a good night’s sleep.
F.It often goes unnoticed that the environment we are in when we work impacts our productivity to a great extent.
G.But reaching out to family or friends about how overwhelmed I felt, how I thought I was going to fail was so helpful.

8 . Coffee shops are banning laptops in a bid to stop freelance (自由职业的) workers from coming inside and taking up their tables.

Small businesses which used to offer free Wi-Fi in a bi d to attract customers into their shops are now changing the trend in a bid to improve service and social interaction. Many owners have complained that laptop and table t users are camping out on tables for hours on end without spending much money in store.

One such business, Society Cafe in Bath, made headlines last month and it put up posters asking people using their free Wi-Fi for work to be “considerate”. The store’s approach was widely praised on social media, with one user describing the request as “polite and to the point” and another calling it “more than reasonable”.

Dough Lover in Brighton has adopted a similar stance (立场), with a sign on the door declaring “This is laptop-free zone”. Its owner Ronke Arogundade told The Guardian that the approach was about “recovering the art of hospitality”. She added, “Without laptops, people have a natural time cycle — they drink their coffee, have some food, chat and leave. But when you open a computer you move beyond that natural cycle and lose touch with the environment around you. One woman got very angry, but another person was absolutely excited and asked me all about why we’re doing this.

Small Talk Tearooms, in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, has also banned all of its Wi-Fi, describing it as “anti-social”. Owner Chris told Gloucestershire Live, “We just can’t afford it. People turn up, buy one coffee, and spend all day sitting at the table using the Wi-Fi. We need customers coming in and out throughout the day to survive. We’re only a small business. That’s why we can understand the likes of Costa doing it, because they can afford it. We’re not against that, but we won’t have Wi-Fi here.
