As long as she could remember, Mary had been fascinated by her grandmother’s notebooks. They were overflowing with stories and recipes from every corner of the globe, gathered during her wanderings in her youth. Those notebooks were like a time machine, taking her back to the days when her grandmother was young and full of life. She felt as if she could almost taste the flavors of the dishes her grandmother had cooked back then.
The notebooks were more than just pages of paper and ink. They were a reflection of her grandmother’s life, a record of her experiences and learning. Each recipe was a memory, each story a lesson learned. And now, those notebooks were about to pass into Mary’s keeping. Her grandmother had promised to pass them down to her when she was old enough to appreciate them.
Mary couldn’t wait to dive into those notebooks and discover more about her grandmother’s world. She was sure that they would be a rich source of knowledge and inspiration, and she was determined to honor her grandmother’s legacy (遗产) by preserving and cherishing those priceless notebooks.
One day, while searching through her grandmother’s attic (阁楼) , Mary came across a pile of unfamiliar notebooks. As she turned the pages of one of them, she realized they were filled with intricate (错综复杂的) details of her grandmother’s life. However, some pages were missing. Mary was puzzled. She wondered what could have happened to those missing pages and what secrets they might have held. She was determined to discover the truth behind the notebooks and fill in the missing pieces of her grandmother’s life.
With her heart pounding in her chest, Mary wildly searched the attic for those missing pages, but still couldn’t find them. Then, suddenly, she recalled her grandmother mentioning something about hiding things in plain sight. A light bulb went off in her head-the missing pages must be somewhere in the house! She knew she had to find them before they were lost forever.

There is a story from many years ago of a primary school teacher. Her name was Rose.
On the first day of school, as Rose looked out over her new fifth grade class, her attention was immediately drawn to two boys, Mark and Charlie. Mark had a high energy that filled the room, his voice echoing even in casual conversations. He laughed loudest and answered questions with enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Charlie, Mark’s partner-in-crime, had a naughty grin and a twinkle in his eyes. Together, they were perfect.
While Mark would com mand attention with his tales, Charlie would comment cleverly, making the whole class burst into laughter. Rose could already tell that these two would keep her on her toes. She smiled to herself, though, ready for an eventful year ahead. She knew she had to find a way to channel their energy positively, turning their enthusiasm into a driving force for learning.
One day, Rose had a unique assignment for her students. She asked them to list each classmate's name on two sheets, leaving gaps between. Next, she instructed them to write down the nicest thing they could think of for each student. The assignment consumed the whole period. As they left, each student handed in their papers.
Over the weekend, Rose wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, creating individual lists for every student. On Monday, she handed out the lists. Soon, happiness spread across the room. Mark, known for his naughty behavior, looked astonished. “I had no idea I mattered to anyone,” he whispered, visibly moved. Beside him, Charlie, Mark’s partner- in-crime, said similarly.“I never realized others thought so highly of me.”
No one ever mentioned those lists in class again. Rose never found out if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter.

3 . The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has to recall hundreds of foods every year. Like cookie snack packs with pieces of blue plastic hiding inside, dressing and sauce containing salmonella (沙门氏菌) or various jams containing with lead (铅).
It can take a few months before a recall is issued. But now researchers have come up with a method that might fast-track that process, leading to early detection and, ultimately, faster recalls. The AI system relies on the fact that people increasingly buy foods and spices online. And people tend to write reviews of products they buy online, which are like bread crumbs (包屑) to food-safety officials sniffing (嗅) out dangerous products.
The researchers linked FDA food recalls from 2012 to 2014 to amazon reviews of those same products. They then trained machine-learning algorithms (算法) to distinguish between reviews for recalled items and reviews for items that had not been flagged. And the trained algorithms were able to predict FDA recalls three quarters of the time. They also identified another 20, 000 reviews for possibly unsafe foods, most of which had never been recalled. The results are published in Journal of the American Medical In formatics Association.
The World Health Organization estimates that 600 million people worldwide get sick annually from polluted food, and more than 400,000 people die from it. “Sohaving tools that enable us to detect this a lot faster and hopefully investigate and do recalls faster will be useful not just in the U. S. but in other countries around the world as well.” Study author Elaine Nsoesie of Boston University. She did add one warning even recalled products can still get five-star reviews. So stars alone don’t tell the whole sickening story. The proof unfortunately, may still be in the pudding.

7 . I come from a family of travelers. My mom started a travel agency when she was younger than I am now, and growing up they never left me behind when they went on their adventures.
I graduated early and got a degree from a community college by the time I turned 18. At that time, I had traveled to around 70 countries. This was the point in my life where people began to ask me the question that a young person will never want to be asked: “What are you going to do next?”
In an attempt to answer that question, I began by asking myself what I was most passionate about, which has always been traveling. That’s when it dawned on me — the very first time I thought about breaking the world record.
In 2016, I got serious and started working on my mission to travel to every single one of the world’s 196 sovereign nations without any official sponsorship. I spent countless hours crammed on planes, trains, chicken buses, tuk-tuks and junk boats traveling with nothing but a backpack. I have encountered health issues, spanning from malaria in West Africa to hospital-worthy food poisoning in Pakistan. I learned how to cope with public anxiety attacks by myself in foreign countries, and I endured the brain-sizzling frustration of dealing with officials from every country that requires a visa.
Believe it or not, beyond a record breaker, these memories are treasurable as they were the most defining moments of my life, spent far, far away from my comfort zone, I’m currently writing a book about my experiences in every country and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. After finally completing this massive life goal, I’ll be taking the next few months to nourish my physical and mental health as I make plans for the future.

8 . There are many ways to define fame. But one of them, surely, is to see your name in lights above bustling New York streets. A Chinese writer saw just an illumination in July when his name appeared on the big screen in Times Square. For Liu Zhenyun, it was a spectacular and fully-deserved promotion of his latest book, Laughter and Tears: A Novel.
Liu, one of the best-selling authors of novels in contemporary China, has penned a number of popular works, including Someone to Talk To, Remembering 1942 , and I Did Not Kill My Husband.
His works have been translated into more than 28 languages, and Someone to Talk To was awarded the 2011 Mao Dun Literature Prize.
Laughter and Tears: A Novel can be worthily called another ‘high peak’after Someone to Talk To, Zhang Xudong, a professor of comparative literature and East Asian studies at New York University, says. The novel is based on the folklore of a legendary figure Hua Emiang, and describes the paintings of the narrator’s uncle, telling of the humor and life of people in Yanjin, Henan province, Liu’s hometown.
In the book, everyone from Yanjin is humorous and can tell excellent jokes. Hua Emiang, the spirit of a widow waiting eternally for her husband, as in Yanjin folklore, will come into people’s dreams. In this state she will ask them to tell her a joke. If she thinks the joke is boring, she will instruct them to carry her to a place where she can drink spicy soup. But they die in the effort as she crushes them following her transformation into a mountain. However, if she likes the joke, she will give them a persimmon (柿子).As a result, people from Yanjin tell really good jokes.
Corriere della Sera, an Italian newspaper, called Liu “the Kalka of Beijing”. In 2018, Liu was awarded France’s Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
An author at Kirkus Reviews, a book review site in the United States, writes, “Liu has written a masterful tale that will make you laugh even as you despair”. Liu’s tragedies often have a feature of comedy and his comedies are also like tragedies. He tells many jokes and ridiculous stories in his books, and you will laugh when you read them. However, the truth behind the jokes could be cruel and sorrowful.

Dark rain clouds were gathering in the sky. I was cycling as fast as I could to get home before the downpour. When I felt a few big drops on my head, I decided to head for a bus stop, about a hundred meters away. As I was nearing the bus stop, I saw a woman rushing towards it from the opposite direction, behind whom was a little boy.
Suddenly, a motorcycle sped past me, almost knocking me down. “Hey! Are you mad?” I shouted at the motorcyclist. He turned to look at me, saying, “Sorry.” However, for a split second, he just sped on. Then he was heading right for the woman and little boy! “Watch out! Watch out!” I shouted. I saw the lady turn her head to look at the motorcyclist, with a look of shock on her face.
In an instant, the motorcyclist reached the woman and accidentally hit her. The hit made the woman move backward. The woman and the boy fell on the road, landing right in the path of a truck. “Stop! Stop!” I screamed at the motorcyclist and the truck driver, waving my arms wildly in the air. Thankfully, the truck driver had seen what was happening. With a sudden brake, the truck stopped a few meters from the spot where the woman and the boy had fallen. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist stopped. He kept apologizing, explaining he was in a hurry to the hospital to see his sick mother.
I saw the woman climbing towards the crying child. Pulling over to the side of the road, I ran to help them. By the time I get there, the truck driver had reached them. He picked up the child in his arms and examined his legs.
“I think your little boy is all right,” said the truck driver. “How about you? Do you feel any pain?” The lady replied anxiously, “Please help me. I am pregnant(怀孕的).”
