There is a saying that we should all just mind our own business and let the chips fall where they may, because no good comes from doing good. This, of course, is not necessarily true.

In Hawaiian culture, aloha has many meanings. First, it is a greeting. However, it is also an expression of love and friendship. One man was a living example of “aloha”, for he had a story to unfold.

Amanda was shopping with her young son, and she was absorbed in picking up their groceries for their family reunion. She was in such a hurry that she even forgot her wallet in the shopping cart, which contained her driver license, credit cards, plenty of cash, and even a gift card that could easily be redeemed (兑换) by anyone . It was not until she arrived home that she found her wallet gone. The woman returned to the supermarket, and started her search for the lost wallet by watching hours and hours of security footage in the supermarket. After turning to several different cameras around the store, but in vain, she completely gave up hope.

Andy Jose was a security guard at the World supermarket. He moved to Maui 5 years ago, and worked as a security guard at the grocery store to support the family and put himself through college. He rode his bike to work and school every day because he didn’t have a car.

4 . Every year on Sept. 30, translators around the world celebrate International Translation Day. In 2023, under the theme “Translation unveils the many faces of humanity”, we dug into the various aspects of translation through the stories of one individual.

In the view of Xie Cun, a lecturer at Beijing Foreign Studies University, translators are like tour guides in the world of literature.

“A good guide doesn’t stand in front of the scenery talking endlessly but uses their knowledge and experience to lead tourists to the best viewpoints, offering explanations when necessary, and allowing tourists to experience the rest on their own,” he said. “I believe good translators do the same.” Xie’s opinion comes from his eight years of experience as a literary translator. Over his career, Xie has translated many literary works.

Xie’s journey into literary translation began with his cross-linguistic (跨语言学的) academic (学术的) background. During his undergraduate studies in Chinese language and literature, he discovered the power of translation. “I noticed that the same sentence could be translated in a moving way by one person but in an inactive manner by another. This comparison inspired me to give it a shot,” Xie explained.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Xie chose to pursue translation as his master’s major, focusing on research and practice in the field.

For Xie, the combination of two languages can create amazing connections, spreading language with new possibilities. “Literary creation can only shape one author. However, literary translation allows me to become countless authors, shaping a new self through the collision (碰撞) of different voices,” he said.

“I hope that the young people who are about to begin the path of literary translation can protect modern Chinese language with love and responsibility, contributing to the growth of our language and literature with the nutrients (营养物) of foreign literature,” he said.

5 . Are there any lakes in your hometown? What color are they? Around one-third of the world's lakes are blue, according to a study in September 2022. But global warming may lead them to turn green or even brown.

Xiao Yang from Southern Methodist University in the US and his team analyzed the color of over 85,000 lakes based on satellite photos taken from 2013 to 2020. They found that lakes in places with cooler average summer air temperatures — below 19°C — were more likely to be blue than lakes in places with warmer summers.

The color of a lake is in part decided by what's in the water. Water molecules (分子) absorb the long wavelengths of sunlight, such as red, orange, and yellow, leaving behind the shorter ones presenting green and mostly blue. Simply put, the cleaner the water, the bluer it looks. In warmer lakes, algae (藻) and phytoplankton (浮游植物) develop easily. These microbes (微生物) contain colors from green to brown and red, giving the lake a different color. If the temperature continues to rise with climate change unchecked, one in 10 blue lakes might change color, according to the study.

Lakes serve as a vital part of nature, with their color being one of the oldest ways to determine the health of an ecosystem. Humans get their drinking water from lakes, streams and ground water. As lakes become greener, people may lose lots of clean water. Because of this, treating the water of such lakes becomes more expensive. For lake animals, the thriving (茁壮成长) of algae and phytoplankton in greener lakes can provide more food resources. However, an increase in these microbes may cause lake animals to die for lack of oxygen.

1. What decide the color of lakes in part according to the text?
A.Microbes.B.Lake animals.
C.Shortages of oxygen.D.Wavelengths of sunlight.
2. What can we learn from the study?
A.More microbes symbolize cleaner water.
B.Lakes in warmer places tend to be green.
C.Researchers took photos of over 85,000 lakes.
D.The higher the temperature, the greener the lakes must be.
3. What does the underlined word “unchecked” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Prevented.B.Uncontrolled.C.Quickened.D.Unnoticed.
4. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The significance of lakes.B.The way to protect the lakes.
C.The potential impact of greener lakes.D.The influence of global warming on people.

6 . We’ve all heard “use your time wisely” at least once in our lives. But what does that mean? How can we use our time “wisely”? In an increasingly urbanizing world, we are getting more and more busy. Thus, things we do to relax, like reading a book, or going out with friends are becoming more rare.

There have been many studies that indicate how relaxation and going out with friends can improve your mental and physical health. Being able to take part in an enjoyable hobby or spend time with someone you enjoy being around can help release “feel good” hormones (激素) that can ease some stress in your daily life.

But of course, sometimes when I find myself enjoying a book, playing a video game, or surfing the Internet, I get this awful feeling immediately after that I could have used that time to do something productive like taking textbook notes or finishing homework.

However, even if it isn’t obvious, doing those little things prevents us from burning out too fast. It creates positive memories in your mind that will hopefully get you through a tough time. You need to “waste time” in order to be productive later on. That’s what the popular idea of a work-life balance tells us, which claims that we should have a balance between spending time on jobs or studying and the time spent with family, friends, and pursuing hobbies and interests. According to this model, you should be doing things you enjoy so that you can keep the balance.

We can use our time “wisely” by doing things that help us finish our degree or getting accepted into that one job, but we can also use our time “wisely” by taking some time to do what we love. There is no such thing as “wasting time” when it benefits you in the long run. The “work-life balance” that everyone talks about is important in this regard and we should all learn how to maintain that healthily.

1. How many kinds of relaxation are mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.Five.B.Four.C.Three.D.Two.
2. Why does the author feel terrible after relaxation?
A.Guilt arises from doing less fruitful things.
B.Balance between tasks and rests is broken.
C.Too little time is wasted on relaxing activities.
D.Relaxation will be replaced by busy days soon.
3. Which of the following is the benefit of “wasting time” according to Paragraph 4?
A.Keeping us in high spirits all the time.
B.Improving our efficiency and brainpower.
C.Keeping the balance between work and life.
D.Enabling us to handle troubles in a wise way.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.On Wasting TimeB.On Using Time Wisely
C.On RelaxationD.On Work-life Balance

Every time I sat down with my family and looked through our photos — holidays, trips, or vacations, there was always something missing. It was me. It was not just because I was the one behind the camera, but because I avoided being photographed. I always felt I looked awful in photos.

There were a few photos of me on my birthday that always made me feel bad. Generally speaking, I didn’t hate my appearance; I just wasn’t very photogenic (上相的). Therefore, when it came to family photos, I was missing. Gradually, I didn’t feel and look confident, and seldom smiled.

Then I met Mary. I was attending a writers’ meeting in North Carolina and she was a photographer who was good at photo shooting for writers. As a new writer, I needed a good personal photo for business cards and social media. I decided to give Mary a try.

The day of my appointment (约定) arrived. I picked out clothes that were most suitable for me. I checked myself in the mirror and felt I looked okay, but I was not sure whether the photos would reflect that. By the time Mary was to take photos of me, it began to have a light rain. My hair had started out nicely, but I knew the rain would destroy it.

I unwillingly walked into the room. Mary greeted me with a sunny smile. I felt relaxed. I was sure that she could sense I was not confident about my appearance because she immediately began to comfort me. She promised my photos would be wonderful. And she said how sad it made her that so many women thought so little of their appearance and how much this would hurt their self-respect.

The light rain stopped. Mary led me outside onto the grass-covered grounds of the meeting center. With the bright new green of spring and flowers seen everywhere, it was the perfect place for photos, even on a cloudy day.

It was several days before Christmas.Gray clouds covered the sky. The air was cold. The temperature was below freezing. It was snowing heavily. And the internet was out. Now I found that having the internet out could be a blessing for me. I decided to prepare my turkey meat for dinner, and get a few things done.

After the regular housework was done, I pulled the air conditioning units out of the windows and put them up for the winter. Next, I walked into the storage closet and pulled out the Christmas decorations and the artificial(人造的) tree. I unpacked my new picture and placed it lovingly on my old record player.

Then I set up my Christmas statues of Santa and Dickens’ books on the shelf along with the Christmas angel.Next I unpacked, fitted and put up the tree. After that I pulled out the lights, metal wires and decorations. I put each one on the tree gently and with great care while my son Marvin played Christmas music and decorated his own room.

In no time at all, everything was done. I looked at the tree and then outside again. This time, however, it didn’t seem so cold, gray, and gloomy. Instead, it felt warm and Christmas seemed to be in the air. Even the snowflakes floating in the wind felt more like a gift from Heaven. I heard “Away in a Manger" coming from my son’s CD player and hummed along (跟着哼唱).

This life certainly can seem full of pains at times. It is up to us, though, to make each one a blessing(祝福) in our life. Since there are benefits without the internet, we can turn it off for a while now and then.
