In the view of Xie Cun, a lecturer at Beijing Foreign Studies University, translators are like tour guides in the world of literature.

During his undergraduate studies in Chinese language and literature, he discovered the power of translation. “I noticed that the same sentence could be translated in a moving way by one person but in an inactive manner by another. This comparison inspired me to give it a shot,” Xie explained.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Xie chose to pursue translation as his master’s major, focusing on research and practice in the field.
For Xie, the combination of two languages can create amazing connections, spreading language with new possibilities. “Literary creation can only shape one author. However, literary translation allows me to become countless authors, shaping a new self through the collision (碰撞) of different voices,” he said.
“I hope that the young people who are about to begin the path of literary translation can protect modern Chinese language with love and responsibility, contributing to the growth of our language and literature with the nutrients (营养物) of foreign literature,” he said.

Xiao Yang from Southern Methodist University in the US and his team analyzed the color of over 85,000 lakes based on satellite photos taken from 2013 to 2020. The color of a lake is in part decided by what's in the water. Every time I sat down with my family and looked through our photos — holidays, trips, or vacations, there was always something missing. It was me. It was not just because I was the one behind the camera, but because I avoided being photographed. I always felt I looked awful in photos.
