3 . With the College Entrance Examination drawing near as a senior year student, you may have so many pressure coming from so many directions that you cant figure out what to do first.

Balancing goals in life

When you have many things to do and a lot of demands on your time, you can lose sight of what’s important. One of the best ways to see the big picture—    1    —is to lay out your goals.

Pressure Points and How to Deal with Them

Confused or overwhelmed- talk to someone you trust.     2    . They may help you find solutions to your problems and worries

Being too hard on yourself - ease up, take a break and do something you enjoy. Daydream, read a book, go out with friends—anything that helps you relax.

Problems, problems, problems—recognize your limits. It’s too stressful to try to deal with all your problems at once.     3    .

    4

It’s important to remember that goals belong to you—not to your parents, your teachers, or your friends. After you’re set your goals, identify the skills you have to achieve those goals. If you’re not sure what skills you’ll need, do some research. Try the library, your guidance adviser and teachers, and other people who could help you.

Goals exist to serve you. If your goal is something you no longer want, change it. Identify the barriers to getting your goals.     5    . Don’t get depressed by a big, long-term goal—see what steps you can take to achieve it and set those steps down as short-term, “do-able” goals.

A.Goal-Setting Tips
B.Consider ways to overcome them
C.what you want out of life
D.Choose what’s most urgent and set aside the rest until later
E.Discuss your concerns with a friend, parent or teacher
F.As long as you know what skill is important and what isn’t
G.Too much to do

5 . On April 2,we said goodbye to Tiangong I,China’s first space lab.According to the China Manned Space Agency(中国载人航天),Tiangong I re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层) and fell into the South Pacific Ocean.

There are many spacecraft that are still in orbit above the Earth. They are flying at heights ranging from 300 to 1,000 kilometers. After finishing their trips, they will all re-enter the Earth's atmosphere like Tiangong I.

There are two types of re-entries:controlled(受控的)re-entry and uncontrolled re-entry.

Some satellites(卫星)and manned spacecraft come back to the Earth in a controlled re-entry.Scientists calculate(计算)the path of the falling spacecraft and its speed. They can guide the spacecraft to fall in a chosen area.In 2017,Tianzhou I,China's first cargo(货运)spacecraft, was directed to fall in the South Pacific Ocean.

Some spacecraft may have problems while in space,or are simply no longer usable after a certain amount of time. These craft come back in an uncontrolled re-entry.It is hard to tell when and where these spacecraft will fall until the last few hours. The US space station Skylab came back partially uncontrolled in l979.Parts of the station fell in western Australia, but no one was injured.

During re-entry,most of the spacecraft will burn up while passing through the Earth's atmosphere.Only a small amount of the debris(碎片)will reach the ground.

The debris typically ends up falling into the ocean,China Daily reported.Tiangong I weighs about 8.5tons.The amount of debris that falls to the Earth might be about l to 1.5 tons, the Beijing News reported. That is about the same weight as a car.

1. The debris from Tiangong I ________.
A.fell into the South Pacific ocean
B.fell in western Australia
C.fell in the central part of the US
D.fell into the North Pacific Ocean
2. When the spacecraft finishes its trip,it will ________.
A.burn up and disappear
B.re-enter the Earth's atmosphere
C.speed up and fly back to Earth
D.enter another orbit and stay in space
3. Which of the following is TRUE about the US space station Skylab?
A.It came back in a controlled re-entry.
B.Some people were injured by its debris.
C.It was hard to tell where it would fall in advance.
D.It was directed to fall into the ocean.
4. This story most likely comes from ________.
A.a storybookB.a government report
C.a science magazineD.a movie review

7 . Scientists have recreated a 1985 study of birds in Peru that shows climate change is pushing them from their natural environment. Thirty years ago, researchers studied over 400 kinds of birds living on a mountainside in Peru. In 2017, researchers looked again at the bird populations. They found that almost all had moved to higher places in the mountain. Almost all had decreased in size. And, the scientists say at least eight bird groups that started at the higher elevations (高地) had died out completely.

The researchers say the birds might have moved up the mountain because of temperature changes. Or changes to food sources may have forced them to go higher. The findings were published in a science journal. The 1985 research has documented birds and other animals moving up in elevation (高地) in reaction to warming temperatures. Mark Urban, a biologist at a university, said this recent study was the first to prove that rising temperatures and moving to avoid them can lead to extinction.

In 2016, Fitzpatrick, director and a co-writer of the study passed his notes, photos and other records to Benjamin Freeman. Freeman has been researching tropical birds for more than 10 years. He set out in August and September of 2017 to copy Fitzpatrick’s study. His team used the same methods, searching the same places in the same time of year.

Freeman’s team wanted to see how things had changed for the bird groups since 1985. The average temperatures on the mountain had risen 0.42 degrees Celsius. His team placed 20 sound recording devices on the mountain to record the sounds of birds that might not easily be seen.

Freeman said that the birds moved an average of 98 meters further up the mountain. He believes that temperature is the main cause of the birds’ movement. Fitzpatrick noted that birds used to living in areas with little temperature change may be especially at risk because of climate change. He said, “We should expect that what’s happening on this mountain top is happening more generally in the Andes, and other tropical mountain ranges.”

1. How many kinds of birds lived in Peru 30 years ago?
A.At least eight bird groups.B.More than 400.
C.Over eight bird groups.D.Less than 400.
2. Why did the birds move up the mountain?
A.To avoid temperature changes.
B.To find more food sources.
C.To adapt to extreme temperature.
D.To react to the increase of other kinds of animals.
3. How did Freeman and his team record the sound of birds not easily being seen?
A.They had the temperature rise 0.42 degrees Celsius.
B.They moved an average of 98 meters further up the mountain.
C.They placed 20 sound recording devices on the mountain.
D.They kept on listening to the sound happening on this mountain top.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Two teams used the same methods to do researches.
B.Scientists documented birds and other animals moving up in elevation.
C.Scientists have been researching tropical birds for more than 10 years.
D.Rising temperature made almost all birds in Peru become extinct.

8 . A recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 36 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility (能见度) of yellow makes it less difficult for drivers to avoid getting into   accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate.

The study was led by Prof Ho. To test whether there was a relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analysed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 6. 1 fewer accidents per 1,000 taxis per month.

They also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 16,700 taxis in a ratio(比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 76.6 fewer accidents will occur per month or 917 fewer accidents per year.

Assuming an average repair cost of $1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual saving of $ 2 million.

“We are eager to continue to validate (证实) the findings of our study by looking at the use of yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For example, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against those of other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we’re also interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicles that are of different colors.” Explained Prof Ho.

1. Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents?
A.Because yellow can be seen more easily.
B.Because yellow signals a warning of danger.
C.Because drivers tend to be more careful in yellow taxis.
D.Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings.
2. What’s Prof Ho’s study based on?
A.Physical risks taxi passengers experience.
B.The economic effect of changing taxi color.
C.Data from Singapore’s largest taxi company.
D.Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide.
3. What do Prof Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest?
A.School buses should be painted yellow.
B.Their findings are worth popularizing.
C.Their study will be furthered.
D.Yellow should be widely used in public transport.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Caution: yellow taxis aheadB.Safer to ride in yellow taxis
C.Why are yellow taxis preferred?D.How can colors help prevent accidents?
