A Hot Pot of Debate
The strong smell of the famous Sichuan cooking floods into local streets, whose hot pots of chili (红辣椒) and oil boil like restless volcanoes (火山). Along with all the flavours, however, a wave of panic is in the air. Sichuan cuisine (美食) is facing a crisis.
It seems surprising to hear such concern, since Sichuan cuisine has been conquering the world and gaining considerable popularity abroad as China’s favourite out-of-home dining.
But according to some old and experienced cooks, the rapid growth has worsened the cuisine, drowning the tastes of dishes in large amounts of chili and oil with menus being narrowed to spicy (辛辣的) dishes. Many cooks now are pursuing spicier and spicier food, ignoring the great variety of the cuisine. Thus, the simplification of tastes has created a crisis, sending a strong shocking wave into the time-honoured but complex traditions. Early this year, I watched a young cook add green vegetable to Kung Pao Chicken, which should be a wonderful mix of chicken, peanuts, red chilies and spices.
However, voices from many young cooks throw light on the new demands on Sichuan cuisine in the modern time— ”There’s no survival without innovation.” They hold the view that we do have to maintain the tradition, but it’s not a display in a museum. What makes sense is that although Sichuanese cooking is classified as one of the eight great cuisines of China, its roots are quite shallow, so after over several centuries of trade and migration, outsiders brought in a variety of new ingredients and cooking techniques. These influences combined only several generations ago to create an unusually tasty cuisine.
I believe the attractiveness of Sichuan cuisine is that it’s a big melting pot. Whatever is attractive in other cuisines, it can be absorbed and adapted to Sichuan cuisine. It’s not right to judge who is right and who is wrong, but it is clear that we should preserve the essence of tradition, while meeting modern expectations as well.

Trunkster’s No-Zipper Suitcase
If you are looking for a more efficient suitcase, try Trunkster! Trunkster is a zipper-free suitcase with intelligent features. It is very different from the traditional suitcases in many aspects.
First, if you use a traditional zipper suitcase, it will be tough when you want to get something out of your luggage quickly. That is because you have to lie it down and unzip it just to get a sweater out. But with the help of Trunkster, that problem can easily be solved. Trunkster bags open with a sliding door, and you just need to push a button to unlock it. That’s very convenient, right?
Second, Trunkster is equipped with a digital scale. When travelling by plane, you have to face the weight limit. Weight restrictions vary from airline to airline, and often even by the route. With the help of the Trunkster armed with a digital scale, you will not be put at risk of going beyond baggage weight limit. Trunkster features a heavy-duty sensor protection system, which can remind you of the real-time luggage weight so that you can make the best use of your luggage.
Third, with the help of GPS installed in Trunkster, it can be easily tracked wherever it is. As a result, you don’t need to worry about losing your bag, whether it’s unexpectedly gate checked or you’re checking for a long journey. You only need to use the specific app in your smartphone to position your luggage.
Finally, USB charging is available to the users. No longer will you be one of those desperate people wandering around a plug at the airport. Trunkster’s power bank is removable so that it can be used independently of Trunkster wherever you are.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”
