文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍如何选择适当的出行方式来降低运输过程中的碳足迹。

2 . Carbon dioxide emissions from transportation are now thought as the top source of green-house gases. One of the most effective ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to reconsider how much, and how often, you travel.

Going car free for a year could save about 2. 6 tons of carbon dioxide, according to a study from the University of British Columbia. How can you stop using a car? Try taking a train, bus or better yet, riding a bike.

But let’s be realistic. You will likely need to use a car this year. So, when you do, here are some tips to make your trip more climate-friendly. Driving efficiently can help to reduce emissions. Go easy on the gas and brakes and drive like you have an egg under your foot. Regularly service your car to keep it more efficient. Keeping your tires pumped correctly can re-duce emissions. Low tire pressure will hurt your fuel economy. Air conditioning and frequent city driving can make emissions go up. So cut down on these as often as possible. Use cruise control (定速巡航) on long drives-in most cases, this can help to save gas. Don’t weigh your car down with extra things that you don’t need on your trip.

Fly often? Taking one fewer long round-trip flight could reduce your personal carbon footprint significantly. If you use public transportation often and fly less, your carbon foot-print might still be relatively sustainable, but if you drive and fly a lot, your emissions will be sigher. If you can’t avoid flying, you can offset them by donating money to sustainable proacts, such as supplying efficient stoves to rural homes, or projects which help farmers deal with crop waste environmentally.

1. What does the author think of going car free?
A.Efficient.B.Costly.C.Impractical.D.Reliable.
2. Which can be adopted to save fuel of your car?
A.Maintaining your car properly.B.Using cruise control in the city.
C.Stepping hard on the gas and brakes.D.Geiting rid of all the necessary loads.
3. What does the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Make up for.B.Team up with.C.Set foot in.D.Put up with.
4. Which is the best title for the text?
A.How to save fuel when driving carsB.How to reduce your carbon footprint
C.Reduce carbon footprint by all meansD.Lower carbon footprint in transportation

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了使大脑更聪明的方法。

10 . Make Your Brain Smarter

You know that eating sensible diet and getting plenty of exercise help make your body healthy and strong. But did you know that there are ways to make your brain healthier and smarter? Studies show that when the brain is forced to do something new, it creates new neural pathways.     1

Limit Your TV Viewing

Watching an average TV show requires very little brain power and brings the same result as neglecting physical exercise.     2     If you watch TV informative, choose something educational and informative.

Use Your Non-dominant (不占优势的) Hand

If you are right-handed, use your left hand for everyday activities, or use your right hand if you are left-handed. Doing familiar things in a new way will cause your brain to create new neural networks. Brushing our teeth is something most of us do daily. We really don’t put that much thought into it -- but maybe we should. Experts suggest that we can stimulate this right brain by changing things up and working with our non-dominant hand. So the next time you brush your teeth, open the tube, apply your toothpaste and brush with the opposite hand.

Shower with Your Eyes Closed

3     Even if you drop the soap -- that’s okay. Use your different senses. Searching for the soap or shampoaing while feeling the textures with your eyes closed works your brain and helps make you smarter. Using your fingers to make fine distinctions between objects or textures can rewire the brain areas involved in touch, suggests Larry katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Centre and author. This has been true for brain-imaging experiments with blind Braille readers and monkeys trained to use their fingers to get food.

    4

Can playing “Chopsticks” on the piano make you smarter? Well, according to a study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, it can. Kids who received at least three years of instrumental music training outperformed children without training in fine motor skills (精细运动技能), vocabulary and non-verbal- reasoning skills. Apparently, people who are better able to move to a beat show more consistent brain responses to speech than those with less rhythm. The study findings suggest that musical training might sharpen the brain’s response to language -- making you a little smarter.

A.Learn a New Language
B.Move to the Beat of Your Own Drum
C.Your brain will become weak just as your muscles do.
D.Walking for exercise requires little time and brings the same result as running.
E.Hop in the shower and shut your eyes.
F.The more pathways you have, the faster you can think and the better memory you will have.
