2 . Steve Davies, a 23-year-old board designer in Wales, is developing a surfboard made from mycelia (菌丝体) instead of plastic.
A 2022 report showed that more than 400, 000 boards are made each year. The global market for surfboards reached $2.2 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $3.2 billion by 2027. But about 80% of boards are made from plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down. This will be a serious problem for the environment as the market grows.
“And even when it does break down, it can go into fish’s ecosystem (生态系统), which means that humans will end up eating this plastic,” Davies said.
Davies made his first surfboard in 2020, but the experience showed him many harmful materials were produced in making each board. During his final year at university, he started looking into mycelia and making his beloved sport more environment-friendly.
“My family owns a farm with horses, so I was quickly able to collect substrate material (基料) in the form of horse bedding, to allow the mycelia to grow in,” Davies explained. “This gave me an idea to start a surfboard business—growing surfboards on a farm near the beach and using waste materials from that very same farm, reducing the transport of materials, and therefore reducing carbon (碳) given out into the environment.”
“In the right conditions, we will grow a mycelium board in around 21 days,” Davies said. “The dream would be to make it the new standard. Connecting with nature would be the new design rules and that would be really cool. We’re using the sea and we should give back to the sea.”

5 . Of the many colorful Romanian traditions that are brought to life every year, the Bear Dance is one of the most inspiring. This folk tradition dates back to thousands of years ago.
Traditionally, the arrival of the “bears” is announced by a small group of “irozi”, who blow whistles (口哨) to a rhythm set by the head bear tamer (训兽师). Chosen for his leadership skills, the head tamer is the one who decides when each of the acts is played and gives the cues.
The “bears” dance to the beat set by the pan flutes (排萧) and the drums, after practicing for up to three months before the day of the ceremony. Wearing the special costumes requires strength and must be handled with confidence, to look fierce, with the heaviest of costumes weighing up to 50 kilos.
When the person wearing the costume is standing up straight, the “bear” looks up. During the dance, the wearer must bend forward and shake his or her body to the left and to the right while taking small steps either to the front or to the side.
Taking place every winter in villages and cities in Romania’s eastern region of Moldova, the Bear Dance symbolizes the death and rebirth of time. The Bear Dance sees men of all ages, and increasingly more women, who are dressed in real bear skins and dance to the rhythm of pan flutes and drums to drive off evil spirits and ring in the new year. Performed between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, this ancient ritual brings together the whole community, who gather to watch the performance.
By tradition, the procession of the Bear Dance, which includes 6 to 24 “bears”, would visit every family of the village, accompanied by up to three singing bear tamers, several characters wearing women’s clothes and drummers. While this tradition is still observed in many villages, in cities and towns it usually takes the form of a parade that takes place at the end of a major performance in the center.

Since the early 1980s, MOSI has been a destination where people of all ages can learn about technologies, science, etc. The museum has various exhibits. Before you leave, you can visit its gift shop for your family and friends.
Air Force Armament (空军装备) Museum (AFAM)
A unique museum in Florida is the Air Force Armament Museum. You’ll find the museum on the Eglin Air Force Base, just a few miles north of Fort Walton Beach. The museum opened in 1975 and is the only museum in the country fully dedicated to the Air Force Armament. One of the best things about visiting this museum is that admission (门票费) is free!

8 . How to Talk to Strangers
We are often taught at a very young age not to talk to strangers. However, we grow up and have to talk to strangers all day long.
First of all, it is very important to have a warm approach if you want to avoid a cold communication. So when you are approaching a stranger for the first time next time, send off friendly signals (信号), such as smiling.
Now that you have approached with friendly and warm signals, what do you say to a stranger?
After or during your opening line, give out your hand for a nice solid handshake. But what if you don’t like shaking hands? Too bad, I advise you to step up and shake the other person’s hand anyway. Why? Because handshakes are so important.
My final tip for you is to use food and drink as an opener if you can. Sitting at the bar is an easy way to make conversation with the person next to you.
A.Now it’s time to introduce yourself. |
B.Give something as a gift to the stranger at the first time. |
C.Having a small talk while waiting to be seated is very simple. |
D.Opening lines tend to make people very nervous, but don’t worry. |

9 . For hundreds of years, America’s wilderness has been reduced due to growing cities, leaving outdoors lovers like hunters with fewer chances. By around 1900, too much hunting drove America’s deer nearly into extinction (灭绝), less than a half-million deer, from 45 million in 1450.
Law-makers began to make rules to protect deer and keep ecological balance (生态平衡). And it did make a big difference. By 2000, the deer population had come up to 38 million. Those days, millions of deer lived side by side with humans and could freely find enough food resources.
Gradually, the number of deer was increasing too rapidly, which was not good for both the animals and people. City hunting plays an important role in keeping ecological balance, particularly in places where the animals sometimes cause major problems.
“City deer hunting is a management practice used in many cities and suburban areas across the United States,” says Jason Andrews, program manager of the Urban Deer Hunt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the early 2000s, a high number of car accidents were caused by deer. And there was also significant vegetation degradation (植被退化) in many cities. Many possible solutions were researched by the city government. Some suggested hunting deer and other wild animals, but others were against that practice.
In the end, researchers determined that the most effective and sustainable (可持续的) population management solution would be hunting with bows. “City deer hunting is popular in cities that have too many wild deer as well as wooded areas,” says Andrews. “In Cedar Rapids, all parts of the city have right habitats to keep deer population, thus hunting is allowed. I must note that hunting is only allowed on private lands. No parks or any other public grounds can be hunted.”

10 . When I was in the fifth grade, my teachers first discovered that I could not even read the first grade books. They didn’t think this kind of problem could happen to me since my father was a famous scientist. My parents sent me to experts, trying to find out what the problem was. My IQ was high, but I had severe problems in learning. They discovered that I was dyslexic (诵读困难的). I was lucky that my parents cared enough to find a way out for me.
When my parents went to Ford Country Day School and sat down with Brent, a teacher in the school, he agreed to help without thinking twice. My family was not rich and I was allowed to go to school free of charge because my mother drove some students to school in the morning in her car. I do know, however, without Brent reaching out to my family, my life would have taken a turn for the worst. Brent and my parents decided to have me retake the fifth grade in the next school year.
I was afraid of going to school with my difficulties in learning, but Brent’s kind and loving support helped me slowly learn to grow and overcome my learning disability. Ford Country Day School has become the most important turning point in my life. The foundation that Brent gave me has in many ways set my direction in life.
I went to Japan to live with my brother for one year right out of Ford Country Day School. I was in an international school in Tokyo. If I had not had the experience in Ford Country Day School, I would not have been able to survive in Japan. I count myself as one of the truly lucky people having been touched by Brent’s caring and love.
