文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了冲浪板设计师史蒂夫·戴维斯正在开发一种用菌丝体代替塑料制成的冲浪板。这种冲浪板既省钱又环保。

2 . Steve Davies, a 23-year-old board designer in Wales, is developing a surfboard made from mycelia (菌丝体) instead of plastic.

A 2022 report showed that more than 400, 000 boards are made each year. The global market for surfboards reached $2.2 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $3.2 billion by 2027. But about 80% of boards are made from plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down. This will be a serious problem for the environment as the market grows.

“And even when it does break down, it can go into fish’s ecosystem (生态系统), which means that humans will end up eating this plastic,” Davies said.

Davies made his first surfboard in 2020, but the experience showed him many harmful materials were produced in making each board. During his final year at university, he started looking into mycelia and making his beloved sport more environment-friendly.

“My family owns a farm with horses, so I was quickly able to collect substrate material (基料) in the form of horse bedding, to allow the mycelia to grow in,” Davies explained. “This gave me an idea to start a surfboard business—growing surfboards on a farm near the beach and using waste materials from that very same farm, reducing the transport of materials, and therefore reducing carbon (碳) given out into the environment.”

“In the right conditions, we will grow a mycelium board in around 21 days,” Davies said. “The dream would be to make it the new standard. Connecting with nature would be the new design rules and that would be really cool. We’re using the sea and we should give back to the sea.”

1. What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 mainly show?
A.Going surfing costs a lot of money.B.Surfing is popular with young people.
C.Designing surfboards is a good business.D.Making eco-friendly surfboards is necessary.
2. Why does Davies mention “fish’s ecosystem”?
A.To explain a rule.B.To present a reason.
C.To make a comparison.D.To share an experience.
3. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Why Davies loved to design surfboards.
B.What made Davies’ surfboard business possible.
C.Why Davies wanted to study mycelia at university.
D.How Davies collected substrate material to make surfboards.
4. What can we learn from Davies’ words in the last paragraph?
A.He supports environment-friendly products.B.He hopes to succeed in selling surfboards.
C.He loves to get designing ideas from sea.D.He dreams of creating cooler surfboards.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了罗马尼亚最鼓舞人心的传统之一“熊舞”的相关情况。

5 . Of the many colorful Romanian traditions that are brought to life every year, the Bear Dance is one of the most inspiring. This folk tradition dates back to thousands of years ago.

Traditionally, the arrival of the “bears” is announced by a small group of “irozi”, who blow whistles (口哨) to a rhythm set by the head bear tamer (训兽师). Chosen for his leadership skills, the head tamer is the one who decides when each of the acts is played and gives the cues.

The “bears” dance to the beat set by the pan flutes (排萧) and the drums, after practicing for up to three months before the day of the ceremony. Wearing the special costumes requires strength and must be handled with confidence, to look fierce, with the heaviest of costumes weighing up to 50 kilos.

When the person wearing the costume is standing up straight, the “bear” looks up. During the dance, the wearer must bend forward and shake his or her body to the left and to the right while taking small steps either to the front or to the side.

Taking place every winter in villages and cities in Romania’s eastern region of Moldova, the Bear Dance symbolizes the death and rebirth of time. The Bear Dance sees men of all ages, and increasingly more women, who are dressed in real bear skins and dance to the rhythm of pan flutes and drums to drive off evil spirits and ring in the new year. Performed between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, this ancient ritual brings together the whole community, who gather to watch the performance.

By tradition, the procession of the Bear Dance, which includes 6 to 24 “bears”, would visit every family of the village, accompanied by up to three singing bear tamers, several characters wearing women’s clothes and drummers. While this tradition is still observed in many villages, in cities and towns it usually takes the form of a parade that takes place at the end of a major performance in the center.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了如何与陌生人交流,并提供了一些建议。

8 . How to Talk to Strangers

We are often taught at a very young age not to talk to strangers. However, we grow up and have to talk to strangers all day long.     1

First of all, it is very important to have a warm approach if you want to avoid a cold communication. So when you are approaching a stranger for the first time next time, send off friendly signals (信号), such as smiling.

Now that you have approached with friendly and warm signals, what do you say to a stranger?     2     The opening lines are not as important as you might think. One of the best and effective opening lines is also the simplest, such as “Hey, how are you?”, which has worked for me all the time.

After or during your opening line, give out your hand for a nice solid handshake. But what if you don’t like shaking hands? Too bad, I advise you to step up and shake the other person’s hand anyway. Why? Because handshakes are so important.     3

4     You can tell the strangers who you are and how you have arrived. And if you can, try asking them questions. For example, I could say, “Hey, I’m Vanessa. This is my first time at this conference and how about you?” Then they would respond and we are in a conversation and no longer strangers.

My final tip for you is to use food and drink as an opener if you can. Sitting at the bar is an easy way to make conversation with the person next to you.     5     We all eat and drink, so it’s an easy way in.

A.Now it’s time to introduce yourself.
B.Give something as a gift to the stranger at the first time.
C.Having a small talk while waiting to be seated is very simple.
D.Opening lines tend to make people very nervous, but don’t worry.
E.When discussing a problem you both meet, you will better understand each other.
F.Here are some tips for you to develop a quick and good relationship with strangers.
G.The moment your skin touches someone else’s skin, both of you will feel more connected.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了美国为保持生态平衡,制定了一系列关于如何管理鹿群的规定及其效果。

9 . For hundreds of years, America’s wilderness has been reduced due to growing cities, leaving outdoors lovers like hunters with fewer chances. By around 1900, too much hunting drove America’s deer nearly into extinction (灭绝), less than a half-million deer, from 45 million in 1450.

Law-makers began to make rules to protect deer and keep ecological balance (生态平衡). And it did make a big difference. By 2000, the deer population had come up to 38 million. Those days, millions of deer lived side by side with humans and could freely find enough food resources.

Gradually, the number of deer was increasing too rapidly, which was not good for both the animals and people. City hunting plays an important role in keeping ecological balance, particularly in places where the animals sometimes cause major problems.

“City deer hunting is a management practice used in many cities and suburban areas across the United States,” says Jason Andrews, program manager of the Urban Deer Hunt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the early 2000s, a high number of car accidents were caused by deer. And there was also significant vegetation degradation (植被退化) in many cities. Many possible solutions were researched by the city government. Some suggested hunting deer and other wild animals, but others were against that practice.

In the end, researchers determined that the most effective and sustainable (可持续的) population management solution would be hunting with bows. “City deer hunting is popular in cities that have too many wild deer as well as wooded areas,” says Andrews. “In Cedar Rapids, all parts of the city have right habitats to keep deer population, thus hunting is allowed. I must note that hunting is only allowed on private lands. No parks or any other public grounds can be hunted.”

1. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A.The deer population was dropping rapidly.
B.Some cities grew smaller in the country.
C.The number of deer dropped to 1,450.
D.The deer population grew up by 45 million.
2. What can we infer about the rules for protecting deer?
A.They failed to be carried out in the US.
B.They were quite successful.
C.People had different attitudes towards them.
D.They were made by Jason Andrews.
3. Which tool is the best for deer hunting according to the text?
A.Stones.B.Guns.C.Branches.D.Bows.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Ways to Protect the Environment
B.The Number of Deer in the US
C.People’s Attitude to Deer Hunting
D.America’s Rules for Deer to Keep Ecological Balance
