文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四幅名画——从扬·凡·艾克的肖像画到巴勃罗·毕加索的杰作。它们都经受住了时间的考验。

2 . The following four famous paintings—from Jan van Eyck’s portrait to Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece—have stood the test of time.

The Arnolfini Portrait

The Arnolfini Portrait of Jan van Eyck, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through Jan van Eyck’s heavy use of symbolism—while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.

The Starry Night

During his 12—month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890, Vincent Willem van Gogh painted The Starry Night, an oil on canvas(帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of Van Gogh’s most famous works.

The Harvesters

The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicted the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.

Guernica

Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicted the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.

5 . Urban Wildlife

Cities are diverse ecosystems. In addition to visitors, a large number of species share our urban areas. As our cities spread, we need to think about what it is like for other species to have human neighbors.

Cities are built for humans.     1     For example, most city parks are kept neat and tidy so that humans will find them beautiful. But when we cut grass or plants, we destroy natural habitats, which leads to the imbalance of ecology.

2     When a bridge in Austin, Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats, and soon the bridge was home to thousands of bats.     3     Now, they have come to value their winged neighbors. The bats become an attraction, and they eat lots of bugs every night.

There are also structures built with the aim of bringing wildlife into the city. The Olympic Forest Park in Beijing is a good example. The park used native plants, and created open and natural spaces for wildlife. The result is a zone in Beijing with over 160 species of birds. In many ways, the park is the opposite of a zoo.     4

If we learn to share our space, we can become better neighbors of the wildlife around us.     5     Our own future will be endangered too.

A.They are built to protect birds.
B.Our actions sometimes help other species.
C.If we do not, more species will become extinct.
D.They do not always provide suitable habitats for wildlife.
E.Instead of being kept in cages, wildlife can move more freely.
F.At first, people were afraid of the bats and tried to get rid of them.
G.They would sit on it and their droppings would fall into the water.

9 . Ray is a physical education teacher at Central Algoma Secondary School. This year, most of their classes were remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One day, Ray was talking to his daughter Sadie, who was set to graduate. The school was planning to have teachers hand-deliver diplomas to each student's home, but Sadie asked her dad if she could receive hers on a nearby outdoor stage instead.

“I said, ‘Sure, I'll do that’. No problem. Is there anybody else who would like to receive their diploma on the stage?’”Ray said. “And she said, ‘Yeah, everybody would like to get their diploma on the stage.’”

Moved, the creative dad got to work to make it happen — not just for his daughter, but for all of the graduating seniors! He spent about six hours one weekend building a portable (便携的) stage that he could pull behind his truck. He then got permission from the school, and they eagerly agreed to help make his mobile graduation mission a success.

“It's such an important event for so many people.... It was almost like the first win that we've had in a year and a half after being beaten down,” Ray said. “We finally get to do this one thing that we'll remember for the rest of our lives.”

Over the course of two days in late June, Ray traveled over 250 miles to give 72 graduates their big moment!

Joel Lamoureux was one student who received his diploma on the portable stage. His mom, Krissie Lamoureux said the experience felt relaxed and easy while still providing an important photo opportunity for this milestone in their lives.

“It was extremely personal,” she added. “It's really hard as a parent to watch your child graduate from a distance and not be able to really be a part of anything.”

Li wants to share the quiet country life, so she makes her new home a homestay.
