文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章就出国学习或工作时如何与来自不同文化的室友交往提出了几点建议。

1 . While you are studying or working abroad, sharing an apartment with people from other cultures is a great way of getting the most out of a period of the beginning. This is a situation to which it will take some time to adapt. Here are some tips to make the process go smoother.

Start by being aware of your own culture, values and attitudes. Understand that people who have not grown up in the same country or context as you can sometimes translate some of your behavior in the wrong way. To avoid this, seek advice from your friends and family to find out more about what type of person you are and what you might come across when it comes to people who don’t know you. You might also consider conducting a little research about what type of stereotypes (成见) other cultures might hold about the people of your own country.

Be understanding and patient. Now that you know that people are all different, be understanding when you get to know them. Try to be open-minded so that you can start off on the right foot. This will promote communication with them. To get to know each other better, plan to spend some time doing what each of you likes to do in your spare time. You can cook meals together, go out to the town, listen to music, take a weekend trip and plan some board games. Moreover, the other person might be from a place where People do not usually do these activities. The opportunities to learn from each other are endless, but sometimes it can take some initiative (主动权) to actually make it happen.

People are more similar than you think most of the time. We grow up in such a large world with so much information everywhere and sometimes we can be misled into thinking something that we should not believe, but we have the opportunity to make up our own minds. So be kind. You don’t know where people come from and what their story is.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要说明了中国科学家发现的下颚化石有助于帮助我们更好的理解人类从鱼类进化而来的历史。

6 . Humans evolved from apes. This is what we learned in biology class. But what came before apes? Chinese scientists have discovered fossils that could enrich the evolutionary story of how humans evolved from fish.

According to four articles published in the journal Nature in late September, Chinese researchers found fish fossils that provide the “missing link” about the origin of the jaw, a key feature that 99.8 percent of vertebrate (脊椎动物) species have.

Zhu Min, a lead researcher of the studies from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the findings drew a large amount of interest in the science world due to the importance of jaws in animal evolution.

However, the rise of the jaw had been a mystery due to a lack of sufficient fossil evidence to support that jawed vertebrates lived 450 million years ago.

The latest findings made by Zhu’s team presented a set of five surprisingly well-preserved fish fossils that included three whole-bodied fish, helping scientists paint a more accurate evolutionary picture of the origin of the jaw. The fish fossils were discovered at two sites in Chongqing and Guizhou, whose strata (岩层) date back to the Silurian Period that began around 440 million years ago.

These fossils show that jawed fish were already thriving (繁荣) in the world’s ancient oceans at that time. Later on, more diverse and larger jawed fish evolved and began to spread around the world, paving the way for some fish to eventually go on land and evolve into other animals — including humans.

“These fossils provide an unprecedented (前所未有的) opportunity to peek into the ‘dawn of fish’ and help scientists trace many human body structures back to these ancient fish thus filling some key gaps in the evolutionary history of how fish evolved into humans,” Zhu said.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了法国人的饮食习惯。

8 . Most French people eat dinner at 8 pm later. Some French families, especially if they do not have young children, may start dinner as late as 9 pm or 9:30 pm. The first time I went to France, I was puzzle that my host family hadn’t had dinner by 7 pm yet. “Are they going to skip dinner?” I wondered.

It’s not clear to me why French people eat so late. Alysa Salzberg, a French writer, guesses that the later meal time develops from typical French working hours. “French people eat late because most standard job hours are 9 or 10 to 6, instead of 9 to 5,” Alysa explains. “So, by the time everyone gets home and a meal is prepared, it’s about 8 pm.”

French people usually eat a smaller dinner, such as soup or salad with bread and dessert. Considering French people famously don’t snack, they must survive a long break between lunch and dinner. The solution is that lunch is the biggest meal of the day. Americans and people from other countries may have a simple sandwich for lunch, but French lunches are much more considerable. I remember having a huge lunch at the host school with other French students last month. The lunch came with salad, bread, a main dish, cheese and yogurt. It seemed like too much food the first time I saw it.

In addition, French people never eat on the way. It’s unusual to see French people eating a cheeseburger from a McDonald’s while sitting in their cars. I don’t remember seeing French people eating while walking in the street or on the subway in Paris either. French people consider it important to sit down at a table to eat and even eat a hamburger with a knife and fork.

1. Why do the French eat dinner late according to Alysa Salzberg?
A.They get off work late.B.They are as busy as a bee.
C.Cooking dinner takes lots of time.D.Dinner is less important than lunch.
2. What does the underlined word “considerable” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Delicious.B.Simple.C.Plentiful.D.Expensive.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fast food is not popular in France.
B.Cars play an important role in French life.
C.Eating in public places is not allowed in France.
D.The French pay great attention to eating manners.
4. What can we infer about the author?
A.He works as a magazine writer.B.He enjoys French food very much.
C.He is an overseas student in France.D.He agrees with the French way of life.

9 . With its snow-covered mountains and a variety of wildlife, Yellow Stone National Park is one of the scenic treasures of the United States. Located primarily in Wyoming, the park hosts millions of visitors every year. If you plan to travel within the park, keep in mind advice from the National Park Service.

Seasonal Travel

Travel varies vastly from season to season. Roads are generally open in the summer except for cases of rock or mud slides, wild fires, accidents or road construction. Early snows in the fall can cause some roads to close temporarily. In the winter almost all roads are closed to motor vehicles, but snowmobiles and other snow vehicles with tracks are allowed. Roads begin to open for the spring by the latter part of April but can close if snowfall continues.

Driving Time

Grand Loop is the main road through Yellowstone National Park; it passes by most of the major attractions. These include Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The maximum speed limit on the Grand Loop is 45 miles per hour, but the speed limit drops during some of the winding and twisting sections of this narrow road. Allow yourself at least two days to fully travel the loop due to the size of the park and being sometimes stuck in heavy traffic.

Safety Awareness

Buffalo(水牛)often block the roads in the park as they move through the fields. If a group is traveling across the road you are on, you can either wait for them to pass or find an alternative route. If you get out of your vehicle, the National Park Service says to stay at least 25 yards from any buffalo (and 100 yards or more away from bears and wolves). Buffalo are particularly unpredictable and charge people at speeds up to 30 mph.

You can take your bicycle on any public roads and routes designed for bikes, but bicycles are not allowed on the park roads which are narrow with few shoulders. Altitudes range from 5, 300 to 8, 860 feet. The National Park Service recommends cyclists wear helmets and noticeable clothing.

1. What do we know about travelling in the Yellowstone Park?
A.Roads will stay open in case of emergency.
B.Traffic jam happens from time to time.
C.The driving speed on the road can be 50 mph.
D.Motor vehicles are allowed in the winter.
2. What does the National Park Service suggest people do about safety?
A.Stay inside the car throughout the travel.
B.Get out of their vehicles when coming across the Buffalo.
C.Wear the easy-to-see clothes while bicycling.
D.Avoid bicycling on the public roads.
3. From which is the text probably taken?
A.A guidebook.
B.A commercial advertisement.
C.A research paper.
D.A geography textbook.
