3 . Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.

Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers (汉堡包) are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham (火腿)? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.

Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.

4 . Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota offers several short classes on Chinese language and culture.

The Confucius Institute follows the University of Minnesota semester schedule. The Confucius Institute classes start a few weeks after the start of the University semester and last for ten class sessions. Classes are not held on University holidays.

All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This may be your lucky day.”

For several weeks Mrs. Emerson hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hope. Her kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to dissuade(劝阻) her but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say, “Madam, this is your lucky day. Everything in your basket is free.”

Keeping a diary     1     English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing abilities. Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes     2     (little) time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If we persist (坚持) in this practice,     3     (gradual) we’ll learn how to express     4     (we) in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many difficulties. 9 . To master a language one must be able to speak and understand the spoken language as well as to read and write.

Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same. If you don’t listen carefully, you will find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.

Writing, like speaking, it’s to express ideas. People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea clear in your head and then to write it in clear lively language.

Chinese students read too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary. Guess the meaning from the context (上下文). If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.

Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they’re studying. They should learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.
