文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些在日常生活中找到更多平静与安宁的方法。

1 . The daily life can be busy and at times difficult. It may sometimes feel like bringing just a little more inner peace and calmness into your life is a hopeless wish.    1     Small and smart changes can make a big difference over time. Here are some tips for finding more peace and calmness in everyday life.

Set limits. If your life is overfilled, you may need to set some limits. So stop doing some of the least important things, which honestly don’t matter that much. Set a limit for how many times you will check your mailbox per day.     2

Organise your world and your mind.     3     A tidy, clean and ordered space around you brings clarity (清晰) and order to the mind. So don’t stop there. Simplify and organise your home and life to live in a more relaxing environment.

4     Reading minds is pretty much impossible. But still we often try it and create anxiety and uncertainty for ourselves. So ask and communicate instead. It may sometimes be a bit hard at first but it can save you and the people around you so much trouble in the long run.

Solve a problem that is weighing heavily on you. Settle your problem and release all the stress that it is creating in your life. You probably already know what to do, and you are just not doing it yet,     5     So get up from your chair and get started right now.

A.Ask instead of guessing.
B.Practise reading minds more.
C.Sometimes you have a bad day.
D.But it doesn't have to be that way.
E.And say no if you really don't have the time.
F.Just take three minutes to clean up the room you are in.
G.but the longer you wait, the worse the tension inside becomes.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。这篇文章主要是介绍和倡导生态智能。

6 . When it comes to going green, intention can be easier than action. Case in point: you decide to buy a T-shirt made from 100% organic cotton. But that green label doesn’t tell the whole story—like the fact that even organic cotton requires more than 10,000 L of water to grow enough fibre for one T-shirt. Or the possibility that the T-shirt may have been dyed (染色) using harmful industrial chemicals. If you knew all that, would you still consider the T-shirt green? Would you still buy it?

It’s a hard question to answer. That’s because the global economy development is beyond our ability to comprehend the consequences—for ourselves and the planet. We are not prepared to understand the increasing impact of industrial chemicals on our children’s health or the climate. And we lack the data to understand the full impact of what we choose.

But what if we could calculate the full lifetime effect of our actions on the earth and on our bodies? Not just carbon footprints but social and biological footprints as well? What if we could think ecologically? That’s what psychologist Daniel Goleman describes in his forthcoming book, Ecological Intelligence. He compiles (汇编) the environmental and biological impact of our every decision and delivers that information to consumers in a user-friendly way. That’s thinking ecologically—understanding the global environmental consequences of our local choices.

Ecological intelligence is ultimately about more than what we buy. It’s also about our ability to accept that we live in a closely connected world with limited resources. Goleman highlights the Tibetan community of Sher, where for thousands of years, villagers have survived severe conditions by carefully protecting every resource available to them. The Tibetans think ecologically because they have no other choice. Neither do we. “We once had the luxury to ignore our impacts,” says Goleman. “Not any more.”

1. Why is it hard for us to decide whether a T-shirt is green or not?
A.The green label tells lies.B.We lack enough knowledge.
C.The economy grows too slowly.D.We are misled by false data.
2. What does Ecological Intelligence encourage readers to do?
A.Increase carbon footprints.B.Give up regular consumption.
C.Develop ecological thinking.D.Deliver information to customers.
3. How do the Tibetans of Sher live?
A.By searching for new resources.B.By living on plentiful resources.
C.By distributing resources reasonably.D.By treasuring their resources seriously.
4. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To instruct manufacturers how to go green.
B.To introduce and advocate ecological intelligence.
C.To warn people of the dangers of ecological crisis.
D.To illustrate the origin of ecological intelligence.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Aarrav发明智能勺子的原因和过程。

7 . Aarav Anil, the 17-year-old student With a passion for robotics from Bengraluro, invented a smart spoon that can help people with Parkinson’s disease eat with dignity.

Aarrav’s interest in creating a smart spoon came from seeing his uncle Arjun who has Parkinson’s disease struggling to feed himself. This disease affects the brain and leads to involuntary shaking. Hence, food kept spilling out of his mouth and onto his clothing.Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself with dignity.

Aarrav took to his room with microcontrollers, motors, sensors and a 3-D printer. Not everything went smoothly.“It was frustrating not being able to find the tiny electronics parts I needed here in India. I had to order some from China.but they took ages to arrive.”Aarrav said.Through tireless efforts. Aarrav made a first model but the handle was too slippery for his uncle to use so he had to change it.Then the prototype (维形) went to be tested at the RV College of Physiotherapy in Bengaluru.

“I’ve been fine tuning the design based on the college’s feedback — that it needs to be waterproof so that it can be washed without damaging all the electronics inside; and that it must be detachable (可拆卸的) so it can be cleaned and replaced by a fork.” Aarrav said. The trials being conducted at the college are expected to be completed by early 2024 and the results will be published in a medical journal.

Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will begin to be manufactured on a small scale when the testing is complete. While other smart spoons already exist and two US companies are already producing their own versions, the cost is too high for most Indians. Aarrav’s version is estimated to cost around 580). His hope is that everyone with Parkinson’s disease will have access to a smart spoon.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文,论述新的研究建议父母对婴儿使用有节奏的语言,比如童谣,因为婴儿是从节奏而不是语音学习语言的。

8 . Phonetic (语音) information—the smallest sound elements of speech - is considered by researchers to be the basis of language. Babies are thought to learn these small sound elements and add them together to make words. But a new study suggests that phonetic information is learnt too late and slowly for this to be the case. Instead, rhythmic (有韵律的) speech helps babies learn language and is effective even in the first few months of life.

Researchers from the Trinity College Dublin investigated babies’ ability to process phonetic information during their first year. Their study, published in the journal Nature Communications. found that phonetic information wasn’t successfully encoded (编码) until seven months old, and did not occur very often at 11 months old when babies began to say their first words. From then individual speech sounds are still added in very slowly—too slowly to form the basis of language.

The researchers recorded patterns of brain activity in 50 babies at four, seven, and eleven months old as they watched a video of a primary school teacher singing 18 nursery rhymes (童谣) to a baby. They found that phonetic encoding in babies appeared inchmeal over the first year of life, beginning with labial sounds (e.g. “d” for “daddy”) and nasal sounds (e.g. “m” for “mummy”), with the “read out” progressively looking more like that of adults.

“The reason why we use nursery rhymes is because that is the best way for babies to discover and connect sounds with language, so we are teaching them how to speak,” said Giovanni Di Liberto, lead author of the study at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. “Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible or use baby-directed speech because it will make a difference to language outcome,” she added.

1. What should babies learn in the first few months of life according to the new study?
A.Small sound elementsB.Rhythmic information.
C.Phonetic information.D.Individual words.
2. What does the author mainly discuss in paragraph 2?
A.The poor phonetic encoding in babies.B.The advantages of phonetic information.
C.The babies’ great ability to learn language.D.The babies’ growing process in the first year.
3. What does the underlined word “inchmeal” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Gradually.B.Suddenly.C.Successfully.D.Occasionally.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.When Babies Are Able to Say Their First Words
B.How Phonetic Information Changes Over Time
C.Why Phonetic Is Better Than Rhythmic for Babies
D.Why Babies Need Nursery Rhymes for Language Mastery

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了共同阅读的好处。

10 . It’s summer. You’re on your favorite beach towel, a friend beside you. You’re both absorbed in books, occasionally taking some water. But what happens when it’s time to head home? Will you carry on reading together later? Generally speaking, reading tends to be seen as an individual pastime.    1     However, the benefits of sharing the experience are numerous and worth sticking with throughout the year

2    For example, you don’t have to brainstorm to organize a conversation, because you both have a book in your hands. You can get lost in your book without worrying about seeming rude by not keeping up a constant stream of chatter. As you both enter the same state, your blood pressure will go down, muscle tension will ease, and your worries will fade away. All these put you at ease.    3    A quiet comer of the playground, a blanket spread out on the grass in the garden, or any calm space where you feel relaxed will do.

Spending time together reading can strengthen friendships. As you tum the pages, you might discover interesting stories to share with each other. Sometimes, you’ll come across more serious themes, such as losing a love done or a cherished pet, or facing anyone of life’s many challenges.    4

Reading fiction has been shown to enhance empathy (共情), which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. As you know, novels allow us to live countless experiences through their characters.    5

A.They will result in heightened sensitivity.
B.Reading with others is comforting in many ways.
C.Reading can surely bring the joy of relaxation to people.
D.Besides, you don’t need to find a specific place to get into this zone.
E.So it might seem unusual to pullout a novel in the company of others.
F.Reading in pair may help you and your friend stay more committed to reading.
G.Discussing these themes can help deepen the bond between you and your friend.
